For runs without loads in them, it's technically fine, since there isn't a way for us to catch someone using it. Without accounting for load times, the gameplay should be the same speed, though I do highly appreciate if the runner were to be honest and submitted the run as an emulator if applicable.
To add more context to what Amun said, speedrunning with this method would need to be marked as emulator as burning Wii Party into a DVD is not an official way of playing the game. Although it may not load that much faster, it is important to keep the emulator rule consistent.
Maybe this has already been mentioned, and not much is or can be done about it, or people don't know about it, but I think this is worth sharing. I don't know if it's too late to suggest something like having a leaderboard and separating runs between Wii Party running at 50Hz vs 60Hz. That was why I played Wii Party on the PAL version on my Space Race run; it was the only way to reach at least 18 seconds or below. Even on the Jumbo Jump minigame, the only way to legitimately get the max score of 464m is to get the PAL version of the game and run it at 50Hz on console.
This is off topic but no biggie. I've concluded on this a little while ago that nothing needs to be changed since it only affects a couple individual minigames, but having annotations for 50Hz refresh and 60Hz refresh is not a bad idea for the future so it's noted.
Can't you split up the emulator and disc runs? then it's fair for everyone because the loading screen speed advantage is gone and then you can chose to play on disc or emulator and you don't need to pay money to speedrun
This has actually been considered, but I'm not a fan of how it'd look on all of the categories since it would need to appear as a subcategory. With the amount of emulator tagged runs there are, I'm not sure if it's really worth the effort doing.
I just want to slap some of my opinions here as well.
I don't believe a game as old as this should cost money to speedrun.
I would like to the blame the website. If Elo improved the emulator tag by adding an option to put emulator tagged runs in a separate leaderboard instead of the same leaderboard for a category, this issue would instantly go away.
I definitely encourage more opinions from others though because trying to categorize emulator/USB loader runs has been, to say it lightly, one of the biggest pains in the rear end I've had to deal with as a moderator for this game.
What Amun said. We can definitely add them without getting in trouble but I still would like to keep these boards time-related. We'd also have to make people use milliseconds to punch in the score which would just look weird. Although I do find it a shame as well that those places mentioned do not allow multiplayer scores.
I believe a 100 points category would eventually have the same timing issue as regular friend connection where the difference would only lie on how fast you can mash a button and how fast your game loads. To avoid adding anymore categories like this, I would prefer not to add a 100 points category
We had a discussion about Chop Chops and decided not to add it (for now) because of the framewar, retiming, etc. which plagues minigames like Flag Footrace and more.
The rest of the minigames can be optimized so easily that they're not really worth adding.
I actually do plan on adding lose categories here, which includes Match-Up. Obviously we're not going to add everything from the full leaderboard in losing form.
Oh right, I've mistaken Lofty Leap for the minigame where you jump the logs. That definitely can't be added for sure.
Chop Chops and Zombie Tag are a maybe. Lofty Leap would instantly be fully optimized since it's easy to dodge all the objects. Face Flip would also instantly be fully optimized since you simply have to reset until you flip three in a row. Obviously this is ironic since there are minigames in the IL board with the same logic in mind but they were added a while ago and learning from the past I would like to put these kinds of minigames on hold for now. This is definitely subject to future discussion.
Challenge Clover Hunt is already in the leaderboard under the "Challenge" category.
Thread is locked. If you have a suggestion, feel free to tell me in the Discord server or create a new thread. I believe the process is simpler that way.
If you go to the leaderboard for Flag Fracas multiple players and controllers, you will see that the only time in the board is by N/A, meaning that the category is invalid. speedrun.com doesn't have a feature where we can get rid of categories for specific minigames yet.
The reason why multiple players and controllers is invalid for Flag Fracas is because none of the players can affect each other's times since they are in separate lanes. Because the other players can't contribute, the run is only submitted as the winning player and put into the 1P category.
Game audio is not required, but please have it on if you have it available. It makes it easier for us to verify the run.
Also, I can add a rule requiring in-game audio if the community would like that. If it happens, I'll keep the runs that were verified before the change.
"Timebug" happens when the in-game time is not equal to the real time. I first found this when looking at AlKoTho's Silverstone lap times in GT class during their career mode speedrun.
I decided to investigate further. I took a race three of us did (Springfield in GT class) and compared our first lap IGT to our first lap RTA. I timed the RTA by taking the first frame of the first lap (basically when the timer first goes from .00) then taking the first frame of the next lap. Here are the results:
AlKoTho (PC, 30 FPS) IGT: 1:38.94 RTA: 1:38.333
alchemistake (PC, 30 FPS) IGT: 1:42.62 RTA: 1:41.367
AdamLikeScars (PS2, 30 FPS) IGT: 1:42.26 RTA: 1:42.333
Since it has been roughly a week since the first post, I decided to apply the changes.
NG and NG+ have been removed, PRO season NG has been renamed to Any%, and GT season, GTS season, and the newly added PRO season are NG+.
After this, I retimed the GTS season runs so that they fit with the new rules. PRO season is blank since it is new, so feel free to submit runs from your Any% videos if you'd like.
Yeah, you would do single seasons with an existing file.
I am unsatisfied with how the Career category looks. Currently, there is the three classes in a variable and NG/NG+ in another variable. I feel like this could be simplified though.
My idea is to have one variable with an "Any%" (basically PRO Class NG), then have single seasons for each class which would be NG+. I would like to consider other ideas from the community before I make a decision.
It's absolutely OK if your platform has faster/no loading times since I expected that to happen. It would be great to have something that removes loading times though!
I've been having a hard time trying to pinpoint when the fanfare starts, especially in videos with not-so-great quality, so I've changed the time ending to when your final score starts to turn dark right after it is being calculated. I chose this because it is the first sign that your score is final, and it is an instant and dramatic change in color so it is much easier to pinpoint the ending frame.
With that being said, I had to retime every Friend Connection run to align with the new rules. Some changes in ranking happened, but nothing of significance in my opinion since 1st-4th has not changed.
