I think using a fanhack for English should be indicated as part of the Platform. As opposed to someone running the official Japanese release. Certainly one is faster than the other and fanhacks can cause differences in RNG.

Too bad I can't see what Deleted said. I also PMed but I think discussion should be public. I have three suggestions I hope can be addressed before I start recording anything:

  1. No longer allowing 1 round fights Can archive the category. Default is 2 rounds right. 1 round rewards luck versus consistency and isn't a thing in any fighting game I've played. Exception for Gals Fighters which has a ludicrous speed option where fast reflexes are rewarded and the strategy is distinct from 2 round fights.
  2. Allowing stat boosting scrolls Either separated from no scrolls runs or classified with an annotation such as how Mode is shown. They're a legitimate part of the game. Problem is I can't find a source how to unlock them or even what they do. I'm making a list and will post as a Guide.
  3. Combining all characters in one category But indicate with an annotation like Mode. It's kind of crazy just finding the 11 runs the counter says exist spread across [9x3 (Story 1) + 14x3 (Story 2)] x 2 [Options for Rounds]. In very popular fighting games, separating by character make sense but that is not the case here. Only ones used thus far are Akari, Kaede, Yuki and Lee.

I downloaded the VOD with TwitchDownloaderGUI since it freezes up on Twitch at 2:48.48 VOD timing and 2:41.06 in speedrun timing. Already had audio/video desync by that time.

From viewing the downloaded VOD (5.88 GB), here's what happens:

  1. At 49:06 VOD timing and 47:24 speedrun timing, there's an audio glitch and video is frozen for 5 seconds. You see the speedrun timer jump from 47:25 to about 47:30. Video then lags behind audio for about 5 seconds from this point onward. Very jarring to me at least.
  2. If you skip to 2:40:00 VOD timing and 2:37 speedrun timing, we're at the end of the 2nd battle of the semifinals. You see KEI's winning attack. Seems strange to block at all and waste time, but regardless, the music shuts off while sounds effects remain.
  3. The 2nd trip to the semifinals begins at 2:42:42 VOD timing and 2:41:00 speedrun timing. Sound is completely muted by 2:42:51 VOD timing and 2:41.09 speedrun timing where the VOD freezes again. Speedrun timer jumps to about 2:41:14 for another 5 missing seconds.
  4. Semifinals against KEI, COMET, NISHI and the finals against SHIN are played completely muted.

I didn't watch the whole 4 hours so there could be other video freezes. Just given the last 4 and arguably hardest battles are all muted, I think that's enough reason to reject the run. Had to be self-verified given it was the first submitted speedrun.

I absolutely hate it when people send in twitch vods instead of youtube videos. The viewing experience of a twitch vod is quite frankly just ass compared to actually a youtube video, so reviewing the submission is much more enjoyable.

Yeah it is! 30 sec ad to play a 5 minute run is cringe. There's a 4 hour Twitch video I'm trying to determine if they defeat one of the required enemies that's easy to miss at the end but I can't scroll to it. Video locks up skipping past 3 hours. So I guess I have to start there and do something else for a while.

Check this out @DBcade and @JakatoXtra

I did some screenshot work on Switch. I unlocked (Slash/Blue) Charlotte's cards. Then I tested the before and after with her Jumping Long Press A (B on Switch) Attack followed by her Forward + Long Press A (B on Switch) Attack. Yellow triangle drawn by the sword attacks. Is the easy cheese strat you see in runs.

The POWER UP (Attack) card boosts the Jumping attack damage 40% on Normal and 50% on Easy. That's huge. Card runs need to be separated versus just adding a variable/indicator. I didn't even test the DEFENCE UP card difference.

In the process I realized characters have different HP amounts. Seems your base damage is boosted in Easy by 30%.

Thanks for the improvement. I guess I took the longer way with clips.

I want to add Niconico for people who know some Japanese or else were banned or hate corporate Google and Amazon overlords. Niconico is one of the most popular websites in Japan. I've seen a playthrough from 2010 still on it and at least one submission here using it. There's a streaming app for it on the Japanese Switch eShop.

I paid $49.72 in 2020 before tax and it costs $50 now. It never cost $20 or anywhere near that. Super nice to have Composite or S-Video available and it supports NTSC, NTSC-J, every form of PAL including Brazilian PAL-M and SECAM if you the French Atari 2600. Also nice for not screwing up 240p. I've used for American SNES, Super Famicom, American and Japanese PS2 and Japanese Sega Saturn with no issues.

