Thanks! I suppose I'll only take the time to submit IL records if they're really good, anyway.
As to the other question: in the game Ice Age, there are two categories for full game runs: Any% and 100%. Those categories carry over to the IL runs. However, if you 100% all levels, you'll get a bonus level. That level should have an IL leaderboard as well. But in the bonus level the 100% condition for the other levels isn't achievable. This means there's no difference between Any% and 100%. On top of that, the bonus level ends in a different way than the normal levels do, which means the timing rules don't apply. It would be useful if I could make that one IL leaderboard have a different category than the others. :)
It got added already! Within a week, this time! :)
Hello! I see many games have IL leaderboards, but quite some of them are almost, or completely, empty. Something I've been wondering: should times submitted to the IL leaderboard include that level only, or can IL records be part of full runs, or even failed runs that had some really good splits earlier on?
Another question: is it possible to restrict IL categories from specific levels?
That's true, SpiderSponge. I'm just not used to one-time donations for 'eternal' perks. ;) And if that is the case, I am surprised that less than 50% of the users has got those perks!
Hello.
SUPPORT US FOR JUST $5, AND YOU'LL GET ACCESS TO THESE COOL FEATURES!
Is this a monthly or yearly supportership, or a one-time donation, with perks to keep?
It seems like no IL records have been set yet. How about we change it to require pick-ups off?
When I started a couple of months ago, [I asked the same question]("https://www.speedrun.com/Speedrunning/thread/x7csf" I asked the same question), and got a really helpful reply from Simon. :)
"Verifying" merely means accepting the run to the leaderboard.
Look at the run, be sure that the category's goals were met, be reasonably confident that it's not cheated, and that the submitted time is accurate. Then you accept the run by verifying (click the three dots in upper-right corner of a run's page, select verify). The site can't check how closely you looked at the run before verifying the run. Instead, the runners trust the moderators to do a reasonable job.
You can't rule out cheating 100 % from a video recording. Some trust is required. :-)
If you're suspicious about a run, ask community members. If nobody finds solid proof, I'd verify the run. Most submissions are not cheated, that's the important base case. In a pinch, moderators can remove a run after it got verified.
You'll develop intuition for what is good human play, and what is probably TAS. In some 3D games with analog directional input, you can distinguish good TASing from human input from character movement. In old 2D platformers, that's much more difficult. :-) Humans nail frame-perfect presses and can button-mash faster than 10 Hz with good rhythm.
"Cheating in Speedrunning - How easy is it? A brief history and assessment" talks about game modding, TASing, and splicing (stitching videos together), along with examples how each got debunked: https://www.reddit.com/r/speedrun/comments/6ci50v/

Hey! Why aren't there any rules on pick-ups? I feel like that for the individual level leaderboards, pick-ups should be off, as the category seems more like a time trial mode. Say someone gets two batteries in one lap, they're much more likely to get the fastest lap than someone who gets none, which makes it very RNG-heavy. On the other hand, all full runs I've seen so far played with pick-ups on. The rules don't state that being necessary. So does that mean you're allowed to play without pick-ups as well? That might be easier to optimise.
How about RVGL? Edit: I just realised it's been used before, so I assume it is in fact allowed.
Why would you request a leaderboard if you haven't got a decent full run of any future category yet?
I don't think it's an issue. But I can see issues may arise out of it easily.
With more and more games getting requested every day, do more admins get recruited too?
I really like Ice Age, especially as a speed-game. It's a simple platformer with straight-forward mechanics, but there are some really neat tricks and tactics possible, in my opinion. I requested the game to be added today, as I finally got a decent run. It's got a lot of mistakes in it, however, so one could probably beat it relatively easily. :)
I'd like the Atari ST added as a platform, so I can finally add support for the various platforms for the game I'm moderator of. I asked in the sticky thread meant for it in July, but I haven't received a response.
Yup. I did a run on BizHawk, on my desktop pc (which is more powerful than my laptop), and it went a whole lot more smoothly. The framerate was fully stable, while in VBA it gets bad half of the time. My laptop isn't as strong, but it should be able to run most things without problems... but perhaps it can't handle recording and emulating at the same time?... I'll try some more. At this point, the time I'd lose with a potential freeze is less than the time I lose to my own mistakes anyway. :P
I can't afford to spend $150,- to enjoy speedrunning better.
VBA is extremly inaccurate to the point where Bizhawk (which btw uses either the VBA-next or mGBA core for GBA games) during routing felt like a 10% speed improvement that I also felt when I finally got to try Pokemon Emerald on console. Trying stuff like Spinner manip in that game on VBA also showcases the input lag very well. And I'm not at all used to original hardware, because I haven't owned the game for about 7 years before that
I'd really like to use BizHawk instead. But as I said, it froze on me for a couple of frames, something Visual Boy Advance hasn't ever done. Have you got any idea on how to prevent that? (also, VBA isn't 'extremely inaccurate'. It looks and sounds identical to my eyes and ears, and if it were 'extremely inaccurate', it wouldn't even look and sound remotely similar.)
The only way to record GBA games on original hardware, that I know of, is using the Gamecube's Gameboy Player. I haven't got a Gamecube, however.
Hm, I haven't had that issue in LiveSplit. Perhaps there is a switch in the settings? In LiveSplit, it registers as a split whenever I press the key anywhere, which means I need to close it if I do some internet browsing or something on the side, or else I'll start 'running' unintentionally. :P I think your best bet for the first question is asking one of the runners for their layout and split files. :)
