oh no, people decide to have runs where you run the game in one sitting, oh no. that's not real speedrunning, you don't go as fast as segmented runs, and it's much less skill having to get consistent at the whole game rather than repeating one thing until you get it. and oh no, people run on the easiest difficulty to go faster, oh no, that's totally related to restarting every section under non-timed conditions and then timing the fastest attempts of each section altogether.

I suggest using your brain for a little while longer before typing.

IGT ending has changed to turning on Autosave during the Basilisk fight. This means you can quit at the start of the credits (the game won't let you pause after defeating the Basilisk until that point), so you don't have to wait 7 or 8 minutes to find out in-game time. It was originally done the other way so that pausing didn't interrupt the run, but it only takes 5 or 6 seconds to turn on Autosave so it's not a huge deal.

Adding on to pr0te's request, while I'm active and I verified pr0te's recent run (which I know are the usual checks), like he said, I won't be actively running Jinx for a while, whereas he will be, so he's better suited as a supermod.

Yep, that's all okay. OpenEMU is a valid emulator, that gets the same IGT as ePSXe 1.9. RTA is weirdly a lot slower, but that's mainly due to OpenEMU being more accurate with loads - they're exactly the same as PS1's, whereas ePSXe has faster loads, slower black screens. I'll post the current table of results in a guide.

Cambridgeshire, EnglandPurpleSun8 years ago

The main thing we want is the in-game time, but the RTA part can also be helpful.

Splits is fine, and if possible, an image of the file-time for proof that you have run through the game (rather than made up some split times).

Cambridgeshire, EnglandPurpleSun8 years ago

Yeah, a similar thing has been brought up (and I think properly routed) for Default, so this would be good for Second as well. I won't add a category until there's definitely going to be a run, though. Don't want to leave an empty category hanging around for weeks. Would certainly be interesting to see the route for which side you pick on each sidequest the first time around.

Sorry about that. "Start game" is a little unclear - it's meant to be when the screen fades black, which is either when you start a new game without saving at File Select, after you choose "Yes" when overwriting a save file, or after you choose "Yes" when continuing without a memory card. Nano started the timer when choosing to overwrite a file (usually runners just start without saving), before the "Are you sure?" came up. Thanks for pointing that out! :)

Info is a little uncertain right now. The only test of FDS against SDS (and emu) has been on PAL, on a 30k, and anyone who knows about PS2s in speedrunning will know that 30k is a terrible representation of FDS. But with 30k as FDS, the results are (after ~2 minutes of in-game time): SDS, FDS, and ePSXe 2.0 have the same IGT to the second ePSXe 1.9 loses IGT time ePSXe 2.0 had the fastest storybook time (due to little lag), although FDS had the faster RTA time if you count the black screen into the loading screen Similar to those differences, ePSXe 1.9 was faster than SDS for storybook, but SDS was faster when adding the black screen.

Also, one other difference I found when testing was that PAL is faster IGT than both NTSC-U and C, and NTSC-C might be slightly slower than NTSC-U.

Here are the results as a table if that's a bit confusing http://puu.sh/sG1Tu/cbf2a0ee28.png

I'm not sure if we really want to go ahead with this quite yet, since, like I said, 30k FDS is bad - much rather a 70k test but my 70k doesn't want to play nice. But for now, ePSXe 2.0 is allowed (and 1.9 but since that's slower, why use it?), but PAL runs using IGT might be separated (although it doesn't seem right to do that, since there's no gameplay difference and what's fastest is fastest).

2002: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (PC version)

Cambridgeshire, EnglandPurpleSun8 years ago

It counts gameplay and cutscenes. It doesn't count paused time (including save game menus) and loading times. Like Slend said, exploiting pause isn't common but if it's done, there will be a penalty (pause buffering inputs is not exploiting IGT).

Cambridgeshire, EnglandPurpleSun8 years ago

For full-game runs (when PSP gets one), these two will be separated via subcategory, since PSP has major differences, including levels being completely removed (mainly vehicle levels like the Istanbul trilogy), and cutscene skips. For ILs, in the future they'll probably be separated due to gameplay differences (a few different gadgets, rappelling, the time between finishing an objective and a mid-game cutscene starting, less enemies, etc.), but for now, since there's not a huge scene, there's not much point in separating, since it would just be a load of subcategories with 1 or no runs in. Too much clutter. Another thing about not separating for ILs yet is that, because some levels aren't in the PSP version, making subcategories for All Levels would leave forever-empty boards, and adding subcategories for each level that is in both games would be a bit of a chore since, again, there aren't many runners.

Youtube has a simple cropping tool as well. On the odd occasion it won't save your edits, but it usually works fine.

Unfortunately, the route hasn't been shared, but you could ask Noishiru via Twitter. There are also a few scraps of notes on the SDA forum: https://forum.speeddemosarchive.com/post/bravely_defaultwhere_the_fairy_flies_36.html#bravely_defaultwhere_the_fairy_flies_36

As there's no percentage counter in the game, I'm not quite sure what 100% would be, and I know 100% for RPGs can be quite ambiguous since some people might want the large approach of max stats. I'm going to guess All Asterisks (I know a route has been partly made for that in the SDA forum thread), True Ending (or both endings), and defeating the Adventurer. Completing D's Journal and rebuilding Norende might be possible choices too.

In terms of just what the skip is, mine is the Wrong Warp in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets PS1. It's one of the easiest Wrong Warps, as all you need to do is pick a Remembrall up facing away from one wall, and open a gate and then go back through the gate. The fact that it's so easy to do is why I like it so much. In terms of enjoyment executing a skip, I'd say the Fast Fast Voldemort from HP1 PS1. It's a combination of Fast Voldemort, knocking down a pillar just as Voldemort starts moving so he skips an attack, and Pillar Spawn Manipulation, using the camera to respawn pillars to chain attacks. It's so satisfying when it works.

Comparison vid is private :P But this is interesting. Could you land just before the finish line in Storm Creek like that? Or does that make the game think you didn't complete the lap?

The Early 4-Eyes skip in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's/Sorcerer's Stone PS1 takes a whole minute to execute (mainly due to falling OoB for 30 seconds). There are three difficult parts: the initial jump OoB (which loses 10-15 seconds each failure), the OoB section, and the re-entry in bounds. The OoB part of it is done in complete darkness trying to find a precise spot to go back in bounds in such a way that you're falling from the ceiling. From there you have to move Harry to a ledge (horizontal movement is very slow whilst falling, making it all the more difficult), otherwise it's all over. Only one madman has attempted it in runs, and his current PB got it first try, so no-one sane wants to touch it.
