sounds like the right idea from joshimuz. lately, people have moved to self-hosting as an alternative to things like google photos. i know from doing this myself that linux servers are simple to run on old laptops and typically have a fairly negligible electricity cost, running at 3W or smth similar. i think software could be made to host videos on these and allow people to connect to them and stream them, even. maybe this can be used together with torrents

the main thing is hosting strategies, so, being able to use youtube or cloud storage for most common traffic, say for the most important #n runs, and being able to easily move data from place to place. i have a hi-fi retiming method that has a computer generate a manifest from a video that, even without the original source, can be used to know the run happened to an exact length with a high degree of confidence (check out the retimes tab at the leaderboard at https://tiny.cc/smsrta)

internet archive is an ok backup option as well

it’s not that hard. you can’t rely on big tech storing your videos, because their incentive is profit. you need to start thinking about self-hosting and decentralisation systems, as well as how to ensure longevity as communities churn thru people thru the years

What I will mainly remember is to do my own researches to see the actual world records, which is quite tedious when we normally have a site doing the job.

@Waxy i think it models the real world in many ways. we have accurate information while people get on, and after that everything turns into a propaganda war where it’s up to you to try to figure out what’s actually going on

disturbed and dysfunctional comes out of the amount of abnormal persistent dynamics, like the censure of names in discussions, the zoomer bullying overtly lasting several years, the amount of hate crusades against “bad people”, dogpiling, psychological abuse, mutual defamation dynamics, the clout war over what is and isn’t world record, the official abuser libel made without seeing any evidence, the huge turnover of mods, the buried abuse case and tribute to the offender

i don’t see the relevance of there being good people; my point was the community itself is clearly messed up, considering all this stuff festers for years. and it’d be wise to realise this is holding back constructive progress and gives the community its bad reputation, rather than being in denial

there isn’t one group of runners who don’t submit times; there are dozens of separate corrections made to the other boards as well as several people who submit directly to the il board

the anonymous names are printed like so on the speedrun.com leaderboard, but are all converted to identifiable names on the accurate leaderboard, so i hope that explains your point about zelpikukirby

yeah i agree that these things should be in resources, but the community is run on a kind of “official”-ness system, where the moderators exert direct control of some leaderboards and don’t acknowledge the existence of things outside that. i remember they gave a speech looking back at 2023 where they ignored somebody getting 20 individual level world records, because they weren’t on their leaderboards

the bias from the top runners comes from them hating each other as you noticed. idk wym about polls that people aren’t aware of tho

the community is in general a very disturbed, dysfunctional and unproductive place, with resources for example stagnating owing to years of uncontrolled hate and conflicts and seemingly no ability to resolve them

if you wanna learn a 100% consistent beginner setup then my tutorial covers it slowly and surely but be warned there is a lot of information you need to know, so you may prefer an inconsistent but less-specifc setup, in which case watch all the tutorials on the wiki and then ask in the Discord #help channel to collect up all the details they omit

you can do what you want if you started the game on your console or emulator without any kinds of cheats or hacks; rocket storage is used in the fastest routes for all full-game categories

nintendont cuts down lag and load times cos of the way it uses wii hardware; emulator is fairly accurate to gamecube lag/loads (slower in fact) so doesn't provide an advantage
