The boards are now open again and you can now submit your runs with the new LRT.
Remember you cannot use the previous LRT for submissions anymore, so if you haven't already, set up the new LRT through right clicking on your splits → Edit Splits → Search "Resident Evil 4 (Steam)" → Press "Activate" → Configure the settings however you like.
Greetings everybody! As we hinted at in the previous News post from last year, today we are officially releasing our brand new version of the Load Remover Timer (LRT) we use in LiveSplit, which has been developed by Yuushi with help from Sawken. This has been in the works since 2022 so it's a big relief for us to have finally reached this point.
This timer was tested extensively from the beginning of January until just a few days ago, with more than a hundred test runs being done, which were compiled here. During this process, many small bugs in it were fixed. Despite this and because of how complex this game is and the vast amount of categories and variables it has, it's possible there could be some more bugs we haven't caught. If any more are found, they will be fixed as soon as possible. We think that with over a month of testing coupled with how long the boards have been locked, it's time we finally release it.
We won't be explaining the list of features this LRT has on this post, since you can see that here.
You can already find the new LRT on Edit Splits, by searching Resident Evil 4. Simply press Activate, and configure the settings however you like. If you have been using Scriptable Autosplitter through the Layout, remember to disable it.
Getting a proper understanding of why we've had to change LRTs once again is difficult, as there is so much to explain. Last year we published a 19 page document on our Discord's runners channel (available only for runners of the game) attempting to explain in detail all of this, so if you're confused, that may be a good place to start.
In short, the previous LRT had a multitude of issues that we've wanted to solve for several years and we've finally been able to.
Since the new LRT is slower than the previous one (mainly due to not pausing at all during inventory blackscreens, which was a huge problem with the last two LRTs), noone can PB with the boards as they stand right now. Because of that, it was agreed upon in the discord, among the runners of the game, to retime the whole board, making all runs "slower" (including all obsolete runs) using an automated script. The currently chosen methodology for this is to take the RTA or IGT of each run, substract a set value that varies depending on the category, and place the resulting time on the LRT attribute of the run. These values were obtained through observing the average LRT-IGT (LRT-RTA for Assignment Ada) difference on each category.
We will follow through with this plan in a few days, so if you want to suggest a different solution you should do it now.
After all runs have been retimed, the boards will be OPEN and submissions will begin getting accepted.
Another important thing we would highly encourage you to do is to take a look at the rules, since they've been completely reformatted, as well as many new rules added and others changed. All of this was properly discussed/voted on between runners on the Discord just like the LRT.
Somewhat related to the rules, it's crucial to note that any new submissions using the previous LRT (the one that released in 2021) will be rejected from now on, since this timer is faster and has many bugs that make it unusable.
Lastly, some more reminders:
-
The route for most categories in the game, as well as where/when to equip certain weapons and where/when to ditman have changed drastically with the new timer. We suggest you take a look at some runs using it to get a sense of these things, so you don't lose a ton of time by using an obsolete route.
-
Like we've said many times before, we would highly appreciate it if you join our Discord server and if you have at least one verified run in any of our three boards (Steam, Console, Category Extensions), you can request the Runner role to get access to all community-wide discussions.
-
You can always contact any of the moderators for any issues you encounter. Again, the best place to do so is in our Discord.
Hey everyone! We will not be accepting any Steam submissions on SRC for the time being as we prepare for some important updates which include:
- many rule changes
- testing and eventually releasing a completely different version of the Load Remover Timer we use
- retiming all the runs in the board to adjust to this new timer.
To be fair, we will still be accepting the current 7 runs on the queue as soon as we can but all submissions starting today won't be accepted. We cannot say for sure how long this "lockdown" will last but it could be several weeks. We strongly suggest you join the Discord server to get a full understanding of what's going on and why. If you're a runner of the game (meaning you have at least one verified run on Steam, Console or Category Extensions) all you have to do is join and request the Runner server role through a channel specifically made for this.
Salut, ce run a été fait en difficulté Amateur, dans ce mode de jeu t'as déjà le fusil à pompe de base dans l'inventaire dès le début du jeu.
Hey Auddy, thanks for making this detailed document, I had already read this document before so as you already know I agree with pretty much everything in it and with what Kromer just said, and I think a lot of runners will agree with that too.
