Emulator Rule Changes for Sly Cooper Speedruns
After months of deliberation in the Mod Room and discussion with the community via the temporary channel we created this month, we are ready to announce substantial restructuring regarding the status of emulator for Sly 1-3 speedruns.
Sly 1
Emulator runs using RPCS3 (versions 0.0.29 and newer) to emulate the HD Remaster will now be eligible for submission. Previously, PCSX2 was the only legal emulator.
For full-game categories, emulator runs will now be split into their own leaderboard under both “Original” and “Remaster (Load Patch).” Previously, these runs were hidden by default and ineligible to claim records. The Console leaderboard will be the main one.
PCSX2 runs on the NTSC-U and PAL versions will fall under the Original -> Emulator category.
RPCS3 runs and PCSX2 runs on the NTSC-J JPN/KOR versions will fall under the Remaster (Load Patch) -> Emulator category.
For individual level categories (Master Thief Sprints), emulator runs will still be housed on the same, single leaderboard; they will now be shown by default, but they still may not claim a time equal to or faster than the current World Record.
Sly 2 & Sly 3
Emulator runs using RPCS3 (versions 0.0.29 and newer) to emulate the HD Remaster will now be eligible for submission. PCSX2 is not allowed for these games.
For all categories, emulator runs will be shown by default but are timegated; emulator runs may not claim a time among the Top 40% of the total number of leaderboard placements in a category. Emulator times faster than that timegate will be rejected.
Sly 4, Bentley's Hackpack, and Slyfecta
No changes. Emulator runs are not eligible for submission.
Category Extensions
Sly 1-3 emulator eligibility is the same as their main leaderboards. The Top 40% timegate, detailed above, applies to all CEs regardless of game.
All of these changes will be fully in effect on 1 May 2024. In the meantime, forgive our dust during the transition process as we move runs around and create these new categories. Emulator runs which predate this change are eligible for submission but won’t be verified until 1 May.
Please be sure to review the revised Game Rules for each game on Speedrun.com, which have already been updated. In addition to emulator-specific rules, we have set rules related to gamepads (controllers) and button rebinding in order to maintain purity and fairness.
Feel free to reach out to us or ask in the relevant channels if you have any questions or concerns.
