Ah heck, antique shops- it's been so long since I've been in one since the whole corona thing I almost forgot how cool they were. Always so cozy, and just so many things from times long gone.

Terrible for my wallet, but cool places nonetheless.

For sure. Capstan shanties are my favorite and really do serve the purpose they were made for- the pacing really is good for taking your mind of slow and steady work.

In general they have a good sense of quality to 'em, which I suppose they'd have to given the ones we have written down are all refined from years and years of improv. I'm sure you've got a lot of time at sea to work on the lyrics.

Now that's being gamer Speedrun1st

Now, I also just wanted to say that I used to play Fortnite all night. No sleep! But ever since SR.C told me to try Severed Steel for free, I am addicted. This game is a game. It has graphics. It has characters. Best of all it has a loot box mechanic to enhance my experience even more by adding another exciting chance based layer to the game! Two week ago I spend all my money becoming a pro Severed Steel runner. Now I live in a dumpster outside a McDonald’s with free WiFi. At night I sneak into the McDonald’s like my new raccoon dad, Stripey, taught me to do so I can charge my phone. Through the cracked screen I am still perpetually amazed by the graphics of this game... they look so real! Thank you @SpeedrunCom, you truly changed my life!

Yeah, not going to lie, the DMs are useful as it's at least a form of communication that every account is guaranteed to have (aside from newly made accounts for whatever reason). Some contact methods are just inefficient to use, and others are, well, twitter. Fixing those soon would be quite nice.

The forums definitely have some jank, but being able to infinitely quote is just a lasting oversight rearing it's head.

More than anything I'd like to get a bugfix for that error where the sense of community and understanding between the staff and users is gone, but at this point I ain't got high hopes for that.

Yeah, the general term I know this by is "cartridge tilting". It's effectively temporary corruption. A similar effect can also be achieved by overheating of hardware, something that you can trigger on the Atari 2600 by just resetting it enough.

Forms of external manipulation are usually disallowed for inconsistency and lack of verifiability; to what extent are you going to permit modifying the console? How are you going to verify these modifications? That and general fairness are just two of the reasons why the baseline for speedrunning is specifically original hardware.

Another big reason for this kind of stuff not being allowed is the damage to the hardware it can incur. While speedrunning is about trying to get the fastest time, it also has a strong relationship to retro gaming, of which the original hardware is no longer being made anymore. These sorts of tricks can damage the consoles or the game carts themselves, eventually destroying them and thus wasting a valuable piece of history. It's not limited to carts either, just look up the controversy about Battle For Bikini Bottom and the disc scratching. Don't get me wrong, the kind of stuff these methods can produce are fascinating, but I'd personally rather not see irreplaceable consoles and games destroyed for it.

As for controllers, well, many enter the graveyard thanks to speedrunners, but those are the acceptable sacrifices I suppose.

In the terms of aesthetics revolving around games, I'm hardly picky and like quite a lot. I grew up with a multitude of consoles now long old enough to drink, so older graphics and sound quality are to me a sort of art all on their own. There's a reason why my pfp is a pseudo OoT model I made. Despite barely playing the Gameboy when growing up, I really rather like it's graphics an limitations. Can't explain why, just do. I also just love old jank PC graphics, especially the old PC prerendered CG graphics. Look up Septerra Core to see the kind of stuff I mean.

I do run games on a CRT from the 90's, but that's just because it's the smallest TV I had that could fit in my limited space. I originally had it just for my Atari 2600, but it comes in handy for the Famicom as well. Although, some games do just look better on it if you ask me, even as late as the GCN.

Game soundtrack-wise, I'm a sucker for flutes, harps, and old instruments (see FF: Crystal Chronicles), but I've also got a weak spot in general for drawn out electric guitars (a la Pokemon Colosseum battle tracks or River City Girls- Combatant). Ain't got nothing against some good synth either- I mean, I've been listening to RCG's soundtrack for months and I'm not burnt on it yet.

If we're talking about traditional art and music, then my preferences there are also incredibly broad, to the point it's hard for me to really say. My particular favorite kind of traditional art is mountaineer crafts, scrimshaw, and the like. Rustic and simple, but effective- makes me wish I had a log cabin.

Music-wise, I listen to a lot of stuff, but it's rare for me to like anything past the early 80's, and when I do it's usually because I like the artist for their earlier works. I do have some modern guilty pleasures, but most days I listen to U2 or Steely Dan, other days it's Lightfoot or Allman Brothers, or it could be BeeGees, Elvis, and Orbison. And that's barely scratching the surface of the 30 playlist tabs I've got open.

