Hi all! I made a quick tutorial for ALF as it was requested recently. It goes over just a beginner route and eliminates a lot of the death warps (Cat Strats), but the more comfortable you get with the game, the more risky you can do things.
If there are any questions that the video didn't answer (or if there are any questions that the video caused), let me know and I'll try to explain. I sorta did it by the seat of my pants.
EDIT: It was noted that the bats move a bit differently on emulator than they do on some consoles, so you may have to Salami Jump the first bat on the first platform. There was some information released about this previously. If I (or anyone else) can find it, we will post it.
Hey all. I noticed there were options to list a game under SNES Classic, NES Classic, PS Classic, and even NG Mini, but where is the Genesis Mini located when editing a game to contain that as one of the playable options? For that matter, even TG16 Mini is nowhere to be seen either.
Am I just not seeing it?
I just started playing this game and am looking to pick it up for speed. Unlike the original Langrisser/Warsong, I noticed the branching paths and lack of permadeath in most situations.
Are the leaderboards going to have separate sections for what route is taken? I noticed that (so far) for Langrisser 1 that there are at least 7 paths (A-G), but I still haven't finished it, so there may be more. It will be fun to figure out which path is the fastest to go, however.
Hey all. I am wondering if anyone here knows of exactly how some of the mechanics work in this game (damage formula mostly and what the real difference is between swords and their special attacks).
The only thing I really could tell so far by looking at some of the RAM values (theorizing anyway) is that each enemy has the same amount of HP (255 from what I can tell) and you deal damage to that enemy based on the number of LS you have minus a defense value of the enemy. When that enemy reaches a certain threshold (I've had it die before that number reaches 0, so I am not sure where it is), it dies.
I also noticed that a fully charged Thunder Sword deals more damage than a fully charged Gaia Sword (about maybe 1/2 or 2/3 the damage of Thunder).
Other than that, I don't know the ratio of LS to Damage. I don't know if it is an exact 1-to-1, but knowing some of the details could aid in LS routing.
... but now do I pick up the dog in the first village? I see it getting picked up in the speedruns to throw onto the statue for an easy lifestock, but every time I interact with it, I talk to it.
Upon watching the 3 current runs on the boards (with, thankfully one for each console after seeing mine on the Switch), I can definitely see a huge difference in load times and certain aesthetics (mostly, in the PC and PS4 versions you can see the level below you while in the XB1 and Switch versions you just see stars).
Fastest: PC Fast: PS4 Good: XB1 SLOW AS BALLS: Switch
When I saw the PC load the game in under 5 seconds compared to between 30-40 seconds on the Switch, I knew that these games are not created equal. The framerate also seems slower at times on the Switch and there is noticable lag at times. Hopefully something will be done about load times in the future.
Back in 2016 I ran 120k Population as a category but SRC didn't have a leaderboard a that time. I tried to get one created but it never came to be.
I chose 120k because that is essentially when you get the final rewards for the game. I was probably slower than death here, but I think it's a fun category.
There's my old video if anyone is interested. It was using the Funds glitch (which may or may not be valid), but still was interesting to do.
I know it plays a bit of a role in PSO 1&2, but I've always wondered in Ep. III if it has any impact at all and if it affects the run in any other way.
Any plans to add the Nintendo Switch version so that a run can be submitted using that platform?
Hey there, quick question:
Is the Continue Option/Code allowed to resume a run after a loss, or is it considered a RIP run after a loss?
The question has been brought up as the category is quite a bit longer and the fact that there is already a segmented run on there.
Is this something we want to continue to do for a glitchless run of the game? I know other games and categories such as FFX Nemesis are still done single-segmented iirc, but in this community, which direction do we want to go?
With the newest revelation thanks to mor_mot on the Shadowblade glitch, the way we look at stats have changed.
mor_mot discovered that stats (with the exception of HP/TP) do not change when a character levels up until a character's equipment is checked, their status screen is seen (?), or the Order command is used to change party order. This is used so that the Shadowblade strats can be used late into the game.
That being said, whether you use Shadowblade strats or not, this holds true for every character. When a character levels, if you do not do one of the previously mentioned menu commands, you are losing out on valuable stats that could possibly RIP a run, especially Agility and Mental (which affect Defense and MDefense respectively).
So when you're in a run, just do yourself a favor and give each character a quick look over or change their order.

I probably should post this here for anybody interested, but there is a discord channel for all things Phantasy Star speedrun related.
I am not sure if PSO has its own discord (if it does, then disregard this message and/or delete it), but anybody wishing to discuss this game and/or other Phantasy Star games are more than welcome to use the Phantasy Star Speedrunning discord channel.
I don't know how many people could use this, but here is a tutorial on the Genesis version of Ys III
This may already be known, but in case it isn't, Cancelling not only removes all buffs your characters get from Barrier, Deban, Saner, Shift, Vision, etc., but it ALSO removes any elemental defense benefits you would get from items like the Plasma Field. This did happen in Bich's 2nd place run but I don't know if anybody noticed, but after hunting in the Phantasy Star Cave, somebody did notice this (though he hacked a lot of the game). I can confirm that this does happen in vanilla PSIV as well.
It shouldn't change the strategy at all since Kyra will still get Reflect Shield and Plasma Field, but it is something worth noting.
Taking time in the middle of a stream to document this.
If you equip somebody with an item after using the Antidote Glitch, there is a possibility to cause the game to freeze.
If you use the Item Duplication Glitch to USE the item instead of GIVE the item, the game will also freeze.
I know that some RPGs have short categories like Zio% or Paladin% in FF4, but it has been brought up for a couple of short categories that would be more along the time for racing than anything else.
It was brought to my attention that some people want to race a Glitchless North Bridge category, which takes about 1 hour and time stops after Darum goes boom after killing Teim. I bring this up to give people who want to possible race this game an opportunity to do so without the need to learn the complex glitching of this game, or just a short goal category for those with limited time. Granted I know this still takes more time than the any% route, not everybody is going to want to take the time to learn the series of glitches needed to finish the game.
I don't think it would hurt anything and somebody has already run the Glitchless North Bridge category. I told him I would submit the idea to the leaderboard.
He also mentioned a Glitchless Neifirst% category, which I weary of myself since that is a much longer run than even a 100% run. I think just a Neifirst% would be a nice, short category that involves only a small handful of glitching.
What does everyone think?
