I tested this a few times, and was able to replicate what you are talking about, and I'm pretty sure it doesn't save any time unfortunately. You can listen to the audio and still hear two wipes on the window like normal before the cutscene is entered even when you call for Mario right before, so I'd say that it's the same time, just a different animation that plays.