There's just way too many versions and records that at this point it has just become a meme to get a record on one of those, the only version where it's hard to get a record now is Steam 60, and that version has become so competitive that it's actually hard to get a record on any of the categories now (including things like NG Easy, NG+ Pro, etc. difficulties that were almost never touched in the past) and the reason why it's so competitive is precisely because there's only 1 version for Steam and people focused on it for the past years, that's kind of what we're trying to reproduce.
Ideally we want to make the same for console and only have a few (2 in that case) versions to run, I like the idea of the "fresh start" for everyone (including old/top runners) to get new records again from scratch and optimizing new versions like we used to (and the 2 USB versions are doing that since there's pretty much no time on the board for these 2 "new" versions), it kind of reminds me of what we did with sawken some months ago on PC '07 when all these exclusive glitches were found, we both went there and tried to optimize the runs and it was pretty fun and now that version actually has decent records (back when this version was such a meme and times being almost slower than PS2 lol), and of course we could have pushed it even more if we wanted to or if there were more runners, which is precisely what we want to do for the suggested versions on this document.
And yeah I agree with what Kromer said on the srcom boards thing, there's actually too many possibilities for the runners, "people should have as many options as they desire" ending up in people being lost and not caring, like there's almost more categories than runners at this point haha, so there's definitely something we could do about this, kind of the old SD/HD/Steam separation but better, what I didn't like about that old one is it still had all the versions, they were just merged, so you could have a very good Wii time and it would be at the bottom of the boards below the PS4 or 360 runs because these version were faster, sure filters exist, but yeah.
I agree that we could just keep all the current versions as it is on the leaderboard sheet, that board is way more detailed, documented and complete than the srcom board anyway and it exists even before the RE4 srcom page was created back in 2014 and I'm still continuing to update it and add more features more than ever.
But for the srom boards (which in the end will always be what people look at, no matter what) it's good to only have the 3 versions, again, it doesn't have to be the versions that are mentioned on the document, if everyone agrees to play on Switch, sure, but there's a reason why these versions were the ones that were suggested and not others.
Some other (new) runners also look at the srcom boards to decide what version or categories they'll start to run, so having a new board with only these 3 versions and also less categories for each of the 3 would be pretty nice, we already have some runs on the 2 non-Steam versions so we could start by adding those as a start and hopefully it will make people want to learn them.
There's also this thing about Steam being so optimized that it will start being very bad to try to improve the runs and it already is for some runners, having talked to sawken for example he mentioned several times that he'll quit (NG Pro Steam 60) after he gets record, because it's just so hard and exhausting to get it, now that he got he might actually do other things. Not to mention that other categories like NG+ are basically dead on Steam now because of the meme LRT ditmans, the category is just a ditman simulator and not fun at all to run or to watch.
I also agree that this should have been done earlier, but oh well, it's still not too late.
I'd like to hear other opinions on this, either here or in the discord to see, but that's definitely a topic that we should think about.
Hey guys,
So an LRT was made for the PC '07 version, as you probably know, PC '07 was part (and still is) of the console board and is timed by IGT just like the old Steam board was and just like the Steam version, the IGT depends on the loading times which depend on your PC specs, that's why an LRT was made for this.
In order to include the LRT for PC '07 we had to move it to another board (to include the "Time without loads" feature which was not compatible with the console board), so here's the new board: https://www.speedrun.com/resident_evil_4_2007
Notes:
- We're not taking care of that board, we are not mods there.
- The current PC '07 on this board will not get removed and the board will remain the same, people can still submit times on this board (the times submitted will be IGT).
- This board still is the official board for PC '07 as the new LRT hasn't really fully been tested, if people want to use the LRT and submit runs on the new other board at the same time they can.
The LRT was made by @LeonSReckon, any questions you may have should be asked to him, we're not responsible for that LRT and not responsible for that board.
Thanks,
Hey guys,
So most of you probably know from the discord post already, but for those who missed it, we're going to do a tournament, we're not sure yet about the format as we need to list all the participants, if you want to participate please fill this form:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScAQV2QJ7WrViD9vO4WXDgRfjz432lQ81lxbATPWE8Iq0FP4w/viewform
If you have a doubt about the times in general, it's always good to double check the google sheet leaderboard (you have the link at the top of this page next to the discord link or just on the left below my profile picture), that sheet has all the runs unlike srcom, I get questions about WR everytime and most of the time the actual WR isn't the one shown on srcom for whatever reason (the fact that people don't submit their runs or can delete it after submitting makes the whole website not reliable, but I guess more user friendly than a "bad-looking sheet").