You don't have to use LiveSplit. I found VSDC Free Edition that does what I want. I drag the video file into a new project. I go to the frame I want the timer to start then add the timer. Can change color, font, location, display of hours/minutes/seconds/milliseconds or even frames. I have it run for the whole video at first. Then I scroll to where I want the counter to end and drag the counter box to that frame. Then add a text box with the same time.

Works with MKV files I create in OBS, which I like since they preserve the recording if you lose the video connection or power up to that point.

I have to video edit anyway so was faster than playing the whole video in OBS with an external timer. Exporting with free version of VSDC takes longer than the video length but it exports while idle and beeps when done. Nice to have control over integrating two speedruns into the same video side by side, transitioning from one screen into the next, clipping and trimming, changing the overlay after the fact, basic video editor stuff.

One tip is trim the video segments out you don't want first, then add the timer. Else if you drag the video to start on the new first frame, you lose the right timer start and end frames.

VSDC has another benefit. A new project set to 60 Hz takes my retro console 30 fps recordings from OBS and converts them back into 60 fps. Videos are in-sync with the 30 fps versions, just smoother. I export in AVI but there are other options. I have no connection to this software, just wanted to recommend it. First video editing I ever did.

Thanks, I didn't know that option existed. Would be nice to have a balance of views private with games followed public. Or an option to reset my views.

I didn't realize for a long time but you can view someone's profile then right there on the side are games followed with the number of visits to each game's page. I think there's a justification for site admins to see that or maybe be public if you mod the game. Inactive mod on top of few visits probably isn't what the community needs.

Else it's super creepy / stalker-y and I think we are all entitled to a basic level of privacy. Just seeing the games followed is one thing and helps build community and see what you have in common. Leave it at that.

I put on my headphones and at max volume I can hear the game audio to a decent level. Problem solved! I cannot hear your commentary on All Tournaments and Dark Tournament but obviously there is no requirement to comment on a run. Is there on the other runs. That's pretty cool you speak English and Japanese.

You know what, I like how you make yourself available. Not always the case with moderators.

90s kid Yu Yu Hakusho fan here, didn't know this game existed. Got a Japanese PS2 already.

Well, I wanted to watch what's out there and I can't hear anything in @DBcade's submissions. How can you verify it's not spliced or otherwise cheated if you can't hear anything? I'm not accusing him in the slightest, I just think there should be minimum standards for the video. Then people are less inclined to gain an unfair advantage and, to an outsider like me, the community looks better.

I wrote a strategy ideas thread in a forum post. No replies but the several hundred views were motivational. I subsequently went on to write more guides.

Anyway, the views column disappeared in 2022 or 2023. Can admins bring it back, at least for our own threads?

This happened in my day job where we inserted US data into a database that was located in India. The dates were stored in the database's India time 10.5 hours behind and thus putting about half the records 1 day behind.

Miscs being hard to find is deliberate. There is a game I play that has 1-2 hour runs but also single campaigns that take 3 minutes. The very short categories shouldn't be presented on the same level. There's also a mod option to make a category default which implies it is the most prestigious.

Where I agree with you and is the arrow not being obvious. It shouldn't be way over on the opposite side imo and should be more visible like highlighted or in a contrasting color. In other words, I'm saying that Miscs are too hard to find but the basic idea to reduce to their visibility makes sense to me.

I submitted a Gamer (highest) difficulty run with the Bad Ending that you get from losing the 1 round rival fight that then skips the Evil (Orochi) Iori / Evil Ryu fight. It's a legitimate ending and accessible. I unintentionally lost to rival Geese the first two attempts. Submitted under Normal, which a mod can edit and move to a new category.

Requesting two new categories:

  • SINGLE (GAMER) - GOOD ENDING
  • SINGLE (GAMER) - BAD ENGING

After putting in the work on Switch, I backtracked on floating the idea of separating unlockable characters and level 2 skills from the skill shop:

  1. I easily found two save states for all characters and moves unlocked on emulator.
  2. Unlocking characters is fast on Switch with no duplicate tiles + Rewind magic for story mode and Olympics manip.
  3. No one has submitted a real console run and my used game came with all characters and skills unlocked. How lucky! Haohmaru punch spam and Chun-Li kick spam can take you far without unlocking anything.

