You can skip the Mecha Birdo fight by going to the left from the screen directly above the really slow platform room. So another possible route is Mike Tyson, backtrack, Kraidgief, Mother Brain, Bowser & Wart & Wily, Mecha Birdo (specifically just the red circle), Dracula, Mecha Dragon, The Guy.
