Traditionally speedruns have been done using Coco or N.Gin, or specifically "Acceleration" characters, and recently it's been discovered that "Fast" characters such as Dingo and Tiny are optimal for runs.

So it was unanimously decided that "Well Dingo is just faster for runs" for a while and no accurate comparison had been done. Anything from 5s, 10s or even 30s had been plucked from the sky to guess the actual timesave for using Fast over Accel so I ran some tests to look into this properly.

I tried to make it as accurate as I could, while keeping my own sanity in check. I took 7 completed attempts at each course without mistakes, then took an average of the 5 attempts, removing the fastest and slowest attempt. This isn't so much to demonstrate the absolute peak each character can achieve, but to instead look at the average course times.

Here's a summary of the average and fastest course times I recorded for all tracks you would see in a Warpless speedrun:

https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/367716591623733250/738447068250505246/unknown.png

The comparison on the right column is looking at the time Acceleration loses compared to Fast. Over the whole run, I came to the conclusion that Acceleration loses around 27-28s compared to Fast. Now obviously this isn't an exact number, and getting a completely accurate sample of course times would take a very long time.

I condensed the data further to look at the time difference for Hubs:

https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/367716591623733250/738448281352274001/unknown.png

Quite surprisingly, Fast saves over 9 seconds in Hub 4, which is almost all down to Hot Air Skyway and Oxide Station.

This does come with the argument of Fast characters being significantly more difficult, which I'd personally disagree with to an extent. The main problems come from Papu's Pyramids, Dragon Mines and Cortex Castle, which makes up 5 tracks in the run including bosses. These become hellish to drive using a Fast character.

However, on the flip side, Fast characters are far more consistent and easy to optimise on basic tracks, and a lot of tracks don't become more "difficult", instead just require a different approach, such as HAS and OS (imo).

So there you have it, feel free to post any questions about the data I used.

tl;dr Fast characters saves 27s in Warpless so you might as well use 'em!

These kinds of questions are best answered by asking the community directly, links in this thread:

I don't believe a lot of the TTers use this site very often so you'll likely get a quicker response that way

I believe the speedrun leaderboards exist as a temporary provision but the main focus is TTs. Don't want to take speedruns away from here but the new website is absolutely the place for TTs as this website doesn't quite accommodate.

When submitting a run, please take a look at the following classifications to ensure your submissions is accurate:

Fast Characters - Dingodile & Tiny

Acceleration Characters - Coco & N.Gin

Balanced Characters - Crash & Cortex

Slow Characters - Pura & Polar

Here's a handy chart detailing the exact stats for each character (the in-game stats are incorrect):

Most likely echoing what Tebt outlined here but the quality of a run isn't a deciding factor on whether it requires a leaderboard or not. For a leaderboard to exist there needs to be competition, or you might as well just keep a record of your own attempts. No one is stopping you running/submitting a game, but not everything needs to be made into a leaderboard.

Also TWoC already requires time from the mods to remove loads and make sure the run is valid, and for something like this it wouldn't be fair for them to have to validate additional categories that don't need to exist in the first place. Leaderboards don't just "exist" without people putting the time into maintaining them.

Unfortunately this is just NG+. Although you don't directly load into an existing file, you need it to exist on your memory card in the first place for this route to work. It is a shame since it's a cool discovery but yeah no can do.

For the record we haven't abused memory cards or saves in CTR before. We do create a save file, and load that file all inside the same run.

It's sort of common knowledge that PSP runs CTR faster than a PS1/PS2. However, what we weren't aware of was that PSP doesn't just load quicker than PS2 FDS, but it also runs games about 4% quicker than intended.

Here's some evidence for stats nerds (I'm using Joshimuz's and Pete's runs for comparison as they're currently the only ones on PSP):

http://i.imgur.com/sOybZjL.jpg

On here, we can see that IGT runs about 14-15s faster over the three tracks that I tested. On Josh's run in particular, 60 seconds RTA is actually 61.9s IGT.

RedHot's run and my run are both done on NTSC PS2s. To compare, on my run, 60 seconds RTA is 59.4s IGT.

There's also this neat cutscene comparison made by Pull that shows the differences:

So basically, what we're going to do is separate games that run on a disc, like PS1/PS2 (and we'll keep emulators here as well as they emulate a PS1 console), and runs that use PSN such as PSP or PSVita etc.

The main reason is to keep a healthy competition between runners. It's estimated that PSP saves about 2 minutes over a PS2 Any% Warpless run due to poor emulation, and as PSP is still official hardware, we don't want to simply ban it. Currently, we could see PSP runs reaching as low as a 48 minute run.

