Hi and well, pro and cons of IGT I could think of would be:
- load times don´t matter
- less convenient to calculate
- tricks like falling off bike before exit to get end of race screen faster will suddenly become a time loss (-) time for menuing is not considered (although here not as big of a deal compared to career mode where you can buy bikes) (-) you can pause your game, go grab a sandwich and then continue and time would be same for someone who didn´t do it even though you in reality are much slower (hard to detect if someone really cheats anyway though)
So yeah.. I´m not convinced that IGT is really the best timing method for a full-game category and there isn´t really any urgent necessity to make changes now.
It looks good, nice find. But does it work with 20 fps?
Tbh I think it is ok how it is, using RTA is more convenient and makes more sense since menuing is also part of this game (unless you try to set up a track record). Some of the versions had different bikes and I don´t know if equal conditions can be provided if you just unify them into one. And the competition, well there is none.. the last run is months ago and it is unlikely that it will explode now. But you could help it by just setting a time on the board. Don´t be shy. ;)
@LazySkillet There is a specific topic here in the forums for the N64 glitches and skips and we also have a discord channel where we talk about the game and other stuff. @Jesse_Lee and @Brendon_Meares are the N64 runners and probably can help you.
No ground breaking differences were noticed so far, all glitches should be also possible on Steam and GOG too. The current full-game no glitches WR was played on Steam.
Hmm what patch do you mean and what version do you run? I have it as retail and GOG version and all glitches can be performed there. You can also check ingame with pressing "f10" then typing "version": Most people (if not all) played the "Jan 28 2000, 07:53:27 Release".
I thought about possible routes to complete the "Big Game Mode" as fast as possible and came up with these two ways.
Pick Cydney as character, since she has the women speed bonus on some bikes and the most starting cash ($1000). Note you always get additionaly half the value of your current bike when you buy a new one.
First, win 3 races (+ $3000) so you will have a total of ($5748) available and buy the "Rat" (- $5489 = $259). Then..
Route A
- Win next 7 races (rest of lv1 and all lv2 races = +$12000) and buy the "Vampiro" ($15003 - $13796 = $1207)
- Win next 8 races (lv3 and three lv4 races = +$27000) and buy the "Assassino" ($35105 - $34888 = $217)
- Win next 5 races (rest lv4 and three lv5 = +$23000) and buy "Vipera" ($40661 - $40000 = $661) and finish final 2 races
Route B
- Win next 9 races (lv1, lv2 and two lv3 races = +$18000) and buy the "Raven" ($21003 - $18999 = $2004)
- Win next 8 races (lv3 + all lv4 = +$29000) and buy the "Vipera" ($40503 - $40000 = $503) and finish lv5
Its not particularly easy to win a lv3 race with the "Rat" or a lv4 race with a "Vampiro" so one could buy a worse bike than listed as safety strat, but it should equal a significant time loss. Time estimates for both routes were about even in my calculations.
In @4enki s attempt today there was some unclarity in the "King Sols Mines" level wether going to get the blue gem early without activating the cutscene that is supposed to unlock this area is allowed or not. There is also a similiar thing with the green gem which causes some rendering glitches.
I think since it is a "glitchless" run that should try to glitch as little things as possible and complete things as "intended" as possible, this should not be allowed. One might argue about the small skips like in Babylon or Meroe where you can skip a shimmy section or the Pudovkin level with the crane hook. But the difference is that unlike there you do not access "intendedly locked areas" which cause glitches and do not skip using a key item. So I added this one under "Minor Glitches".
How did you get there, I remember trying it dozens of time without success. Did you test if you need certain conditions, like for example getting the watch or kill hyenas first? I figure it probably should not work nevertheless, but still worth the try cause the cutscene is somehow long. x)
@HeilanMo I agree, you can also do the same thing in Teotihuacan by jumping down to the mirror at the end, avoiding taking damage or dying. And even at the statues place you can jump do the same trick. So placing items while rolling/jumping should not be allowed, while placing items while running like in Palawan Lagoon at the places you can dig out should be fine imo because you don´t glitch anything.
Edit: Points 2.) and 4.) in the glitch catalogue updated.
1.) I made a small "research" and found all the platforms where this game was published for: Saturn, PC, PS, SegaCD and 3DO with the 3D0 being the first published in 1994.
2.) All of them appear to have the same modes, but I seperated each platform as subcategory because they might have some differences like loading times or bikes.
3.) For the moment I left two categories (Level 1 and Career mode). Other Levels might be added later if someone wants. Also limited the Level 1 category to Thrash Mode only, because of the reasons stated in the questions topic.
4.) Added IL board for best track times in Level 5 for each platform, it goes by ingame time.
Does everybody of the runners agree with these changes or are there other suggestions?
At the moment nothing is set in stone, but it probably is best to keep the Level x categories for thrash mode. Otherwise it would be in first level cydney -> buying killer rat after 3 races and finish rest with it and for other potential level 2,3,4,5 categories it would be just the diablo bike, kinda boring no? So suggestion is to have the Level x categories in Thrash mode and career aka Big Game Mode as seperate full-game category, while leaving each track for the IL-board (there diablo vipera bike will be used anyway since it is fastest).
For "Level 1" category:
- chose "Thrash Mode" and the timing as you have it Maybe later if needed you could create additional categories for Level 2, 3 and etc.
"Beat Big Game Mode" should be another category, that is the career mode:
- run starts when you start first track in Level 1 in Big Game mode
- run ends when you finish last race in Level 5
There need to be probably individual level board for each track (level 5) (City, Peninsula, Pacific, Nevada, Valley):
- ingame time counts
You can do subcategories for each different platform, otherwise it is unfair if you run on PS loading time is significant. Also idk if PS or other versions have career mode.
OK, resubmitted it now. About categories, rules need to be specified more:
- what mode allowed (level 1 can be very different in career mode than thrash mode)
- ILs for each track (city, nevada.. pacific highway) and only level 5 or each
- seperate platforms or not
I submitted some run for PC version and wait for verification: https://www.dropbox.com/s/fsn1l300tvmtqws/RR_lvl1_15_52.avi?dl=0
The different platforms should be probably seperated, the loading times on PS for example take forever. x)
@Liv I won´t bother but I find it odd that a guy who hasn´t contributed anything to the game (neither running it nor participating on the forums) can simply get super mod rights gifted and then change moderation at his whim.. especially considering that @DeadShot was pretty much inactive for over a year before he suddenly made those changes and didn´t even communicate beforehand.
Is there a particular reason why I was removed as regular mod for https://www.speedrun.com/Commandos_Behind_Enemy_Lines ( I wasn´t inactive) and some other random guy put in as supermod instead? Could you check that please.
