I have updated the game rules to be clearer, based on recent submissions. some extra points below:

• in speedrunning, it is generally expected all runs are recorded live, with audio/video, as they happen.

• when RTA/timers are requested, this is expected live during runs to assist verification where possible (often with early/late splits).

• it is the runners responsibility to submit accurate times, but the moderators to verify these, re-timing as necessary. please do not submit duplicates.

• 'official' versions are considered to be the commercially released products available up to and including sensi 96/97.

• WinUAE and FS-UAE are accepted, with unmodified game rosters / db files, everything visible in a run must be able to be replicated by other runners.

• moderators tend to look for obvious things that are out of place, and ensure rules are followed. this may include checking starting rosters are default in some cases.

• runners on real h/w may use disk versions, but be advised there may be a loading time penalty against other versions on longer runs.

• the usual amiga running considerations with configurations/fast mem/etc also apply: a general rule is any configuration that produces severe graphical or sound glitches, or unnatural game speed, is considered invalid.

• people new to the site are requested to peruse the general etiquette and guidelines forum here, if in doubt site staff can be consulted with regards to making forum posts, requests, issues that may arise etc.

submissions are expected to be verified from within 1 to 3 weeks, as a site-wide rule. the runs pending on this board have only been submitted within the last 4 days. please respect site etiquette.

Arran4 years ago

@Redhair it's ok, moderators retime runs anyway based on video evidence, especially with subsecond variances. as long as all runs are verified the same way it's fine.

we can measure fairly accurately within a frame (maybe two when there's doubt) when a goal is scored by visual indicators. using the highlight replay feature as a video run is not permitted.

I would ask newcomers to the board to respect we are here to encourage fair speedrunning, we have been running this game for over a year, and to respect one another.

there appear to be 2 separate issues here: xfleas run, and allowing modding (and what modding is defined as). I would prefer individual runs to be discussed privately in future.

the run in question used custom teams, against existing rules (no mixed teams). the run also cropped the bottom quarter and left side, suggesting this was made mid-game, also against the rules (run has to start from kickoff). it also did not include a timer (again mentioned in rules).

while seemingly cosmetic, the point of 'no-modding' is to let anyone looking at a run with original game versions see and copy what someone else did, without suspicion. we also have to consider certain implications of player/team editing that might be amusing to a player, but possibly offensive to others.

using highlights for submissions, allowing or disallowing, wasn't mentioned in the rules. however, use of the highlight system is not something that should be used for speedrunning. perhaps this is the etiquette for sharing goals/games on other sites, here the emphasis is on speedrunning, and eliminating as much doubt as possible.

it is very easy to use a separate install for unmodded speedrunning if required (this includes not altering any team/player names using in-game functionality), and recording live footage during a run.

hi, xflea ! your run was nice, but unfortunately it does appear to be modded (permanent scoreboard visible, modded teams etc). WinUAE is fine, but only with official versions of the game.

Arran4 years ago

please remember that any kind of mods used will invalidate runs for any of the categories (as a wider src rule, we have to keep things as fair as possible- official/vanilla game versions only, unmodified rosters).

Arran4 years ago

ok, the board has been updated. we can add some more once we've tried them out.

Arran4 years ago

adding a preset world cup category is a possibility, essentially a hard mode cup. anything else may be duplicating something we already have in place though. mod categories are not something I think we should do, unless the board becomes more populated.

Arran4 years ago

hello ! simply add a post here or message me with suggestions. the ones we have right now are probably sufficient (maybe too many as it is) but if we can get new players involved, and the board doesn't become too messy, new categories might be a good idea.

that was a good video, thanks for uploading !

edit mode is certainly more enjoyable. the default parameters are the same as before (except we're running Coastal), but there seem to be less repeated patterns than I remember (little sections repeated / rotated etc.).

as we're changing a parameter, it's still a different setup to the old way. I'm inclined to say we just continue like this though, enforce pressing MAKE. as it's easy to misclick and adjust the sliders, having the slider values for reference might be useful too.

having had a chance to try out this edit mode :

-there is effectively no way to know if a user used edits, if they choose not to show it. -enforcing edit screen to be visible, and using MAKE button is only way to implement it. -what we'd been running with up until a few months ago seems to match default options when you first go into edit screen (shown below). -spamming MAKE is a great way to get new maps, compared to what we had to do. -can repeat maps, just pressing edit map & done. *not sure I like this.

we can enforce use of the MAKE button to get round repeating. but adjusting parameters seems to be going into cheating territory, effectively removing terraforming with no skill involved. unless we set a 'less tedious' limit on what we can change.

[default parameters:]

COAST disabled RIVER enabled Hills: 4 Water: 2 Trees: 5

we really shouldn't be going near the edit screen for a speedrun, it leaves the door open to too many interpretations and arbitrary rules that have to be defined, as we can see here.

if you're really keen on using edit mode just to get a seed, without actually terraforming (just using sliders and make), then maybe that's a category. flat map perhaps it's own category entirely, or some combination of the two.

changing the course of a river is a heavy edit, and should probably be part of a timed run if it's to make any sense. you might as well just run flat map, though.

you might get some interest in the Snes version, why not try ?

a few points: the start frame in Dos should really be when the button is released (not pushed), as the game cannot progress until release (especially if timing to the millisecond).

also, having to reroll map rng was always (a very tedious) part of this game. modding should not really be used in the main categories, it's changing default game behavior and effectively using a different set of rules to which we all ran with. editing might be appropriate for an Any% category, and does keep things fresh. having them together in a single category seems unfair.

optimal or recommended settings are a good idea, perhaps something specific should be mentioned in the rules with a mini-guide ?

just a heads-up, but yt is flagging some Commando videos with a content id claim, surprisingly. it looks very obscure, related to a cover song made in 2001. runners may wish to monitor this just in case with any current / future uploads.

thanks for uploading, perhaps this is a little too trivial on its own. if this was tied to some kind of primary achievement, adding a senator requirement to finish off could be a good idea. I'll maybe add it to see how it goes anyway. ideally, something 5 minutes + would be a good fit for a new category.

I'm open to a new category, at the moment we do have 3 available though. if there's enough interest in a new category / goal (and not too trivial), I'll add it perhaps as a misc category. do you have a run of something specific you could put forward ?

time without loads is a good idea when load times are inconsistent and there is no alternative, but that isn't the case here. we would still have doubt (since we are within seconds of each other), and enforcing loadless won't encourage new runs. hopefully, we can (by new run submissions or starting afresh) remove the adjusted runs.

discussione: Super Cars II
Arran5 years ago

@MilkToast did you submit your WinUAE run by mistake ? there is >1 second difference each load (6 shop / 7 race) which does add up. will make the adjustment just to get the run up, future runs please try to use the recommended setup.

discussione: Super Cars II
Arran5 years ago

the preferred emulator is FS-UAE, A1200, 8mb fast, whdload to keep a meaningful board. note that winuae often has different load times. reboots loads are ~69.25 seconds longer overall, so 16:00 is about right. this is assuming no differences in game speed.

Arran5 years ago

The Goal Time Deduction rule was implemented to encourage positive, attacking play, rather than simply scoring a goal and keeping possession each game.

At the moment, it is still more efficient to score a goal, keep possession, and have as few attempts on goal as possible (owing to time lost when keeper saves or ball goes out of play).

A 7-second deduction overall should both reward the player for scoring, yet also keep things in check for players wanting to play the possession game and save time that way. If anything, this figure is too low and only becomes efficient with high scoring figures each game.

This is still an experimental rule and may change: normal RTA is still required for each run in any case. Additional categories will be added later.