Feel free to post your thoughts here!

The Japenese version of CTR is faster on some Time Trials just because Penta doesn't have max stats on the NTSC-U version, but does on the J version. It's just not so good for full game speedruns.

As for PS1 Crash games, it's a little off topic but Crash 1 100% is the only category that's faster on J

discussione: Crash Team Racing
United KingdomNatty8 years ago

For Warpless, NTSC-J runs exactly like NTSC-U but you'll lose a lot of time to cutscenes. This basically sums up the differences: https://pastebin.com/gmHM9f3v

Also obviously no language glitch on the J version.

If you're interested in TTs, Penta Penguin has max stats on the J version like the PAL version.

This might help you understand where to jump from and such. I always aim to land at the base of the hill, as long as the track is loaded

I haven't seen that before but it looks as though you get a really late jump off the pillar. You can do a jump with all 4 wheels off the track in some places which gives you extra distance.

Best thing to do off the pillar is drift, even if you don't go for the second shortcut, it'll still give you a tighter racing line.

Were you using Emulator? PAL Emulator has a habit of crashing before entering Komodo Jo due to the fact that PAL CTR does not emulate properly (I don't know the details as to why). Your best choice is to stick with NTSC Emu and switch to PAL when/if you get console.

Hassle greatly weighs out supposed benefits.

Changing how every single Crash game (bar Crash 1) has been timed just for "few people thinking RTA is better" seems really idiotic. This isn't a case of what timing is "better", it's just too late to go changing something like this.

I honestly don't see RTA even having any benefits so it'd just be a big waste of time for mods to deal with, and then having to change the time of every run submitted to the boards for who knows how long until everyone realises that timing has changed.

Timing an intro cutscene adds what to the speedrun exactly?

I approach the second half like this. This angle and kind of aim to the part just before the yellow segment of the wall. A lot of it is down to timing though.

This has been a topic coming up in numerous debates recently, and it hasn't been stated anywhere what emulators are actually allowed for the Crash series.

This thread serves to inform those who are unsure and is not a place for discussion. If you feel there is an emulator that should be allowed but isn't listed then please start another thread.

PS1 emulators is where most (if not all) the controversy comes from. As FDS is allowed for PS1 games ran on a PS2, it has been noted that "Emu is always going to be slower than console". However, the whole aim of the emulator is to be accurate to the console that the games were originally meant to be run on, which is the PS1.

GBA and Nintendo DS emulators have not been heavily discussed, however to keep the boards conformed, please use those listed below.

PS1:

UPDATED RULES BELOW

GBA:

mGBA higan VBA

Nintendo DS:

DeSmuME melonDS

If your run uses an emulator not listed here then it will not be accepted. No WR is currently set on a banned emulator, and therefore is not a cause for concern. Again, please open a new thread if you would like to discuss this.

Final note, PS2 and GameCube emulators are not allowed. These are very inaccurate and your run will not be allowed on the boards.

Hey everyone.

I'm making a thread to see if there's any interest in anyone who would like a lift to get to Luton airport for their flight to Copenhagen.

Before I get into detail, the following are the flights that I will be taking:

GOING OUT From London (Luton)(LTN) to Copenhagen(CPH) Sat, 23 Jul 2016 Flight 411 Depart LTN at 1425 and arrive CPH at 1715

COMING BACK From Copenhagen(CPH) to London (Luton)(LTN) Sun, 31 Jul 2016 Flight 410 Depart CPH at 1740 and arrive LTN at 1830

I am going to be travelling from Shropshire to Loughborough (to pick up Tyzerra), and then back down to Luton. I can provide more specific travel details for any who are interested. I will stress that I am not willing to go too far out of my way to pick additional people up, so please ask if you're concerned.

The current journey is looking at taking 3-4 hours, but I will be setting off with plenty of spare time in case anything goes wrong.

I would like those interested to be willing to pay towards the journey, and from rough estimating is going to be around £35 per person (total of three people travelling). This is costing around £110 as parking is a lot more expensive than I had hoped.

If you're wondering why I'm not taking the train, well... that'll cost over £100 for me so why not have a road trip?

I am not really expecting many replies (if any at all) due to how specific this is, but better to put the message out in case it helps anyone out!

If you're interested then please either respond in this thread, or send me a message on Discord or Twitter. My Discord ID is Natty#8734 and my twitter handle is @nattyone720.

See you all in July!
