I went ahead and submitted a run without turbo. some rules clarification would still be nice though! turbo is definitely an advantage in some spots and most leaderboards would split turbo runs off into a separate category.
Hey there, I'm thinking of running this game and noticed the WR is using Turbo to shoot while walking backwards. Is that allowed on this board? I didn't see anything in the rules about it and wanted to make sure before practicing more. Thanks!
Most emulators ok! Mednafen, Bizhawk, etc. Maybe not dodgy smartphone emulators unless you can prove they run at the correct speed.
Not sure how to replicate this yet, but this happened last night XD
edit: ok, got it figured out maybe! seems to be caused by taking damage while jumping just to the left of the tree, and the screen can be continued to be scrolled as you move to the right. potential time save on the boss fight since you won't have to wait for him to walk onto the screen.
first Low% run completed!
Very fun. Tons of places to save time of course, I'll keep working on this. level 6 boss fight was ridiculous XD
Sweet, thanks for the quick responses guys. I will hopefully try some runs pretty soon!
Ok, before I get in too deep here with Low % routing, what might be some potential rules for a Low% run?
Other than the required items to progress (ladder for level 7, 3 pairs of wings for level 8 ) - Is it ok to pick up items and just not use them? or be forced to avoid them entirely? And if you must avoid any unneeded items, must you only pick up the ladder/wings in the level where you must use them in?
And what about picking up Ks? I think the only unavoidable ones are in Level 7 after you fall through the floor. In some quick testing, the fewest I can seem get through that section is 6 of them (one of the Ks on the stairs is pretty tight but avoidable).
Avoiding items makes for an interesting added challenge and forces a different path than Any% but at the same time I don't want to completely scare off anyone who wants to try Low% at all. Let me know what y'all think!
Cool, yeah all good with me. I think I will try some Low% this month, I'll let you guys know how it goes XD
yeah I also think Low% would be neat. it seems like only required items are the ladder in level 7 and wings in level 8, correct?
I finished a damageless run during this magical month of Karnovember, and thought I'd see if there's any interest in creating a new category.
My feelings will not be hurt if the answer is no :) It was fun, not drastically different from Any% but need to be a little more careful in some spots. I'll keep working on this a bit more.
Throwing this out there too, I'd be happy to help out with modding duties on this game along with Devil's Crush.
The existing category is called All WRs, and the new strats with the event skips still claim all of the game's WRs on the Cave of Fame. The rules also clearly stated "except Clubbing" which makes sense because there is no WR to get for that event.
Rather than change the existing rules / category title and remove runs that were already verified, I think it would make more sense to have a new separate category that doesn't utilize the skips. Something like a 100% category where you must win both rounds of clubbing, get three 66+ foots Mate Toss, three 30 foot Dino Vaults, win Dino Race, win both rounds of Fire Start, and win 1st place in Saber Race.
Sounds good to me. it's basically physically impossible to split on last hit without a foot pedal
A potential runner had some questions about this so I finally updated the rules section. Feel free to provide feedback if I missed anything. I included the standard stuff for most NES runs.
oh thats a good point, I haven't measured that. I think it also could just end up losing time anyway if you have to wait a little while before even entering the door.
another long shot spot where it might be of use (where I originally ran into it during practice) is if you get a ?pill from the Spider boss in level 3, and do the skip at the samurai boss door in level 4
lol amazing. never seen that before. did that softlock the game or were you able to leave the room afterwards?