Also about that run, I remember I retimed it a long time ago before it went to YouTube, downloaded the Twitch highlight and retimed it and got 4:42.983 (that's why the title has that) and then it uploaded to YouTube and somehow added 1 frame which seems to be 4:43.000 indeed, I would trust the original video though so I don't know.
Serie S is not really a version, it's more like a "sub version" inside Series X, just like you have PS4 and PS4 Pro under the PS4 leaderboard. So you should submit your runs as Series X and then add Series S on the other question below on the submission page, it's more like a filter.
Hey,
Apparently the notification system isn't working right now (same for the new runs), so I just saw your message. It's his 1:43:55 on RE4C, but there's no video. There's still a video from his 1:45:42 though (on Twitch and on YouTube as well), so it's the "official" WR. The 1:46:45 is just an old PB, but since there's still a video from his 1:45:42, the one from his 1:46:45 is not really useful. But technically yeah, his best run (on Normal) is his 1:43:55 (the one on our website, I put his 1:45:42 video so you can click on it but with a 1:43:55 time on the board, because it's better than no video at all).
That being said, the NG Normal category is not really a popular category (anymore), so there are almost no (more) runs on it, which explains why the NG Normal WRs are not really good... (they should be faster than NG Pro runs, but NG Normal is not really an optimized category, it used to be back in the day, but with the new strats/glitches, the times are obsolete now).
The funny thing is that a guy found that glitch more than 1 year ago on PS3, but no one managed to reproduce the glitch (or even knew about this video). The setup was weird though, and his inventory was hacked, so yeah, but the glitch was real, he did it the same way as on the new video.
I tried to redo the glitch today and it worked, this time I opened the last door and of course we can go through and continue. I did it in a different way this time so I decided to highlight this as well:
I tried to redo it after this attempt and it didn't work... But this might be "easier" than the first one.
But yeah as I said above, to have the door opened like that is easy on PS2(/PC 2007), it seems to be random on the other versions. However, this might help:
What I do to have the door opened like this by the guy: at 00:00:01 I don't go left (quick turn or something), I go on the right so the red guy and the other one just run, then, the archer and the flail guy will always open the door like this. I don't think it's possible to have (consistently) the red guy and his friend going away like that on the other versions since the red guy opens the door very early, but maybe the archer and the flail guy can open the door by running like this if we go on the right as I did at the beginning (even if the amount/type of enemies is not the same compared to PS2).
Edit: This time I wasn't moving, I was just waiting for the guy to open the door.
Edit 2: I tried to time it by removing the time when I wasn't moving and it saves about 48 seconds (NG+ PS2), compared to a perfect (or normal I should say) room (door stays open, no damage, etc.), so that's a pretty huge time save. Of course, this is nearly impossible to do at the moment, but just to see the possible time save.
Hey guys,
I was just practising my strat for PS2 in the last room of 5-4 and I found this ^^ :
I'm pretty sure it's a new glitch, I've never seen this glitch before, but I might be wrong. The video is in French but we can easily understand and see what happened.
As you can see, we can almost skip the entire room by going to the final door (we don't even have to kill the red guy, but I killed him because of course I didn't know, I didn't expect to find this). I don't know why I didn't open the last door, probably because I'm dumb 4Head And probably because I couldn't retry the glitch after going through (of course I could have loaded a save ^^) The "open" appears on screen so I guess we can easily go through, we don't need a key for this door.
I tried to redo it multiple times but unfortunately I couldn't (I tried without Ditman and with a grenade as well but it didn't work), I thought it was easy to do because there are some glitches like that (with the door) in the game that are very easy to do, but apparently this one is very hard (unless we find a setup...), so I guess I was very lucky this time (as always when we find glitches ^^)
Don't hesitate to test it on your side and tell me, I don't think it's possible for all the versions though, but we can still try it. Also, even if it's possible on the other versions, it might be harder to setup because on PS2 (and probably PC 2007) the 2 guys almost always open this door by running like that, so it's a particular strat.
