6-button mode allows one to utilize Joe's actions using single buttons. This also allows one to speedrun the kunai-less categories that are listed.

It is not recommended to use this mode for any of the categories that are not kunai-less due to wall clips not being able to be performed in an efficient manner.

To start, you're going to need two 6-button Sega Genesis (or other applicable) controllers for this.

  1. Plug both of the controllers into the system of your choice and head to the main menu.
  2. Highlight "OPTIONS", but do not select this.
  3. With the first controller, hold the "Mode" button on the top right of the controller.
  4. With the second controller (while still holding "Mode"), hold UP on the D-pad and the C button.
  5. While you have "Mode", UP, and C pressed, press the start button on the first controller. If you've done it right, you will be in the options menu with it showing "OPTION" at the top of the screen.

You can then select your difficulty and kunai count.

The key thing is to see if "OPTION" is shown at the top of the options menu. That's how you know if you've done it correctly.

  • A = Block
  • B = Melee
  • C = Jump
  • X = Ninjitsu
  • Y/Z = Throw kunai
  • "Mode" = Change ninjitsu

It's a work in progress. It's not even halfway finished, but it's a decent start. (This is a playlist. The embedded video is just the first)

Rainfallnow, I agree with you on this. Andrewg also had a bit to say on it. https://twitter.com/AndrewgSpeedrun/status/1064518966301868034

Given what I read and now I've seen this response, you can guarantee any time I run this game from here on out, it'll be with handcam. Did a bit of attempts yesterday and got 7:10 on it. The game is rough on my arm for extended periods. But yeah, no harm no foul. If you guys wanna take down my vid, it doesn't bother me if you want to do hand verification for top runs. Here was yesterday's stream:

Hey Vec. Glad to see you around.

So this category can definitely be a thing. One thing to note is that 6-button mode can be achieved with two controllers. Ideally, this is how one would perform a category like this as there is an exclusive button for melee and another for kunai (they're shurikin in the options, but Joe throws kunai). To acquire this mode, follow this: You need a 6 button controller plugged into port 1 and any regular controller in port 2. Highlight "Options" on the main menu. Normally when you're in the Options menu, it says "Options" at the top, with an S on the end. Highlight Options but don't go into it yet. On Controller 1, hold the Mode button and on Controller 2, hold UP on the D-Pad and the C Button. With all these buttons held down, press Start on controller 1. Now you're in the Options menu, it now just says "Option" at the top without an S. This means 6 Button mode is on. A is the Block button. B is a Melee attack. C is Jump X uses Ninjitsu magic Y and Z throws Kunai.

With that enabled, it would probably make better instead of accidentally picking up kunai and jumping into a pit just so you can achieve 0 kunai and be able to melee again.

If you have a run of it using the 6-button mode, I'll create the category.

Now that I hit sub 25, maybe I can continue making this.

Why or why not? 🤔 Some have voiced their opinions so I wanted to actually put that into a forum post/poll. You can leave a vote in the strawpoll if you're not the talkative type or if you want, post your thoughts here.

All feedback is appreciated.

I suppose if I created this, my stance is needed to get this rolling:

If you as a moderator have not provided anything for a community in a very long time, whether it be a guide, a forum post/reply, your own speedrun, or a verification of a run, you should probably step down considering there are others that would fill those shoes rather well. It's not a matter of being mean or any of the sort and it should never be taken as such. It's a matter of passing the baton and telling the next guys in line "Good luck, dude. I had a lotta fun with this and I hope you have fun too."

If a moderator steps out of line, it's not hard for a super mod to lay the hammer down. I know this, because I'm a super mod for my speedgame. I actually removed someone recently due to 100% inactivity.

Again, this is a post for those people who feel the need to voice their stances on this because it has been brought up before. I could have lived and lost no sleep not voicing mine, but nobody has stepped up to make a post like this. I hope what I said is considered.

Thanks dudes. Happy punchcarding.

I'm actually talking with a few to develop a category that would include Muffet, but she wouldn't be the sole focus. Stay tuned.

If you have any suggestions of what to include that I might miss (even if it seems obvious), drop it here and I'll do my best to include it.

Changed the categories from the Any% categories to simply what the difficulty is. Changed the rules to reflect that kunai count does not matter, and in part, I have removed the option to include if you did or did not use kunai. Changed the rules of Expert to reflect that it is the fastest category, due to certain in-game elements being different.

Hey, imposteri. I personally use Kega Fusion. I tried using Gens, but it didn't record my directional inputs correctly, leading to bad gameplay. Bizhawk is another people use that I hear great things about.

Totally allowed, as it doesn't give any advantage over 3 button mode. It's mainly a preference.

I didn't mention this in the rules, because not many people know about 6 button mode.

Edit: This is now in the rules.
