For the sake of people being able to post times, I set up a leaderboard for it real quick here: http://www.speedrun.com/smsinsane .
Right now video is required to submit, as I've turned verification off since there are no moderators for this yet, and I don't think the main leaderboard moderators have any interest in verifying runs for this.
Take a look at the guides section here on the leaderboards. In general if you want to start running this game, you just need to get a feel for the levels (play through them a few times) and learn the two major skips (Gelato Beach Skip, Yoshi Skip) and then you're good to go.
People would just look for easy bingo cards and run them to get WR. It would just become a longer version of 20 Shines, which by the way is also supposed to be race category instead of something you do runs of.
Game Name: Super Mario Sunshine System: GameCube, playing on Wii Category: Any% Gameplay Estimate: 1 hour 20 minutes Ending/Bonus Estimate: 5 minutes Possible Donation Incentives: N/A Sample run video:
Description: Super Mario Sunshine is the 3rd most played game on speedrun.com, and the Any% category has the most runs on console of any category. The community surrounding the game is very welcoming to new runners, and there is a lot of resources available for the constant stream of new people that want to run the game.
The run itself contains fast paced movement consisting of a lot of different tech, as well as a few interesting glitches/tricks which save a lot of time. These two things combined make it a very fun run to watch. The game has also seen a lot of optimization in the past year, with WR being improved from a 1:19 to a 1:16, partially due to a new skip being found that saves up to a minute.
Availability: Every day, any time. Preferably not between 00:00 and 07:00 CET, but if need be I could manage.
You can do it repeatedly, but it's only useful in Bingo because that's the only time where doing Sirena early will give you an advantage. The act of completing Sirena does nothing special, so you're really just entering Sirena Beach very slowly 7 times in a row, before doing the rest of the run.
This video was all but confirmed fake, in case anyone was wondering. No one has been able to replicate this despite the creator claiming that it could be done consistently (and making 2 videos of it, one of which showed obvious use of some sort of teleport code).
Kenobiwii.bin is included in the files as far as I know, and kenobigc.bin isn't needed to boot SMS through Nintendont. I can confirm that the SD version of the files works at least, as I've helped someone set them up without any issues.
Some people have had issues with the game being black and white, most notably MegaLarvitar. I'm not sure what causes it, but the least you can try is disabling/ enable progressive scan (hold B while booting the game of the option doesn't appear).
The ISO that comes with the .zip file is NTSC-U, cause that's the only version that the codes work for. There are JP codes, but as far as I know they're bugged.
I think it's pretty presumptuous to just make a poll like this. Obviously opinions are important, but if people want to be mod then it's their own responsibility to step up for the position. Most of the people on that list have never expressed interest in becoming a leaderboard moderator.
That being said, the reason I personally don't do much on here is because between all submitted runs get accepted really fast already by the other mods, so my input is rarely needed. I also run the sunshinecommunity Twitter account, and am working on completing the new SMS Guide.
As for how this place could be better, we're pretty much using speedrun.com to its fullest extent, and are the biggest game that does so. There are a bunch of things that we would like to do, but the current state of the website simply doesn't allow it. As such our hands are tied, and we're mostly left just verifying/rejecting runs.
