Sooooo, it's been over a month on this since the discussion was started in discord. Can we put it to a vote if there's no other opinion's/info? (also there's the other forum topics that could be finalized)
It’s been a while so I’ll post my thoughts again. Regarding lag it is hard to compare 100%, but if we can’t accurately prove its within this game I think we have to assume a difference doesn’t exist. There’s only a few areas in this game that lag does come into play and now I’ve played emu & hardware for an extensive time I can say I’ve never noticed a difference. That doesn’t mean there isn’t one, just my personal experience. If it was a noticeable difference I feel like we would have noticed it ourselves in the time we’ve all spent watching others play different versions. And if it does exist so minimally in the few sections that the lag does effect us I don’t see it being an issue worth debating over.
Again if it can be proved and we can detail the time differences and line all the sprites up etc so it matches that would be best but at the moment the only game specific results we have to base our thoughts on is Esta’s testing. If others want to test as well to compare results that would be great but at the moment that’s the most detailed conclusion.
And again my opinion is there’s no reason to split the board based on those results. And the emulators allowed be restricted to Retroarch using the Genesis Plus GX core or Blastem core, or Bizhawk with the Genesis Plus GX core.
On this one I'd vote it stays in Misc. It's different enough that It's good that it exists and It's fun to play the full be prepared (not sure about fun but you know what I mean). But I don't think it should be a full category thing. Interested for others opinions.
Yeah I'm in for a try too. Even if it is just a 30 min play to die to the last hyena fight in graveyard haha.
When exactly would we reset? on flip button press, during scars throw or once scar is off screen? I'd imagine once scar is off screen would be best? That way we know we scar didn't manage to stay on the ledge and we have a little time to reach the reset button.
This topic came up again the other day and I thought I'd share another thought on it.
- Only show milliseconds if times are equal (I'd also say this could just be applied to Top 3 (5 or 10 would be fine too)) Then if one of the tied players PB again and there's no longer a tie, just convert the timed run back to seconds.
In terms of not splitting those results are very manageable, especially when we’re still only counting by seconds, half the time when adding the 0.5 time to emulated runs there would technically be no change to the time (with how it’s displayed on the board).
If it wasn’t a static number of difference, or even if that number was a few seconds higher which I could see annoy people by having to add to there times possibly taking away spots higher on the board because of a penalty system basically, but a consistent 0.5s, I feel is a very small margin to split over.
I can probably be convinced either way really, but atm I’d prob have my vote in keeping it together.
With testing that has been done so far what are the time differences like?
All good, it was never a big issue just one of those little annoyances I thought I'd bring up some time. Saying that while doing IL with save states (or even in lvl Saves) I never had a consistent RNG regarding vultures/leopards/be prepared etc. To my knowledge the only RNG is with the leopards tie out rate? (actually interested if there's other things) everything else seems to be controlled by Simba's positioning. I believe there are no global timed based RNG in this game. But it's not an issue worth perusing for me so let's just keep the soft reset rule.
In regard to the main thread topic, IL under the same principles save states at all would technically be disallowed but that would basically make them unplayable haha. To get a perfect run can take a hundred resets so I can't see any body doing full resets - cheat menu - restart on each attempt. So accepting we ignore that, I believe the main question is simply should we start the timer WAIT WAIT WAIT... I just realized the confusion here.
What @EIGHT is proposing is only 1.8 seconds faster than the current rule. She didn't realize we already where starting from save states? Which is why insom pointed out the rules that state "You can use a save state to load to the title screen". I thought you just wanted to save the extra 1.8s which is why I didn't think it was a big deal either way and I thought that was the reason Insoms response didn't make sense.
So for clarity - The current rule is... Go into the cheat menu, select your lvl, now your at the main menu. Create a Save State. Press Go + Split at same time.
Unless I also have just misunderstood everything.
Counting frame in would be as easy/hard as counting frame out, just makes reattempts faster so seems fine to me.
I never cared enough to bring this up officially either (and now I'm planning on going hardware I wish I did ages ago haha). In the same vein, should emulator players be able to just start game runs from a save state at main menu? That's allowed on the SNES board, nothing has ever been shown that it can alter runs in anyway. I believe when it was first brought in (reading old posts) it was to make the game more 'professional looking'. Saying that we all know how the game looks and random players really only watch WR's. My proposal for that change would be to get rid of the 'must start from hard reset' rule entirely and merely mention that if you believe your going to be attempting WR runs to 'recommend' a full game lead in.
Will just say we don’t need to get carried away with getting so exact with any% it would be much extra effort. Really rounding to a tenth of a second (x.200 vs x.300) would lessen the chance of having dual positions by 90% and still have increased accuracy when flicking though. Just another thought.
