Hi
Just wondering, I submitted my segmented run couple months ago here and now it's gone since the category no longer exists. Why is that?
I forgot to mention I have found a way to completely workaround the event respawn RNG. Basically, everytime you load your career or profile a certain number of events are randomly spawned on the map from some kind of pool, so if you know the exact positions of all events, you can just keep reloading the game till you get it spawned. This usually happens on 1-3rd attempt and the reload trick itself takes about 6 seconds to do. This should easily save at least 15 minutes over my previous run as I can ignore most of the circuits.
It also means there is probably no way this game can be speedrun segmented, because the continuity can't be verified - you could simply use newly unlocked upgrades without anyone knowing about it. There's also not much point doing so, because it would be just a bit faster - maybe half an hour.
Ah, ok. I only finished MW once, so I didn't know.
Well, that would be 100% game completion, not 100% Career mode. Do you know if career has some sort of option to display progress like in U2?
I made it a condition that IGT can only be used without restarts, otherwise RTA will be used. IGT is still the default timer. Not sure how speedrun.com will handle that :) I just think that one-sitting is a bit too harsh for 4 hours long runs.
OR we could set up a different category - good old single-segment.
The question is if it's not too hard to complete all challenges in just one attempt. I don't know how long all the challenges takes to complete.
I would probably use both timers for Any% run and IGT for IL runs. IGT only can't be used, because you could basically "cheat" by restarting any challenge as many times you want to get the best IGT, UNLESS we specify that you can't use restarts.
PM system doesn't work yet.
You don't have to use streaming software in order to record your run. Fraps is fine.
Yeah, segmented run would be probably better, otherwise you'll be very frustrated with police RNG. Just make sure it can be verified, because for example I've just recently discovered that Underground 2 cannot be done segmented, because everytime you quit the game or just switch to another profile, the events respawn in different locations.
JessicaSix: You should probably write the rules on the page and SPECIFY at which point the timer should start/end, what you can do and what can't, etc. I would do it myself, but I haven't played the game in 10 years.
Thanks, but it's still not fixed :)
Now it shows "Mode" four times even though I set specific category for each mode. Maybe the system doesn't like duplicate variable names?
- If I set any variable for a specific category, it will show the variable name for ALL categories, but not any selected options.
Here's an example: http://www.speedrun.com/Need_for_Speed_III_Hot_Pursuit/Hometown#PC
It clearly shows "Mode" (for ALL categories even though it's specified as PC category only), but no selected option. I've tried to delete the variable, submit the run again, but the only thing that works is to switch the variable to all categories.

Is youtube embedding limited to just 5 links? Whenever I put more, it just displays them as links, not videos.

If your game use both real time and in-game time and you submit a run, the "Add run" page actually shows "Time" and "In-game time". It should be "Real time", otherwise it's a bit confusing.
I'll talk to JessicaSix and we'll make some.
Found some new stuff, that should bring the run to sub 8 hours:
-
SSD - not sure how much faster the loading times will be, but even just one second per one race would make the run faster by at least 4-5 minutes.
-
Skip Rachel's tutorial speech - saves around 20 seconds.
-
Turn off "Crowds" - I found this by accident, but if you keep this setting turned off, you won't see those annoying cutscenes at the beginning of each race. Shouldn't save much as these can be skipped, but every second helps.
-
6th gear, Differential and LSD skip - this is what online racers use, because you get much higher top speed. You also get slightly better launches, which combined with higher top speed results in much better drags. I was also surprised the car can do much better and longer drifts. My average scores went 15-30% higher and I've already managed to easily beat all stage 4 drifts without using GTI, so it's possible I won't need it at all, thus save 2-3 minutes. As for the races, I did quite an extensive testing and there doesn't seem to be any difference on twisted courses. There's however difference on highway courses.
Yeah, this is oldschool game, so it requires a lot of knowledge and skill.
Well, you might want to find some streaming guide before you even begin speedrunning RTA. You could do the run with just Fraps, though, but it will be without on-screen timer, so it will have to be timed manually.
As for "speedrunning" this game, you first need a config. There's loads of console commands that will help you playing this game, but you don't have to use them if you don't want to. In-game settings is quite okay.
Some helpful commands:
r_fullbright 1 - I think this needs to be set every time you start the game. What it does is make the whole game bright, but you have to use lightmap. If you use vertex, your game will look really bizzare. r_picmip 1-15 - The higher the number, the less detailed textures will be. 15 makes all walls just one color, which is best. r_integrity/gamma - Brightness settings. cg_forcemodel - Makes all enemies your model. Recommended is tankjr/blue cg_drawgun 2 - Makes your weapon "stable". Also helps to narrow your lightning gun shaft. I recommend to use drawgun 0 for all other weapons. cg_truelightning 1 - Ignores ping for your lightning gun. cg_drawtimer 1 - Shows in-game timer. com_maxfps 125 - Limits your fps to 125. Always make sure you have stable 125, because that's the number the physics work best with. ch_crosshairsize - Size of your croshair. sensitivity - Mouse sensitivity.
There are many more commands, so if you need more info what each setting does, open your q3config.cfg in baseq3 folder and google it.
Then it's just about your skill, map knowledge, movement skills, spawn knowledge and a lot of luck.
Expect a hard time learning all the tricks. It takes a LOT of time to master it.
