I'm glad that someone was able to take down the real 35 year record that's been tied numerous times since, 5.61 is an understandably fast time considering that the analysis required to understand how faster was would not have been possible without deconstructing the game. Speedrunning has come a long way, and this run proved it. I want your book in hard back when it comes out my dude
See the last paragraph in Development here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phantasy_Star_Collection#Development
Essentially, this is the third collection of Phantasy Star released for the PS2 as an NTSC-J exclusive game (and Japanese exclusive PSN on PS3), however unlike the previous collections, this game has all 4 of the Phantasy Star games in both English and Japanese, despite being region locked to NTSC-J
The reason this is being brought up is because I would like the use this version and compete fairly amongst the other releases of Phantasy Star games as it was both the cheapest and best option for video quality. So I thought I'd detail a little bit of the options.
This game has a lot of different resolutions the game can be set at, which consists of 240p, 480i, and 480p options. This seems to be purely to make the game look best with however the TV you are using. In addition, it has a "smoothing" option which is pretty much an option I've always seen people say to leave alone (and makes the game not look at all the way us Nostalgia folks like).
The game has a Sprite Limit option defaulted to OFF. Self-explanatory but it's there.
There's also a CPU overclock setting, defaulted to Normal, once again self-explanatory.
The 2 biggest things this version has that no other Collection has for its English counterparts are the game speed and the difficulty.
There are 3 difficulties, Normal, Easy, and Very Easy. Normal is played like the game was intended, whereas Easy and Very Easy increased mesata and Experience gained from battles.
There is also a global speed option, Normal and Boost-2, self-explanatory. To clarify, this makes EVERYTHING in the game speed up (battle animations, overworld walking, menu loading, etc.). Finally, the game has a dedicated button assigned to "Accelerate," which further boosts your overworld movement speed.
So that's the general run down of things, that being said a lot of these things can be set to make this version an equal version compared to all other releases.
I guess my input is simple: If I or anyone else wants to run on this version, we must show the pause menu before every attempt that shows the following:
[Phantasy Star 1 System Menu -> Options (Master System)]
Move Speed: Normal Difficulty: Normal Save Dialog: Manual (skips a dialog communication w/ PS2)
[Phantasy Star 1 System Menu -> Options (Master System) -> Extended Options]
Sprite Limit: On Cpu Clock: Normal
[Phantasy Star 1 System Menu -> Options (Master System) -> Controller 1P]
Button1(Auto Repeat): No Assign Button2(Auto Repeat): No Assign Accelerate: No Assign
Finally, in terms of equalness, this version does however lose a small amount of time because in order to reset the game, you have to go into the menu and scroll down to the RESET option. So in conclusion these options would make this game as close to being equal as possible.
I guess the last words I should part with here is that the PS2 collection is technically the fastest if you went all the way and overclocked it, had Boost-2 on and accelerate assigned at all times and difficulty to Very Easy, but at that point it would only be worth doing if there were multiple people interested and having this be separate from the standard way the game should be played.
Thanks for reading from what I've explored in this version of the game and I hope I have a chance to try and compete in this series!
I'd like to just say keep things on track with the discussion, personal attacks aren't something that should be brought up when it comes to handling stuff on a community leaderboard. Not going to name names, but just act civil please.
I also would like to reiterate what was discussed about how we first handled this. Me and Narbe practically begged people to get into the discussion and have a conversation, place their input, and whatnot in a public forum. It was near unanimous what should be expected after discussion, however the moment the category went down to sub 40 minutes after already agreed on how to handle it, things for some reason changed.
I take responsibility for things being the way they currently are, i thought several days was enough for the community to talk things over, but ironically enough, the first time I try to hasten a decision with community support, things happen to backfire (remember how long it took for 100% to get discussed?).
All I will say is I truly want people to voice their opinions on how they think this should be handled, there are several runners and community members (even if they don't run the game) that have yet to provide input. I know it's probably gonna suck but I want this settled by the end of the week (me personally, not an actual deadline). After this discussion we can all go back to being closer together because something as minor as this shouldn't fracture us. Just remember that this is a community leaderboard, we may disagree but at the end of the day we all share it.
I agree with the mindset that if you don't want your time tracked, don't have the information public. No one really cares if the video is privated in a way that only 2 people in the world will ever see, but once the video is public knowledge then it must stay public. Why would you ever run a game and upload a video if you don't want someone from a leaderboard website to link to your run?
I"m kinda in the in between boat for this.
