Oh, I was wondering if this would ever get resolved. Is it going to be applied retroactively? If so, I'm assuming this change hasn't happened yet because I just had some runs approved today in which my claimed time (which was based on the in-game timer) was overridden with a slightly shorter time, presumably based on frame count.
Since it might be relevant, I've noticed that LZDoom and legacy versions of ZDoom have some inconsistencies in the way the in-game timer works. I can achieve 0.812 seconds in Jump% in those versions whereas 0.828 is the best I can do in the current version of GZDoom. Strange, because 0.812 * 35 is nowhere near close to an integer value.
A quick search seems to reveal that this is because older versions make the assumption that 1 frametic = exactly 0.028 seconds (https://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=46487). In reality, 1/35 is much closer to 0.02857. Even this miniscule difference can snowball into a 10 second inaccuracy after about 7-8 minutes of gameplay.
It would certainly explain the inconsistency I was seeing. 0.812s in LZDoom and 0.828s in modern GZDoom both translate to 29 frames of gameplay in their respective methods for measuring time.
I wonder if that means we would have to start enforcing the use of specific GZDoom versions (for the wad, not the pk3. The pk3 is explicitly scripted not to run on anything older than GZDoom 4.8.0).
I've been thinking about two possible categories:
New Game+: Grab as much weaponry, ammo, and health as you can in one playthrough of My House + Underhalls, then go to the exit. The clock starts as soon as you return to My House and play through the map a second time. I'd be curious to see what the introduction of the Super Shotgun and Plasma Rifle would have on certain fights (or the BFG with tons of ammo for that matter).
Get to the Backrooms: Right now, the only "legal" way I know of to get to the Backrooms without cheating is to play all the way through until you get the Rocket Launcher in Mirror Gas Station and use it to jump across the gap in the Brutalist House garage and into the teleporter. If new discoveries are made on how to get there sooner, it might make for an interesting speedrun evolution with dramatic reductions in times.
