As long as all runs are using the same timing system, it shouldn't matter; time is relative. In fact, an in-game timer is usually preferable because it tends to count at the same speed relative to the FPS of the game, so although the game time may not correlate precisely with real time, in-game timers will generally be accurate relative to those of other runs of the same game, and that's what matters.

What console are you using? Some games have native counters, and Steam has an FPS counter now: http://ccm.net/faq/40667-steam-display-the-in-game-fps-counter

Hey, are you that sword guy from Super Smash Bros? My sister is a huge fan of your work! Sorry, you probably get that joke all the time.

[EDIT: I'm not actually sorry at all. Welcome to the site!]

Your arguments aren't wrong, but this still bothers me for some reason. We seem to have different ideas of what a moderator is responsible for, for sure, but I think there's more to it than that. I think you're right that standardization of runs is against the general spirit of the community. However, promoting laziness isn't, and I think that's the distinction. My first impression, whether or not it is actually true, is that the standardization Oxknifer is trying to promote is not necessarily video quality, but the work ethic / respect standard runners have toward the mods of their games.

For example, I would be less likely to side with a runner if the issue was brought up ¤after¤ a run submission rather than ¤before¤ the submission. Is this runner complaining because he submitted a run before taking the time to read the rules? Or did he read the rules and have a legitimate reason for not being able to follow them? I think the distinction between these two situations may be why we are disagreeing.

I stand by the statement that "moderators have a reason for each rule they set", whether it is the true reset required in Undertale or requiring the game never be powered-off to restart like in Earthbound. That doesn't mean that the reason is always a ¤good¤ one, but the correct way to challenge that is not to submit a run, then complain when it is rejected, but to bring up the issue and reasoning to a higher authority in the proper forum.

If Little Timmy didn't read the rules for submission before doing the run, it's on him. It's the responsibility of a runner to understand the rules, not the moderator.

The "wearing purple sunglasses" bit is a Straw Man argument and a logical fallacy. It doesn't address the purpose for requiring a certain quality of video. Rejecting a run for low quality video is no different than rejecting a video for no sound (which is becoming more and more standard for games that ¤have¤ sound) It makes runs harder to verify and it shows that the runner doesn't care enough or simply does not want to put the effort into get the proper equipment (most of which is OPEN SOURCE and FREE). I get that console capture cards can be a couple hundred, but we're talking about PC games here. I think I made a similar argument elsewhere, but requiring Olympic swimmers to wear swimsuits is really not too much to ask, and neither is asking runners to invest in the proper equipment. Maybe Little Timmy has a gift, but he should still be held to the same standards as everyone else. The difference is between "discrimination" and "entitlement".

If you're not sure, check with the mods. When I first booted up OBS, I couldn't for the life of me get the sound to work, so I asked the mods of games I wanted to run if it was acceptable and if it was not, what I could do to ¤make¤ it acceptable if I couldn't get sound to work. In general, moderators don't set rules arbitrarily; there is usually a good reason for them, and it seem a bit disrespectful to the mods to insist that they excuse the rules just for Little Timmy.

I had this problem a while ago. To fix it you have to visit old man Bentley on the other side of the lake, but you must take the ferry after midnight. Google directions are as follows:

The best way to get better at it is to screw it up. There are some things you might not realize until you actually do it. Recently, I was five hours into an HM64 run when I realized that the lumber bin had a cap and all the lumber I was chopping was disappearing into thin air. Good times.

(EDIT: I'm going to bookmark this game and come back to it. I'm tempted to take this thread as a personal challenge)

Have you requested Slyceth to make you moderator? There's no reason that you can't both be moderators.

Regarding the laziness of Slyceth's runs, I'd like to point out that most communities are based on players copying and pasting the best routes. Additionally, if someone was going through my games and posting a new route, I would take that as a challenge rather than an insult. My mindset wouldn't be to piggyback off your ideas, but that maybe I'm not creative enough or have a lot of time in real life to come up with new strategies on my own, but dang it, I can play this game better than that person!

Imitation is the best form of flattery. I'm not sure why you're taking offense that someone thinks your runs are good enough to be considered the best route; that's pretty much how this site works. You can't "copyright" routes, and even if you came up with the best route, there's no stopping someone else from coming in through behind you and making it even better, especially if your original posts are "rough runs".

There really isn't a community-wide established way of confirming runs. Each game has their own eccentricities, but if there is a specific section that looks dubious (the mouse moves more quickly or accurately, the load time seems faster than other sections, etc.), you can always ask a person to live stream that specific section for you in real time. If they can't reproduce it or if the timing of the reproduction looks exactly the same as the video they submitted, then ask them to make a maneuver during the live test that they couldn't do if it was pre-recorded. Because it's just a clip and not actually being timed, there is no reason a person shouldn't be able to, say, make the character walk in a random circle during live play to ensure that what you're seeing isn't pre-recorded or using a bot with pre-set instructions.

I'd be up for the challenge. I haven't done any RPG style games yet either, but these things are always more fun when you're not the only one involved. When you create it, will you add the link to the discord to this thread?

The fastest way to learn how to do something is to do it. If you screw it up, you learn what not to do. If you screw it up beyond recovery, cut your losses and start over. Don't let the time and energy lost bother you, because you get to keep the lessons learned, and that's far more valuable.

(Edit: I think I accidentally stumbled upon an actual life lesson.)

What is the name of the game? What are the rules? Why do you disagree with them? How do you suggest they be changed?

I noticed a similar issue when I started practicing Harvest Moon 64 runs- some categories ask that timing start when you gain control of your character, and some ask that timing start on the screen where you name your character. In general, though, if all the runs in a certain category are all timed using the same ruleset, the results will be ¤relatively¤ the same.

I don't know the details or what game you are referring to, but other games that have had this issue in the past resolved it by creating different categories for different systems of timing. For instance, runs for Half-Life and the PC version of FFX, among others, have an option of runs "with loads" and "without loads": https://www.speedrun.com/hl1 https://www.speedrun.com/ffx#PC

When I encounter a crush of mine, I usually punch a hole in it and devour its insides. After that, sometimes I'll stomp the empty shell just for funsies, dispose of it, then never think about it again. Until I want to buy another soda...

But yeah, annoying how that happens, but that's how it goes. Sometimes you have to learn the hard way that we can't count on other people to respect our feelings, regardless of how hard we try to respect theirs. Being a good person doesn't mean that people will be good to you in turn. We can't make other people do anything; the best we can do is choose to walk away. Good for you.
