Hello, I am currently practising in mednafen with plans to submit a run, and would like some clarification if the following changes to the configuration file are allowed, please.

These changes are purely to make the game more visually improved from a standpoint of the window size and clarity. I have made the settings changed bold to make them stand out.

This option below is for bilinear scaling, which due to the low resolution of the game, makes it very blurry when it is enabled. Setting it to 0 makes the game display as hard pixels, which looks much cleaner and more accurate, making me wonder why this is enabled by default in the first place.

;Enable (bi)linear interpolation.

psx.videoip 1

There are these settings to remove the overscan black bars on the top and bottom of the screen. The default first scanline for both is 0, and the default last scanline is 239 for NTSC and 287 for PAL. I spent a bit of time working out the exact values to remove them for both.

;Last displayed scanline in NTSC mode.

psx.slend 227

;Last displayed scanline in PAL mode.

psx.slendp 260

;First displayed scanline in NTSC mode.

psx.slstart 12

;First displayed scanline in PAL mode.

psx.slstartp 25

The horizontal overscan bars can be reduced in size, but not removed entirely, if this value is set from 1 to 0.

;Show horizontal overscan area.

psx.h_overscan 1

As I use a 40 inch 3840 x 2160 TV for my PC, the default window scaling is far too small for me to comfortably play the game. I worked out that changing these values makes it so I can not only make the window larger, but also correct the aspect ratio for both NTSC and PAL, as they each differ due to the resolutions they run at. These values are for my 2160 vertical screen, so halving these values would work for 1080 vertical.

Set these values for NTSC to display at 4:3.

;Scaling factor for the X axis in windowed mode.

psx.xscale 7.900000

;Scaling factor for the Y axis in windowed mode.

psx.yscale 8.000000

Set these values for PAL to display at 4:3.

;Scaling factor for the X axis in windowed mode.

psx.xscale 7.100000

;Scaling factor for the Y axis in windowed mode.

psx.yscale 8.000000

As far as I can tell, none of these settings should alter the way the emulator runs the game at all, instead only changing the way the window looks. However, I thought it best to ask first, as I have watched many runs and noticed that these settings don't seem to ever be changed.

I am aware that some manual changes to the configuration file do have to be made to set up certain types of controllers, but I wanted to make sure these changes are also allowed, as there is nothing in the rules to say the window scaling or appearance settings cannot be changed to make for better playing and recording.

Thank you for your time reading this.
