Update on the subject! The Main Board Marathon leaderboard for SM64 (as well as other 3D Mario games) can be found in the category extension of the Multi Mario Games community SRC website. In the last few hours, three times have been added : I'm in 3rd, Xein is 2nd and Oknem is 1st.

Cool! I didn't know about Main Board Marathons. That would be a better name I think. In that case hopefully the main categories stay the same over time.

Adding 31 and 50 stars may be pushing far the already masochistic nature of this speedrun. I'd see it as a one-time personal challenge. Maybe a Historical category run, removing the 120 stars to include only the Any% evolution : 70 -> 50 -> 31 -> 16 -> 1 -> 0

This week also, Cheese did a 16 + 70 + 120 stars for charity. Crazy coincidence, and also pretty cool!

Here's a little thought experiment I had.

120 stars + 70 stars + 16 stars + 1 star + 0 stars makes for a total of 207.5 stars. Now I hear you say "a star is a star, you can't say it's only half", but for the sake of this topic, let's say that 0.5 is to include 0 stars in the count.

Once I get to learning 120 stars (damn those 100 coin routes), I was thinking of doing some sort of All Main Categories % run, where each categories requirements have to be met back to back. The rules are, complete the game once for each main category : start from a new file, do a 0 stars run, beat Bowser and collect final star, then reset to a new file, rinse and repeat for 1, 16, 70... All five categories completed in a row, in any order, for a single total RTA time.

So far, my PBs suggest I could get sub 4-hour, but I'd definitely still need to improve my long categories. I was wondering if any top runner had ever done this before? Dowsky is the only one I see on the website who has submitted top times for all categories. His sum of PBs is around a 2 hours 58 minutes. Imagine how crazy doing a sub 3 hours would be! Weegee also comes to mind since he only lacks a 0 stars run time. Starting with around 15 minutes to do both decent 0 and 1 star runs, and by combining a 1h40 120 stars, 48-min 70 stars, and 16-min 16 stars, there would be 1 minute to spare to get a sub 3-hour time.

I know it might sound dumb. Almost like asking someone to sprint a 100m, then run a 400m, a 5km, and end it with a half-marathon and a full marathon, all at once. Probably not worth a category extension, even though some of them are already pretty dumb, but I'd be really interested to see how the most well-rounded speedrunners would perform. Someone who is both insane in short categories and has the endurance for long categories, able to do it all in one continuous run.