@eeffem's runs are set to private so should they be removed from the leaderboards? Isn't that why you would set YouTube videos to private? I'd like to see what I have to beat.

Other question, why are there two runs by the same runner with the same character on Any%? Different character I could understand. Can the slower @LiteralGrill and @JaneCrocker runs be removed?

Tracking ALI for the 70+ needed for the Sky Knights:

  1. Opinion Leader starts at 65 ALI
  2. Defeats Debonair with ICECLOUD to jump to 72 ALI as confirmed with the Auto Calculator under Resources
  3. Pulls Tower at Island Avalon to drop to 70
  4. Pulls another Tower at City of Malano to drop to 68
  5. Post-Diaspola editing shows 68 displayed
  6. Forgives Deneb to gain 5 ALI to rise to 73 (and loses 5 Reputation)
  7. Doesn't pull cards at liberation again until all 3 Sky Knights and Yushis are recruited

I think I meant to post in the RNG Research but I had them both open. My bad. I'm with Sheex that I noticed the repeat of the starting 7 cards on Saturn the first day I tested. That's way beyond how it goes on SNES and suggests a weaker RNG. I don't have an explanation of why ~78 frame apart produced the same cards 7 for 7 on Saturn. We know it's a bugged system that duplicate cards are common but impossible on SNES and only possible for World on PSX.

I haven't wrapped my head around Saturn but here's my SNES RNG understanding:

I looked at Dragondarch's spreadsheet in the Getting Started thread. Card List (Alpha) has what must be the RNG variable that loops 0-255 one tick per frame so a ~4.26 second cycle. All 256 seeds are laid out for a name of "!". Or I assume it is considering the speedruns. Also suggests the seeds were from emulator and more or less verified on real console. The exact timing might not the same but close enough to manip.

I have cart and flash cart but used emulator for better comparison. I waited extra long and named "!". First time, matched seed #150 except the 6th card was Judgment instead of Moon. Second time, matched seed #88 except bonus card was Devil instead of Temperance.

Third time I waited about the same time as the manip intended and got seed #23 exactly 7 cards for 7. I think the 0-255 landing is the most important factor and the total frame count or 256 cycles is a small factor. What about the name then?

I don't have TAS patience so I hooked up my Hori Super Famicom Fighting Commander. I clocked the turbo to 30 fps, which is the max possible if you think about: on-off-on-off. Middle settling spams the botton, top setting only when I hold the button. I used middle setting on A with no save file so defaults to New Game. Opinion Leader gets named eight 0's in a row.

Emulator isn't so smooth to use since the max USB polling is 1 kHz. Once per 1ms doesn't sync with once per frame so can register a button 1 frame late every now and then. Given ~60 frames per second, this happens. Anyway, about 8 Tarot cards sets are possible, and in every case, 1 card is different: either the 6th or 7th bonus card. I explain by being one or two 0-256 cycles ahead of the spreadsheet. What's interesting are the seed numbers: 124, 125, 247, 248, 249, 255 for the first six I recorded. Some repeats.

I think the name is strictly an offset to the starting seed. We know the hex values of each character. Not hard to prove that right or wrong.

Oh and none of the Saturn starting cards I looked up matched the SNES spreadsheet even 2 cards in a row.

My Saturn Sarjem Island runs unveiled a bug that's even buggier than the PlayStation's version: bonus card duplication.

PSX can pull World from the 6 questions and again from the bonus card. Odds are rare but seemingly more common than the 1 in 62 from World not being removed from the bonus card pool. Happened about once per Fireseal rage quit session. World isn't meta in speedrunning before the last two stages but does give about the highest Opinion Leader stat boosts to STR & INT and ALI & LUK reduction.

Buggy Saturn is where it's at! I have video proof of double Chariot, Hermit, Justice, Death, Devil, Tower, Star, Judgment and World and didn't record Empress. Looks like no cards are removed from the pool when you draw the bonus. Possible exception for Magician sitting first in memory. Odds would be 6/22 (27%) for a dupe event and it does occur around that often in reality.

I know just what you're thinking: Devil run starting with 2x Devil and Joker-ing a third on the way to give Mizal the thematic death she deserves for being the greatest threat in the Zeteginian Empire.

Saturn's RNG appears as weak as SFC/SNES' in that confirming Male/Female locks in all 7 starting cards. Krayzar demonstrated this on emulator and now we have console proof.
