video is set to private bud, I will have to remove it if that's not fixed
answering your job while setting a record is a chad move; I don't even care that the start was suboptimal
This run was re-timed to reflect that time starts when clicking "continue" at character creation, NOT when selecting your starting faction.
Just FYI, adding sail and flag images to the game folder and using them in runs is allowed. Please don't mod your game otherwise, though- adding custom sails/flags is a documented feature of the PC version, but any other mods, even cosmetic ones, make runs harder to varify.
Happy sailing!
There's no way mods are allowed. I'm not a moderator so I can't answer this with authority but that kind of thing is more or less universally banned from speedruns.
First of all, I think we can all give a big thanks to Kirk for his assessment of the situation. Levelling with us is something site admins rarely do, and it's awesome to see genuine user interaction like this.
My opinion as to the situation is this: the best course of action is to revert the site's layout. I understand that it might be difficult to do at this point, but it seems like fixing the huge list of issues be just as much work (I guess I could be wrong, but at least reverting to the old layout would stop people complaining).
The fact is that there are far more desktop/laptop users than there are mobile ones, and nobody would be trying to actually "use" the site on mobile in terms of submitting runs, confirming runs, editing rules, etc (you know, the stuff that makes it a speedrunning leaderboard site). Mobile users, I can only assume, are watching runs, watching streams, or maybe talking in forums. Not creating new run categories or editing the colour scheme of a game's page.
So making the site better on mobile, in my mind, is VERY secondary to having the actual functional aspects of the site not only working, but easy to use. The new layout needs not only all the bugs squashed, but needs tweaking to get it back into a state where it's just as intuitive and appealing as it was before. In which case... why not just go back to how it was?
Also, why could there not just be a mobile version of the site? Wikipedia, for example, launched a mobile version (you can even access it on desktop) which had no impact on the normal version of the site. I know that this would be far more difficult and time-consuming to develop, but in my mind, it's better to keep desktop users happy while trying to figure out the mobile side of things.
That's just my opinion, though. I'm sure there are a lot of good arguments for "pushing through" with fixing the new layout, but if it's going to be a struggle either way... surely the tried and true old layout is the best one to shoot for? Rather than a new one which, even after weeks of bug-squashing, will be ridiculed for being uglier?
New layout is far worse. Everything is too far apart, I dislike the rounded edges on everything and most of all I HATE that you can no longer show rules by default and instead they can only be seen in that hideous, out-of-place popup box.
Also, the "edit game" tools for game moderators is really broken; text overlaps itself and it's really hard to understand.
All in all, I think the new layout is awful. What on EARTH was wrong with the old one?? I can't think of a single thing that's been improved, and tons of things that have been broken. Even putting aside the aesthetics (which I guess some people could like?) it just functions so much worse now.
I like the categories on here so far, but there are obviously a lot more that could be added. Would anyone want to speedrun 100%? Should there be a "Beautiful Wife" run? Or a "Top Pirate" run? They're all possible, but I don't want to add them until people actually have a run. I only added "Wipe Out Spain" because I plan to do it asap.
So, suggest any category you like! I can't promise that I'll add it, because it needs to have sensible rules and be distinct enough from other runs.