For one, I really disagree with the usage of ESW. I don't really like using another files direct progress to make another file faster, it seems "unethical" to me. Though I've never done any speedrun that had file transfers occur (like zeldas)
By direct, I mean going into it and doing stuff. Some games have "passive" progress that allows for completion of a category (like Star Fox 64 100% for instance, being done on expert mode). It wouldn't be worth it to force a cartridge reset just to have runners get back to "100% ready file RTA," so allowing passive progress is something many can agree is a good thing.
On the other hand, the length is a strong suit for it, sub 35 minutes is an excellent length for a first speedrun.
That being said, if I had to change things, renaming it to something else and moving it to Misc. would be a first step. The category has a lot of interest, so it'd be pointless to throw it away. Ultimately I'm not really gonna try and push for one thing over the other, just stating my opinion so I can make sure things get settled correctly.
So just from talking with everyone and clarifying stuff, I think I've come to the following conclusions on how people believe this should be handled:
- Any% will remain the same on the leaderboard, however we will have to add a new rule that restricts play off of other files.
- Any% ESW sounds like the name for the new category as it will explicitly ban Reverse ESW (otherwise what's the point of the run)
- Krystal Corruption will be a misc category as it uses Reverse ESW
There's been a lot of miscommunication on how things should be handled (most of it is just the wording for the new category and how it will affect the wording of current any%......my mistake), the general agreement is people want to run this, so logically it should have a place here.
If I missed anything let me know otherwise we'll start to make changes to the board soon to accommodate this find.
The problem here is the act of going into another file during the run. If the setup file was not gone into, I highly doubt anyone would have issues here, but going into another file to trick the game for the run file, I mean the stuff you are doing isn't done in the run file and it's affecting the run.
Also I do agree, the point of any% is to beat the game as fast as possible, but what's the point if you skip stuff outside the scope of the original run file?
@Keanu the point of the thread wasn't to have you claim no one else mattered in the discussion, it was to put the discussion in an open forum with all the information available instead of it being a closed discussion cliche. Just because people. haven't ran the game in a long time doesn't mean their points aren't relevant, that's not how a community leaderboard discussion works. Most of the time new finds bring new people together and older runners back into the game. Be mindful of that.
As for my input on it, I don't mind Krystal corruption being a Misc. category, that's kinda what misc categories are for. Most seem to agree on making 2 categories out of this, one that is Any% and the other which is the current any%, which did not use ESW.
I also agree on this needing to not take 3 years like defining 100%. Most of the groundwork seems to be in place, just need to wait for others opinions, but the current direction seems to be near unanimous agreement.
I'm talking about the unofficial means that use real consoles (not aftermarket ones like retrons). For instances 3rd party gba player for snes, Genesis on Snes (which further allows for sega master drive on snes), NES on SNES, etc.
Yoshi's Island, Yoshi's Woolly World, Star Fox Adventures, just nice relaxing video games that are superb when you just want to focus casually instead of the never ending grind
Been trying to get into other games and mostly want to avoid the hassle of hooking up a million consoles. I've already purchased a Super Retro Advance, which lets me play GBA games on my SNES. Works really fine, albeit a terrrible 3:2 composite only video display.
Also noticed they made one for a genesis-on-snes adapter as well (which further lets you play SMS games on it).
Has anyone else looked into these kind of conversions and whether they'd be considered acceptable for speedruns? From my testing of the GBA-on-SNES, all the games seemed fine to me.
I've set a 5:01 using Jolteon so I guess to put my perspective here. Please note that my route was very bad, didn't get double-edge, and didn't make use of EXP. Share optimally.

You have to do an extra battle to get the TM for Thunderbolt as you can't learn it by leveling up. It's a small detour but that alone will cost a few minutes unless you wanna YOLO the rest of the cipher key lair and citadark with a 70% accurate move.
-
It has slower animations, Bite is like a second slower being used by Jolteon compared to be using by Espeon.
-
Hidden Power would make this a very interesting choice to come back to since HP Thunder 70 prior to snattle would help a lot.
Aside from these couple points, I have no idea if Jolteon could ever overtake an Espeon run, the extra speed doesn't help it as much, and there's so many fights where enemies have ground types or the Lightning rod ability.
I'd say in a perfect run with perfect rng it's so hard to determine who's better but unless someone returns to do runs with Jolteon that threatens the top times, Espeon will be the new norm. Don't let that deter you from trying, however, as this game still has a long way to go before we're at that point!
Pretty much yeah, any method we try will have some kind of inaccuracy but this sounds like the best option that doesn't involve watched for "The End"
lol I feel so dumb but at least every run on the board uses the same timing method
OK so pretty much every run on the leaderboard is timed by the flashing animation signaling Homncruse's defeat (which I assumed was the case before asking). We good on having this as the ending time point?