If a mod is up to going though all runs and adding the milliseconds that would be the best. Other wise top 10 would align with the forced input rule so that would be something too. My OCD side just isn’t keen to have mixed timings throughout the board haha but no big deal really. And yeah no cons I can see.
I’m all for it, maybe add it to all top 5 times on the leaderboard. Would help distinguish the top 3 ‘podium’ places and would still look clean if only the top 5 runs went to milliseconds. I know if I tied with someone for a position I’d be checking milliseconds myself and always correcting people if the tied position was actually faster than mine as really that should be the placements. Especially atm where there’s more people at similar skill.
Can someone explain the reasoning with the new mods being added and how we came to the decision of Carter and Akiteru? Seems strange that Akiteru who doesn't run genesis at all is currently is a mod here? Maybe he could be added to SNES as a second mod there as it still only has 1 mod. Firstly it should have been brought up before any final decisions were made. Secondary I would like it to be someone who is currently running and involved with streams, which there are a lot of currently. Are we able to get a list of the candidates and get a group discussion going?
Hey, just messaging as I noticed no one else has since I saw the post last week. I spoke to the site mods a couple months ago because this game was kind of dead. Bummyeire hasn't logged on in a couple years, they got a hold of KillerHUD though and said he had turned on email notifications so should be a more active.
Any way I think that would be a fine idea combining them into sub category versions of this game. It's not a huge community or popular game with multiple run types. Creating a very slightly larger more condensed community couldn't hurt it.
I've only done a quick full run so far, planning on spending a bit of time in it in the near future and hopefully get competitive.
Saying that, you seem pretty active on this site so if @KillerHUD wanted to remove Bummyeire as a moderator and add you as a second, if he felt the need, that would be good too if you where interested (The Sitemods told me to ask this a while ago with adding myself but I don't mind if its you)
My only thoughts would be that it might be worth adding a line like “Mandatory if posting a top 10 time” that way you still make it easier for a casual speed runners and don’t risk rejecting some high time runs.
Hi, regarding becoming a mod of the Maui mallard in cold shadow board, since our last check 1 of the mods has verified the runs. If you want to leave it now that’s fine, if you wanted to replace the other mod that has been offline for a year I’d be happy to do that as well. Regarding my name, I guess I could change it to ‘PlayingWithRichard’ or something. I go by Dick in general, and have PlayingWithDick as twitch etc. haven’t had any one take offence but if you think it would be better for this site for me to change it I can. Just let me know. Thanks.
As long as whatever is the majority consensus here is honoured, that’s all we can really ask for, of course we can give it a couple days for everybody to have a chance to express themselves, we know the active player base is very responsive on discord so it shouldn’t take long for those that do care about changes to put there input in.
Also Alfredo, could you expand on what you mentioned regrading individual level leader boards being a problem on other games? They seem to just add an extra column to the right of the page like in the genesis version, I’m not sure how this could impact the current leaderboard quality?
I think the big problem is that it feels you are running this leader board as a ruler not as the ‘doing as the community wants’ which is the role of a mod. When new requests are asked for I believe they should be brought up in the discord for discussion and votes (Unless they have already been recently posted on in the last year or something).
I think it’s important to remember your opinion is still valid on arguments and that’s good but also you still only have 1 vote on issues.
You cannot have a short list of other mods you would allow, you can have a vote with the community and express your thoughts but ultimately we need to have a discussion and choose as a community. And yes as stormy was saying apart from Akiteru, all those options are terrible as they are not active and don’t know what the community wants. I also hadn’t heard of 2 of them and TMR hasn’t been active at all since I’ve been here at least. I think that goes with kingtayyab’s comment in that with the community growing we need a more modern approach (at least a more active one).
Apart from bringing normal% out of Misc. all other options don’t change the look of the front page if your concern was ‘keeping it less confusing for new people’ I think you also may be misjudging people intelligence if you think that would be off putting.
Basically, you have people showing support for ideas that will make this game more active. This is the community here. If anyone has any points for or against any proposed changes let’s use this forum to sort it out. At the moment I see 7? (I’m on my phone so can’t check) users agreeing with change and 1 against.
This has been linked in the discord so hopefully everybody will be able to post there opinions here.
I also agree with the proposed changes and I think this community is big enough to have 2 moderators either way, just so there's isn't any future issues, I think @Nichole would also be a good choice help run the page.
Hi, I would like to request becoming the/a Mod for 'Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow' (https://www.speedrun.com/mmcs#Any_), I have only just submitted a run to meet the requirements but i have had a friend who has had his run waiting to be verified for quite a while. I have a group of 4 people who are starting to run this game and hope to get very competitive. Both current mods are only a mod for this 1 game, 1 hasn't been online in 1 year, the other 1 month (I also checked there twitchs, both seem to be inactive). The game itself hasn't had a verified run for 7 months so I don't believe the current mods wouldn't be categorized as active. Thanks for the help.
