Well we wanted to accommodate all of that originally but that is too much clutter apparently. This would be a compromise that solves peoples desire to separate HD and SD, while still minimising clutter. Not what was originally wanted, but certainly somewhere in the middle. I don't like the idea of separating the game entirely - just my preference, don't know what others think.
Personally I think this is a fine solution https://imgur.com/vaGGg2a
It's barely a change from what we have now it would just be separated on one extra level.
While I appreciate the idea, I feel like that is way more hassle than simply separating this board into HD and SD. The separation within those groups (i.e. console and emu) is perhaps much less important for now. Also, can you even transfer all the existing runs to a completely new game?
Hi uhTrance. Thanks for getting back so quickly. On the mod front I agree; to be clear, this is not a push to get myself power - which I know you didn't suggest - but I wanted to make that clear because a few people backed me on this and, while I appreciate it guys, that was certainly not what this thread was about.
Also, this thread was not meant to be an echo chamber - if anyone feels the boards are fine as-is then this is a place to say that. On that, hoobie, please don't come into my stream and bring up stuff that can be posted here. I appreciate you are clearly friends with Trance and share his views, but that is just poor etiquette in my opinion. Again, the point of this thread was a discussion for both sides of the argument - opposing opinions to my own are welcome.
To your point though, there are clearly more than four people in this community, and as I stated the numbers are irrelevant. My outlook is that communities should make decisions as a community, regardless of size and definitely regardless of 'well runner X is better than you so their opinion is more valid'. This is just a childish school yard way of looking at things in my view.
I think someone mentioned clutter? I have to say my raging OCD does yearn for a clutter-free setup but I don't feel that it is such a big deal. Games like REHD have somewhat cluttered boards and they work just fine.
Again, I am for democracy and community decisions. If that's not possible then I don't think I want to remain part of it. I think this thread is worth reading; part 3 specifically https://www.speedrun.com/The_Site/thread/qkvjz
Interesting. I’m sure someone in discord said they have that version, although I don’t think they run the game yet so not sure much reliable testing would be incoming anytime soon.
As for PS3 emu becoming more a accessible, you’re probably right, but for now the majority of people I have spoken to are struggling to run it and certainly cannot run it and stream simultaneously. I feel like we could end up in a position where ‘get a better setup if you want to be competitive’ becomes the new ‘make a Japanese PSN account’ - most saw the latter as unreasonable, the former is frankly ridiculous imo.
We also need to accept that change is a thing; how long ago was it when people here were adamant that emulator runs were cheap and not genuine records or whatever it was? Now the game is being pushed to new limits on an emu.
Hi all.
I have decided to put this into its own thread rather than continuing threads started several years ago. I think it is time to re-open discussions about the categorisation of the leader boards for this game in the wake of the recent Door Skip mod and the rise of Emulator use. I appreciate that this has been a touchy subject in the past, and that there were mixed opinions on whether a re-shuffle was required. Obviously, the nuances of this game and it's many versions present problems, but I feel that we could reach a sensible solution - perhaps a good idea would be to bring together a number of suggestions (inc. 'keep things the same') and put it to a vote.
The thing is that is now evident that the fastest way to run this game is PS3 Emulator, but discussions in Discord have made it clear that a lot of interested runners simply do not have the setup to make this work for them. A healthy solution is to make the GC emulator a more attractive prospect; currently, it is not due to it's inherent time loss compared to the PS3 version. Of course, this also applies to the various differences in console versions. The consensus on that front is that it may be worth grouping together certain versions (i.e. PS2 and GC) but this can be discussed.
A community member has very kindly mocked up a test page to give people an idea of what a change might look like: https://www.speedrun.com/cvx_test#Any Again, what exactly falls under 'HD console' or 'SD console' would be discussed.
With all that said I think it is worth addressing some of the potential backlash, at least based on what has come before now. 'Filtering' is not a solution that appeals to the majority of people who look to a board and hope to compete; I appreciate it is there for a reason, but the fact is that this has turned people away from playing this game. Also, people may have a problem with alleged free WR hunters. While I feel like this isn't a genuine issue, if anyone feels strongly against this then I suggest that they either get over it or submit times to those boards themselves.
This is not about levelling playing fields, WRs, or any of that. I just want to see this game that we all love become more active because, frankly, it's been a graveyard for the past 3/4 years. I would also point out that whatever your feelings are towards gaming/speedrunning, forums like this should be about community, sharing ideas, making friendships. We should look to bring more people in by being open to new suggestions and ideas.
My second issue to raise is the lack of mod activity. Carcinogen is no longer a mod here I notice, and itsmiahere, TheMixedHerb, and sshplur have not been online for 8 months, 3, and 4 years respectively. I don't think the introduction of a couple new mods is a bad idea - I will offer my services if that's appropriate, and encourage anyone else interested to please make it known. I should point out that this is not a coup, currently active mods are doing a great job.
Anyway that's all I have to say for now. Let's try to keep this civil; we are all adults here.

PS. I have discussed some of the ideas here at length with people in private and in discord channels; however, I do not speak for anyone but myself. I encourage people to have their own say here if possible. Thanks
Right. So I have spoken to a number of people who wish to run this game but are struggling with the PS3 emu as it is so CPU heavy. Perhaps the time is ripe to re-open the discussion of board separation? The GC emu is a much better alternative for a lot of people, but they simply do not wish to run a version that is by default significantly slower. This game has been dead in the water for way too long, this could be an opportunity to bring in more active players.
Interesting. So it seems the PS3 emu is now the fastest way to play this game?
Ok I have found a work around - I have just had to run it windowed and have it open on my second monitor by default. Then I can just capture that monitor. Not ideal so any help would still be appreciated! Thanks
Hi - I have the PC version of this game but OBS refuses to recognise it. Anyone else had this issue? How are you guys running and capturing the game? Thanks
I applied the REbirth patch and have graphical issues which are solved using dgVoodoo - as explained on Rebirth website - but I get random crashes throughout the game. Gemini did say this is a possibility, so it seems I have no way around this. I was wondering if I have any other options? An alternative patch that was used pre-REbirth perhaps?
*Edit: Never mind - I have dug out an old laptop and it seems to be working better on that.
Good man. Thanks!
It’s quite telling that I just assumed I was that shit LUL
Not sure if its just me, but a heads up - the timer doesn't pause during door loads in the No Weapon category with Mudkicker's auto splits. Works fine for Any% and Best Ending. Ran it last night and was 20 mins behind my usual pace and couldn't understand why XD
@case015 It would not start up for me with the standard DDraw.dll file, but does if I replace that with Gemini's re_DDraw.dll (from his classic REbirth work). The issue I am currently having is that the game will not run windowed with dgVoodoo despite having chosen that option during config setup.
Edit: DXWnd allowed me to play windowed
Cool I’ll check those out. Thanks guys
I did some testing on the route out of Island 2 after the Albinoid fight. For me, heading to the 2F instead of the basement saves ~5 seconds. Not very significant at my level, but may be of interest if anyone is looking to shave some seconds - of course it means giving up the shotgun as a potential backup, but personally I've never had to use it.