And you know, sometimes I'm just listening to sea shanties, 20's Jazz, and modern renditions of B.C. era music with a bit of Mozart or Aligheri mixed in. Woweeblanket

Not funny I didn't laugh. Your joke is so bad I would have preferred the joke went over my head and you gave up re-telling me the joke. To be honest this is a horrid attempt at trying to get a laugh out of me. Not a chuckle, not a hehe, not even a subtle burst of air out of my esophagus. Science says before you laugh your brain preps your face muscles but I didn't even feel the slightest twitch. 0/10 this joke is so bad I cannot believe anyone legally allowed you to be creative at all. The amount of brain power you must have put into that joke has the potential to power every house on Earth. Get a personality and learn how to make jokes, read a book. I'm not saying this to be funny I genuinely mean it on how this is just bottom barrel embarrassment at comedy. You've single handedly killed humor and every comedic act on the planet. I'm so disappointed that society has failed as a whole in being able to teach you how to be funny. Honestly if I put in all my power and time to try and make your joke funny it would require Einstein himself to build a device to strap me into so I can be connected to the energy of a billion stars to do it, and even then all that joke would get from people is a subtle scuff. You're lucky I still have the slightest of empathy for you after telling that joke otherwise I would have committed every war crime in the book just to prevent you from attempting any humor ever again. We should put that joke in text books so future generations can be wary of becoming such an absolute comedic failure. Im disappointed, hurt, and outright offended that my precious time has been wasted in my brain understanding that joke. In the time that took I was planning on helping kids who have been orphaned, but because of that you've waisted my time explaining the obscene integrity of your terrible attempt at comedy. Now those kids are suffering without meals and there's nobody to blame but you. I hope you're happy with what you have done and I truly hope you can move on and learn from this piss poor attempt

Explains the little bass icon, I'd say.

Somewhere around 5th-6th grade, we had this weird class that was like, ascended Music class meant to lead up to Band, and since you didn't get to choose your electives that was something I ended up with. We played trumpet, and I was good enough to be recommended for the actual band. Of course, I was extremely socially anxious so I ran away from that as fast as I could. For whatever reason, my primary group of friends throughout middle school and high school were all band kids- I was the odd one out there.

I've tried violin, piano, mandolin, flute, and guitar over the years, but I've found that I have no talent in music whatsoever. I can read sheet music okay, but that's about it. I also greatly lack rhythm (despite constantly listening to music for most of my life), something I've been trying to improve of late through rhythm games. Mixed results so far, but I've not given up on it yet. Sometimes I also mess around with remixing midis, because I don't already have enough projects.

On the other hand, I knew a guy in high school who could play the piano like a dream, but it just wasn't his interest. The world is funny like that.

BOOK ONE: 1805

CHAPTER I

“Well, Prince, so Genoa and Lucca are now just family estates of the Buonapartes. But I warn you, if you don’t tell me that this means war, if you still try to defend the infamies and horrors perpetrated by that Antichrist—I really believe he is Antichrist—I will have nothing more to do with you and you are no longer my friend, no longer my ‘faithful slave,’ as you call yourself! But how do you do? I see I have frightened you—sit down and tell me all the news.”

It was in July, 1805, and the speaker was the well-known Anna Pávlovna Schérer, maid of honor and favorite of the Empress Márya Fëdorovna. With these words she greeted Prince Vasíli Kurágin, a man of high rank and importance, who was the first to arrive at her reception. Anna Pávlovna had had a cough for some days. She was, as she said, suffering from la grippe; grippe being then a new word in St. Petersburg, used only by the elite.

All her invitations without exception, written in French, and delivered by a scarlet-liveried footman that morning, ran as follows:

“If you have nothing better to do, Count (or Prince), and if the prospect of spending an evening with a poor invalid is not too terrible, I shall be very charmed to see you tonight between 7 and 10—Annette Schérer.”

I can’t stress this enough: when I say “this is the greatest post I’ve ever seen” I truly, honestly, and genuinely mean that. I know it gets said a lot as a hyperbole or whatever but I’m being 100% serious. I prostrate myself before its magnificence and I have to use my inhaler because I start to have a combined asthma/panic attack every single blessed time I think of its glory. I have never before in my life witnessed such an epic post in these forums.
