I think the key is finding exploits and glitches to make the game faster.
I think the only weapon theoretically that we can not necessarily farm for, but get is the boomerang.
If we could skip the dagger entirely, then I would speed things up a lot.
I really think once we get the time closer to an hour then more people would want to get into this.
As is, runtime is too long for a relatively unknown game to the general population to attract more runners. Also doesn't make it any better that the actual game is rather expensive and on hardware the not a lot of people have.
I don't necessarily think once we find some things that the Japanese version would be that much faster if we're just talking about general difficulty with hit points and attack power.
The game is on my run list and I have a physical copy too. I'll try sometime before December to get a run in but no guarantees.
A few questions:
Due to load times, would playing the actual disk be slower in rta? I have the disk and have been playing around with routing a run.
I wonder with optimizations, could a run be done with no shops? Would this increase speed?
I mean golem and fire golem would suck, but it's possible

I've had luck with space Axl by hitting him 3 times after he exits the spaceship to get him to do defensive pattern every time.
Sorry about the delay. Life and stuff. To moderate, all you really have to do is just know the rules of the runs, make sure there's no cheating involved and verify the runs. Super helps if you are familiar with the game which in this case it sounds like you very much are.
