If you're just looking to record those consoles, why not use an SD cap card like gv-usb2? That is certainly cheaper than anything avermedia.
On the topic of NES adapters, the only time I know of where a 3rd party adapter is allowed is when you use a 72-60pin converter to play an NES game on a Famicom (or vice versa but that is harder). That's allowed since the two consoles are the same hardware, just different pins (and the Famicom has the benefit of stereo sound).
But other than that Furry is right - 3rd party adapters to do backwards compatibility is almost always banned.
Just stop, you have zero idea what you're talking about. I wanted to avoid saying that but it's clear now you really don't.
This website has moderators that verify runs for every game on here. If they find a run that is cheated in some way with illegal hardware modifications or something like that, then the run is removed. There is no cheating that gets by on here unless there are lazy moderators, but for the most part, each game has dedicated mods for it. Also on that train of thought, a lot of games require video for a minimum top 10 times so your point about people not recording their runs is just plain wrong.
There are hundreds of games on here run on PC so again, I'm not sure why you're trying to say it needs to grow. People add games on here all the time and the site is constantly increasing the number of games and runners it has. And most consoles load the same across all models (except for newer systems, but each game handles that accordingly). So there is no need to eliminate load times since they are uniform (or only differ by extremely small amounts) for every run. PC gaming is different and most remove load times via an autosplitter so that it's not "pay to win" with whoever has the fastest PC.
As a final point, I'm sure there are no users on this site who are as worked up over the title of a world record like you're painting them to be. Most runners don't care about WR and enjoy the feeling of competition and improvement as well as seeing the game pushed to it's limits. WR is a meaningless title and most runners will say that, nobody is claiming that every time recorded on here is the fastest time ever ever done for a game, it's just the fastest time ever posted here.
So again, you clearly have no idea about what speedrunning is, what this site is, or how speedrunning is handled. I'd recommend stopping here or learning more about this hobby before you try to paint it in a false/negative light and start thinking of ways to "improve" it.
I've never heard of playing an NES cart on a SNES, I have no idea how legitimate that is but I highly doubt it's allowed in NES speedrunning.
And Gameboy Games are only allowed to be played on a SNES through the use of SuperGameBoy 2. The SuperGameBoy 1 ran games faster than a real GB, so you must use the SGB 2 (which is JP only so you need to remove the tabs in an American SNES to use it).
Probably gonna wanna not put this in the main Zelda forum and move it to the ALTTP forum. I doubt many people (if any) check or follow the series forum because the individual game forums are much more active given the large number of games.
Im not quite sure if this is a question or a suggestion or something else.
This should be something that is a game by game basis and not site wide. If you have a game that you wish to see this for, then ask the moderators to create a category for 100% trophy completion or whatever you want to call it. It would most likely be a Misc. category since it'll be segmented, but again, that can be decided game by game by the moderators. Then people can submit screenshots of their PSN or XBox Live screen as proof of their time when submitting it. (but please dont request categories like this unless you plan on actually doing it or have people who want to do it).
As a side note, the reason you don't see trophy completion runs often is that those kind of runs usually take much longer than someone wants to do in a single segment. And for the most part segmented runs can be hard to prove unless you have proof of every segment. The time displayed in PSN/XBL might alleviate the latter issue, but that's really up to a game's mods. Just be warned that some games may not have mods open to this because of the segmented nature of it.
I feel this is needed as many people like me view most speedruns in general as a pointless way to rush through games achieving nothing while encouraging cheating involving skipping through areas of the game
I feel like anyone, including yourself, who truly thinks this about speedrunning doesn't actually understand what speedrunning is. If you really view speedrunning that way, then you have a very sad vision of this hobby as it is much more than what you've boiled it down to here. (And calling it "cheating" is a good way to make enemies and irritate people because it really shows you have no idea what you're actually talking about.)
nvm deleting since Bullets was a few seconds faster.
Just a note about the Wii VC thing - there is a difference between Wii VC and running an emulator on the Wii.
It is possible to install SNES and NES emulators on the Wii via Homebrew (there might be an N64 one too) and if you play a game through those, then it is not Wii VC, it's emu. If you're playing the game from an installed channel, then it's from Wii VC. Just wanted to make sure that distinction was clear since it is possible to do emu on a Wii (but for what it's worth, the emus run much slower than console and should never be used).
I'm assuming that release most closely emulates the SNES. Similar to how Project64 1.6 or 1.7 (I think) is more accurate than Project64 2.x - the earlier versions were closer to the actual running of the N64 hardware while later ones decided to optimize to make the games run faster.
Yup, Livesplit is basically just "run and go" once you change your splits. The real "challenge" or exploration comes when you're trying to customize it to something unique for you and your stream. It has a myriad of settings you can play with and the best way to get the hang of those settings is to just constantly mess with them and see what you like/what works best for you.
Most games will just require a video for a run to be accepted. Although there are cases where a game will only require a video if you reach a certain threshold time.
A timer is optional but can be pleasing for a viewer (some timers are WSplit and Livesplit). If you wish to stream, you can use OBS or XSplit to connect to your Twitch, Hitbox, Beam, etc. account to livestream your runs. Otherwise, any video on YT will suffice for games that require it.
Any other game specific questions can most likely be answered the forums for the game. You can always check the rules too for the game to make sure they don't have anything special that they require such as screenshots of something if you don't have/need a video.
Good luck.
Yeah, it's most likely that you both requested the game within a couple days of one another and kirkq just didn't notice that both games were the same and neither of you knew the other was submitting it.
It was an honest, simple mistake. There's no reason to get so worked up and bent out of shape over it. Just relax, this site is handled by a lot of people who do it in their spare time, so just have patience and understand that sometimes little mistakes happen. It'll be fixed soon enough Im sure.
There is already a user by the name of "Jupiter". Make sure to search the username you wish to change your account to to see if it's taken already.
Yup, that's why TSA's runs were on there for so long until like 5-6 years ago when people realized he spliced a ton of his runs. SDA was not perfect nor was it that in depth.
.lss is the extension for Livesplit files. Just run Livesplit and select "open splits" and then pick the Paper Mario Glitchless .lss file.
Just for clarification, a SuperGameboy 2 (and any JP SNES games) will work on an American SNES if you just remove the little plastic tabs inside the cartridge slot. It's not hard and takes no time at all with some pliers. If you have a SNES ready, and don't want to hunt down a gameboy player startup disc (which can run kinda expensive) then go that route. Otherwise Gameboy player all the way.
Also a note about the Gameboy player - the actual player doesn't depend on region, but make sure your startup disc matches the region of your Gamecube.
Wind Waker is in my opinion the worst 3D Zelda game and one of the worst overall. I find it to be extremely slow paced and not very fun or engaging. I wouldn't recommend that to be your first Zelda game as it's not indicative of the other amazing titles in the series.
I second the recommendation for A Link to the Past - it's got a good difficulty curve, excellent gameplay and is very fun to explore. Definitely a game I wish I could play for the first time again.
