the timer starts when the host creates the farm so there will be a bit of time that player 2 is not connected. the best way for another player to join is of there friendslist.

It definitely will be! Though I don't know if anyone has routed a run yet and as far as I'm aware we're waiting for the full release of 1.3 to update speedrun.com with co-op categories.
