Don't listen to them. Wii's default output is red-white-yellow, so unless you bought a component cable for your Wii, the best bang for your buck is going to be the gv-usb2. It's a quarter of the price of an Elgato game caputre HD. Works just fine on Windows 10. Wii doesn't natively output any higher than 480p so there's no reason to blow a bunch of money on an HD capture card if that's all you're using it for.

Who are you, exactly?

Just to make sure I've got this right: -You don't run this game -You want people who do run this game to accomplish a thing -You want them to do so by a certain deadline -There is no reward.

If all this is correct, I have two questions of my own: -What makes you think SMS runners aren't already trying their hardest to beat the current world record? -Do you honestly think this deadline is contributing to the effort?

No one ever said this game was easy. The guides aren't there to immediately make you a grandmaster, they're to get you started.

If your average person could get all these tricks on the first try, it would not be this highly regarded as a speed game.

You're going to run into that same problem with NTSC-J though. Just get a screwdriver with the N64 security bit, they're not expensive.

Edit: literally just googled it, and found you one for $10 that ships worldwide for free

Did you include in the recording Toadette giving you the World Peace achievement?

yes. People avoid quitting because it saves time, not because it invalidates your run. It's essentially the same as if you'd game-overed, and it would be a dickmove to not accept runs where the player got a game over.

If people wanted to run this, they would have already. We don't need a bunch of empty categories sitting around waiting to be run. If you think it's a good idea, do a run of it yourself and show everyone how much fun you had. And if you don't even want to run it, why would anyone else want to?

And even if we ¤did¤ want new category ideas (make no mistake, we don't), Galaxy 1 242 has no place in a 7-million-hour-long marathon. Galaxy 1 doesn't have 242 stars in it. It has 121 stars that you can get credit for a second time. If someone's going to sit down and spend 45 hours playing mario games, the last thing they're gonna want to do is play one of them twice in a row

Because 100%ing the same game twice in a row adds literally nothing to the marathon.

If you want a decent capture card, your best bet is probably the AverMedia LGP. I currently use Elgato Game Capture HD (original, not 60), and it's pretty decent, but when I've used other people's LGP I've definitely preferred it overall. Also I'm not entirely sure but I'm under the impression that the original Game Capture HD is no longer being made so you'd have to get one used if you went that route.

The hit boxes on that bridge are really wonky and stunt your jump height, so a single roll of your mouse wheel can turn into like 5 jumps instead of just one. It makes for ridiculously efficient ABHs. At least, that's my understanding. I do that strat in runs, I've just never seen it happen that optimally.

For alerts about "Your PB has been beaten", it ought to be only when someone passes you, not simply any run that's faster than yours. It doesn't do you much good to find out that someone who was already faster than you is still faster.

Actually, Vorago, that's not quite true. The GS code for no music conserves lag (or at least, it says it does. I haven't personally counted the dropped frames, but when I use it, the lag feels the same).

That was ridiculously fast and ridiculously awesome. As if the previous update wasn't enough of a game-changer, this is near perfect.

It's literally just muscle memory. As long as you're throwing from roughly the same spot and aiming for the same bomb each time, there's nothing more to know except that you need to do it a million times.

I would nominate Kojlax if he's up for it. In my limited interactions with the Portal community he's always been incredibly helpful and knowledgeable.

I'm looking at that list of current mods and I'm honestly astounded by some of these. Like, how did Zypeh even end up modded? Is there a story behind that one? I don't want to come down on anyone too harshly, but holy crap.

In case it hasn't been reported yet, the "Extra Variables" section when editing a game looks like this:

You're essentially asking mods to make a category containing no runs, that might continue to never have runs. If you plan to run it, you can run it without a leaderboard. If other people are interested, get them to record runs so that you can prove that it merits a leaderboard. But the mods aren't about to make a leaderboard for a category containing one person.

And leaderboard aside, if you want this category to exist, YOU have to do the legwork. YOU have to route it. YOU have to demonstrate that it's worth running. Right now, asking for a leaderboard for a category with zero runners is really putting the cart before the horse.

Also, what Dalton said. If you want to make a category that bans the use of something, you accept ALL consequences. If categories can have whatever exceptions are convenient, it defeats the purpose of making that category. When max% hoverless was made, it wasn't "hoverless except for Noki 4/8 because we want those blue coins and that makes it okay". The category is hoverless and so the four blue coins remain impossible, because when you make a rule, you have to stick to it.
