No need to apologize for that. I don't mind making my own notes watching runs. I assumed that Any% would be different enough from No Encount% that making my own notes would be helpful so I followed along SAS_rta's run. Also thank you for letting me know about the Overclocking option :)
Changing the video plugin to Pete's OpenGL2 got the game working! I've got my notes and I'm ready to start doing attempts of Any%! Thank you very much tateragu :)
I want to pick this game up so I got ePSXe and, after some trouble getting the emulator to work at all, got it working (I had to change an overclock setting down to x1, hope that's okay for verification) and started it up with the English patched version. After naming Kai all text boxes in the game appear as black boxes with no text at all. I was wondering if anyone else had this issue when trying to use the English patch.
Has this ever happened to anyone running this? I was doing a Normal Any% run and I was able to get control of Dane much sooner then usual and my game speed was just randomly jacked up. It stayed like that for a while in Chapter 4 before returning to normal, giving me a -40 second gold by the end of the chapter. I'm not saving that gold because I have no idea if it's something that can be repeated. I went back and checked the vod and noticed that it started happening at the first fight of Chapter 4 and stopped after the Quiet Man fight.
I don't see how skipping ahead a few minutes is considered a "New way to play". For me a new way to play is going from NMG to Major Glitches, or No Restrictions to Knife Only as those change how the route is done, how fights are conducted. All this category does is skip a few minutes of cutscenes, and is only really for Jill. For Chris it's barely even a minute of cutscenes that would be skipped for this category.
As for popularity of the category goes I have no doubt that it would be popular, but it's still unnecessary. In the last month we've had nearly 60 runs submitted with only 3 of those runs being non-PC categories.
I'm speaking as someone who's submitted over 200+ runs between the main boards and the category extension boards, putting times into 96 different main board categories and 29 different category extensions, using 5/6 of the offered platforms over the span of 5 years. Cutting out the beginning up until the main hall isn't a new way to play, it's "I don't like this one part of the game, get rid of it." The rest of the run would be exactly the same as a normal PC run route and gameplay wise.
They are also part of the game with ways to save time during them. It might not look like much, but this is a game of frames. The potential frames saved going from start of dining room, to Emblem pickup, to the next hall, to triggering the zombie cutscene, back to the dining room, back to the main hall, and doing the transition can be the difference between saving a second or not by the time the run's over. I am not in favor of this category extension idea, personally.
I'm going to mimic a response that another mod has given to this exact idea being presented before. "Just because you don't like a particular piece of the game you speedrun doesn't mean you just delete it."
I also want to add that when I saw the title of this thread I thought an in game skip was found to skip the beginning and got excited, only to see what was presented. XD
I thought that was already a thing that was done for the B scenario. Considering there's one made for the PC version I don't see why it would be against the rules to do so for any other platform.
Yes, it is normal for the timer to stop right before Tyrant breaks out from the glass. :)
GGs!
Can we submit runs of this game using the Collection of SaGa version? I'm looking to learn the game sometime soon and I have the Steam version. I can always do it on emulator if needed, just wondering if I can use this is all.
In order to play on the PSTV you need to have a PSN account and buy the game from their store, therefore putting it into the PSN category. Taking it out wouldn't be 'correct' as you put it. I understand that the PSN category covers a lot of different ports of the game (PS3, 4, 5, PSTV, PSVita, PSP) and each one has their own differences in load time. What makes PSTV any different to run against then going against a PSP time? Or a PS4? If you want a 'correct' board on the basis that different systems run at different speeds then each individual platform would need to get it's own board. How many people are going to run on the PSVIta boards? The PS4 boards?
Why stop there? There are 3 different versions of Resident Evil that can be run on PlayStation and Emulator with RE: Director's Cut being the fastest. Should we make separate categories in case someone has a slower version of the game? There are 5 different models of PS2s that can be used, all with different internals effecting load times. Should those get their own categories based on the fact that one model PS2 is slightly faster and someone might have a slower time? The English versions of the game are more difficult and slower then the Japanese versions due to text speed and enemy health. Should those be separated as well?
There are already 184 different categories to run in this game (Between the main boards and categories extensions). Further separating things into new categories is only going to make that much worse. If people are worried about their PS3 runs not being able to compete with PSTV then they can always use the filters option and compare themselves to other PS3 runs.
I must have missed the region that was listed when doing the verification. I’ll get that fixed when I’m at my computer. Thank you for pointing that out!
I've been seeing some people doing runs where they go out of their way to not take even a single point of damage, and I've also noticed that RE2 and RE3 both have a No Damage category extension. I'm wondering if the community would be interested in having an official No Damage category for RE1 as a category extension. Could be separated by Original and Arrange mode, could even do Knife Only No Damage for those crazy enough to attempt it.
Posting this here to get more eyes on it as the boards here have a LOT more followers then the CE boards just to get more eyes on the idea.

I will be posting this on the main board as well to get more eyes on it as we only have 69 followers (nice) for CE at the moment. I think it will have similar interest to when we added Zoolander%.
The fastest way to run the Arrange mode category extensions is the PSXjin Emulator. Considering that we added Duckstation because PSXjin is working less and less on newer computers for the main boards though I don't see why that can't be changed for here. One thing I don't want to see is someone not be able to compete because an emulator is outdated. That does raise the concern for the runs using said emulator that are already on the boards. I'm sure we can do something about that though.
You can run the arrange categories with what ever platform allows for arrange to be played, aka Playstation, Emulator, or PSN. What ever platform you choose to do the run on please follow the main board rules for running said platform, for example showing the Playstation drivers if you're running on a PS2 or having the settings for Duckstation set up as if you were running on the main board.
I had this happen to me recently where after the first fight of chapter 4 if you run into the next area the game doesn't load properly and softlocks. This happened to me 3 times today, then I tried walking into it and it was fine, then loaded it again and ran in and it soft locked again. Wondering if this happened to anyone else in the past.
Found out today that you can get this to happen just by holding down the start button instead of mashing it after you choose the difficulty.
