Just out of curiosity and to try it out for fun, what would you say the rules for a punch-only run be?

Would holy fire for example be out of the question because it deals passive damage? Are items that have stuff like Nova procs or Thorns damage banned? Summons? Werewolf/bear form? (just not using a weapon at any point)

These sorts of things should be considered when thinking about new challenging ways to play the game

I'm willing to give it a go, even if it remains an unofficial category

is this the start of my very own fan club? PogChamp

appreciate it! maybe one day I'll get there Kappa

I've done that a couple times before. :P easy to forget a dropdown menu. Easy fix though

Hey all, I made a quick little "leaderboard" for Players X runs just so you can see the interest that is already there in the category - if you have runs to add to it, let me know! I can always make new tabs for other new category types too

I'm thinking, if nothing else, there could be a spreadsheet that runners of those categories could upkeep as a sort of unofficial leaderboard, and if there are enough runs in a particular category perhaps that one can become a main one just through popularity? It could be posted in the resources section or pinned to a thread or something like that. That way we can know which categories could end up being popular before committing to adding them to the leaderboard

I understand that bringing this up and asking about adding dozens of categories can complicate things in terms of modding and having a clean looking board etc, but the real reason I'm bringing it up is to make more people aware that there are more than just speedrun.com categories to speedrun, I think it can encourage a lot more players to play, because there are more options to fit their playstyles but still be competitive. If not speedrun.com categories, are there other ways we can (uniformly and unbiasedly) track times in these miscellaneous categories? Can we agree on some rules or conditions that reduce the number of categories so they can be on speedrun.com? (Eg, no differentiation between sorc/sin, necro/barb, etc for 2 player speedruns).

Hey everyone,

This has probably been brought up before, but there has been recent activity and discussion among other runners about different categories, and I was wondering if there is possibility to include them as new categories, and discuss exactly what each one should entail. I'm seeing some people already doing runs (myself included) and it'd be nice to gauge interest among the rest of the community

P8 - purely doing a run on /players 8 from character creation to last boss (Abigail% for example)

Px - Ability to change /players settings at will to gain exp and items in optimal locations. Being a very commonly used feature of a single player game, and the fact it can help a player go much faster, and thus is true to the nature of speedrunning, i feel it should be a more looked at category

100% - All quests in the quest page, including killing the Cow King

Multiplayer - Using TCP/IP or Battle.net to organize a multiplayer run (not sure if the number of players matter) - Timer starts at last person to join, or first player to leave town?

Seeded - Using a set seed or map file for the category so the maps are the same, reducing RNG and increasing consistency between runs (no losing runs to 2/3/4 way arcane, bad jungle, etc). I know that the nature of the randomness and the ability to read maps are what diablo speedrunning is mostly all about, but also the nature of speedrunning in general is finding ways to complete the game the fastest, and finding a GG map seed can accomplish that as well as reduce time lost in runs to going wrong ways. Still have to manage exp and items drops etc

Please discuss! I'd like to see more interest in these categories.

@Teo- I tested a couple HC deaths and then alt-F4ing, it turns out the game probably automatically saves when a death happens to prevent something like trying to cheat around it, so altf4 and relaunch still shows the character as slain

On the -seed thing, has there ever been discussion about seeded runs? can everyone run the same map? (probably worthy of a new thread)

if a game crashes mid run, for most games as far as i know, the run is still allowed to continue, no save or not. alt f4 is basicaslly a forced crash, or like hard resetting a console game. IMO it can be allowed. My only question is, is it allowed to be used if it's possible to reset something you're only allowed to do once (eg the hellforge quest after not getting the gem/rune you wanted), or can it be used to continue playing a hardcore character that just died?

I've noticed something that some players experience and some dont, and im not entirely sure what causes it. For me, when I save/exit, sometimes the game locks up for up to 10 seconds (sometimes ive gotten even worse ones). But some others never get this. It doesn't seem to be an SSD thing, as i have everything installed on SSDs, so its gotta be something else. I'd much rather find the direct cause of the save/exit locking up than resort to alt F4 and relaunching the game

I've tried multiplayer normal runs before, it's a great idea overall, but connection issues and such were really frustrating, it just wasn't for me. GOod luck getting a team together though!

The link to the discord is in the"resources" section of this page!

I believe this sort of category exists for the TAS runs, and r might've existed before as well but no one ran it. But if you want to stay rubbing it, go ahead! Maybe use it for races and stuff. If it gets enough interest in sure the mods wouldn't mind adding it - just look at the Pacifist category!

Another rule clarification question:

At the start of the run, it's pretty much the norm to set players to 8 right away. However, Diablo 2 has this feature(?) in single player mode in which it keeps the last /players setting used if the game has not been closed since you last used /players - even if you create a new character.

Would it be necessary to actually show that you typed /players at the start of each run? or can we take advantage of the fact the game remembers the last setting used? It can be implied that /players 8 is the start of every run at this point since we farm those chests for the first part of the run

Let me know your thoughts

Question -

Would using keyboard macros be allowed? it would be tiny amounts of time saved up over the course of a run, but for example having extra keys on a keyboard set to "[enter]/players 1-8 [enter]" instead of stopping to type it in all the time could be helpful - have one key for each player level you want to use. If not, doing it on the run and getting good at doing it at the same time as doing other things could also be good practice, I'm just asking the question because I know some people might find it useful and to clarify if it'd be allowed

British Columbia, Canadablazer-flamewing8 years ago

Yeah I think "if you hit an enemy, you immediately leave the game" is much better than "if you hit an enemy, the run is over"

However, "if you kill an enemy by accidentally hitting it, the run is over" can still apply since you would have accrued experience from it

There is a glitch where the graphics for some spells don't show up but the hitboxes still work, is this not the same glitch?

British Columbia, Canadablazer-flamewing8 years ago

Reading all this discussion and finalization of rules make me very excited to try this run again when I get back from my work trip!

British Columbia, Canadablazer-flamewing8 years ago

As much as I would have loved to see an actual leaderboard for categories like this, I do agree that it would be fairly cumbersome to set one up like this and too much work for mods. BUt that doesn't mean we can't set up our own version of a leaderboard for extra categories, verified by others who do those runs (like using Google spreadsheets or something like that) - I know when I did my run I immediately had it disqualified by other runners (I wasn't even sure I did it right in the first place) but I was okay with that - it was fun regardless and I do plan on trying it again in the future

I do think that the attitude of "well, no one is gonna run it" or "it was only ran for a week and died" doesn't really reflect the nature of having fun while at the same time promoting healthy competition - afterall, the Hell Barb runs ARE still being run today, even if there haven't been any completed ones in a while, as it IS a difficult run. I know Ryu and Arctic are still at it. Not everyone is in it to be the absolute fastest, a lot are here to challenge themselves, have fun, break the norm, have conversations... the list goes on!

Happy running, everyone!

I also think that doing Nightmare runs can change how much time you spend grinding levels, grinding for certain items, quests, etc compared to Hell, so it can definitely warrant its own play style that's different from Normal or Hell.

Also, would it be viable to consider 100% quest runs as well?
