We're back again with another speedrun event, this time we're doing a bunch of different categories to spread out the prize pool a little and make it more accessible, especially to newcomers.

https://chopchopgames.dk/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/RalphSpeedrunGraphic-768x432.png

Categories are: ANY%

  1. $400
  2. $100
  3. $50

Individual Levels: Each of the 33 main levels has a $10 bounty for first place.

Deathless:

  • First 12 players to complete a full deathless run get $10 each.

MineRalph has gotten a huge update, with a bunch of level reworks + new speedrun features like:

  • Ingame Leaderboards for everything (Full Run, IL etc)
  • Timers, Ghosts, Automatic replays
  • Medals & Individual Best tracking

We have a small but dedicated runner community on our discord, and they helped us develop & test these features.

@Daravae Well.. Nobody has really asked that question before, and we're currently not even close to a situation where that would be an issue, since all the people who are actively running are active on our discord daily. But it's a fair point. We did take into account that if the "top score" is fake or unproven - then the score would be deleted, and the 2nd place would move up to first place.

The rules are posted on the webpage that I linked - we're going by ingame timers (such should be stated too on the MineRalph section? Or at least I hope I set it like that).

There are no rules for the Any% run in the category on SRC - It's just an any% run, the category on SRC & The Competition are two different entities.

I hope I answered all of your questions, please let me know if there's anything else!

EDIT: I took a look at the rules for Celeste and pasted some for the runs, I actually didnt know how much you could edit on the page (I'm a newbie at setting up SRC), hope it makes more sense now :p

@komrade yes you can definitely withhold / hide strats etc. There's no rules against that.

In terms of cheating, you can (or could) in earlier builds cheat the ingame highscore, some people had times of like 2min to complete the entire game. If your time is like that, we might ask earlier for proof, if it doesnt line up with the information we have at hand.

But you wont be required to share your run/strats with your competitiors - no.

@komrade You could do that yeah, however if we suspect cheating / Timer abuse, we will reach out and require to see the video, we have some systems in place to check and alert us.

@Liv In that event, the prize would move on to 2nd place, then 3rd place and so on, so far it hasnt been an issue though. The best runners are very active on our discord.

Hey folks!

Since we're huge fans of speedrunning, we're doing a $1000 speedrunning competition to celebrate the launch of MineRalph!

All you have to do is:

  1. Play MineRalph
  2. Submit a video of your best run online
  3. Stay #1 on the ingame highscore list

More info & rules on: https://mineralph.chopchopgames.dk/competition/

The competition runs until the 9th of September - where we will lock the leaderboards and find the winner!

If you have any questions or suggestions for the rules, let me know!

@drgrumble hmm. Yeah that might be an issue.

Do you not think the ingame timer itself would suffice in telling the time apart? like looking at the timer & comparing the end time with the time on the highscore list.

I like the idea about minimum resolution requirement and ingame audio, that's definitely going to make it a lot harder.

Any other ideas?

Hi!

I'm a gamedev about to release a platformer called MineRalph, and as part of the release, we're doing a speedrunning competition with a decent prizepool. In order to avoid cheating or breaking the game as much as possible, we've put together a ruleset to try and explain how we want the submissions to look like.

I'd love to get some feedback on if we're missing something obvious, if something could be worded better or if something is stupid/should be removed before we start going live with it!

Let me know what you think!

Having both timer options might be a good idea. Thanks for your input, definitely nice to get the prespective from players. We haven't completed all leves quite yet, which is why getting some insight and new perspectives for what is enjoyable is still very useful without remaking anything, but we did suspect that it would be a "different people, different answers" sort of thing.

Interesting, we had a discussion internally in regards to timers, whether it should be a "true" timer that just keeps on going through loading and cutscenes, or whether to only count gameplay time. Arguments being like you said, fairer across all specs, and the counter argument being a true timer matches the timer a player would set up manually better.

Hey speedrun.com

I am a developer of a 2D physics platformer and have a few questions in regards to features that speedrunners like in their games.

I enjoy wathing runs, but never dappled in speedrunning myself, which is why I am reaching out, as our small team is making a game that we think could be interesting for speedrunners.

Questions about tracking:

  • Do you guys care about ingame timers -For the full run, for parts of a run? Or do you just always use your own timers outside of the game anyways?
  • I have noticed that when a streamer does a run, they often have a time tracker besides them showing their current time relative to a previous or their best run. If I were to save you the hazzle of setting up code sniffers, what kind of information o you want, just .txt files for major clearing points, per level? You want ingame time in those?
  • In terms of run validation, is it usually a issue? Would you want small things like in meatboy for example where there is a frame cycle you can track to combat video splicing. Or is that a non-issue, especially for a small title anyways?

Questions about gameplay: This a slitghly broader question, but what do you guys enjoy most in speedruns:?

  • The discovery of new routes, so a broad game with lots of alternative ways of getting to the goal (like Mario odyssey before it gets "figured out")
  • Skill and execution in a linear experience, so more like super meat boy, where the execution of each level is what matters and new tricks are of limited scope.
  • Maybe something else entirely?

Our team would be very grateful for any kind of feedback or maybe even further insight we might have missed, that could help us make a better speedrunning experience.

The intentions of this post is mostly for getting general insight, but if anyone is interested in giving concrete feedback or want to try a demo out, you can find demo and discord on https://chopchopgames.itch.io/mineralph
