# How To Start Speedrunning

If you’ve found your passion is running a game and getting your name up on a leaderboard, you’ll first need to select which game you are most interested in. We recommend choosing a game that you have enjoyed in the past and are looking forward to discovering more about - you will almost always learn something new about your favorite games by learning about the speedrun.

After selecting the game, next up is selecting a category. Categories are essentially different objectives for the game, and popular category options include:

- **100%** - Completing the entire game. This can often include completing certain objective lists, collecting all key items, completing all side quests, etc.. What counts as 100% is determined by the community and game moderators.
- **Any%** - For those who simply want to complete the game as fast as possible, Any% is about finding the shortest way to that goal. If you like going fast and using a variety of glitches and tricks, Any% will likely appeal to you.
- **Glitchless** - Glitchless is a category that avoids using glitches to complete the game. It can often rely on tricks, but you won’t need to learn anything considered a glitch by the community.

There are a variety of different objectives, and each one will have its rules listed for you to make your decision. If you have any questions about the rules or category, clarification can usually be found by joining the game’s Discord server as listed on the Game Page. Within the Discord and Game Page you will also find a variety of guides and resources. Feel free to read through them to learn the most popular routes and glitches.

Most runs will require video evidence. Videos can be recorded through screen capturing software and uploaded to video hosting sites like YouTube, or live streamed and saved on streaming sites like Twitch. After you’ve practiced and captured your best attempt, submit the run on the Game Page and a game moderator will verify it within 1-3 weeks.

Most of all, have fun! If you aren’t enjoying grinding towards your best times, you may be interested in participating in the speedrunning community through another role. There isn’t one way to be a part of the community, and those who cheer on runners or develop tools are just as important as those who run.

# Joining A Community

Joining a speedrunning community doesn’t mean you have to become a runner or a game moderator, although those are definitely popular options. Users can support their communities with a variety of skills, including but not limited to:

- Game Moderators
- Runners

- Designers & Artists
- Fans & Viewers
- & More

The best way to get involved is to find a [game](https://www.speedrun.com/games) you’re passionate about and join the Discord listed on their Game Page. From there you can find the activities you are most excited about and discover how they can contribute to the community of your choice. Discord servers often include instructions on how to get started, as well as community members who can answer any questions you may have about the game.

# Navigating a Game Page

## Full-game Leaderboard

Typically the main leaderboard for a game, although game moderators can decide to show the Level Leaderboard as the default if they so choose. Here you will find the major categories listed at the top of the board as decided by the community. Meme or less official categories may be found in the Category Extensions page.

Runners can also find the rules for each category on this page, as well as submit their runs for moderator review. Runs should take 1-3 weeks to be verified.

If you follow a game, it will show up on your homepage feed as well as give you the ability to filter for games you follow on the Streams page.

Just at the bottom of the header beneath the game's Title, platforms, cover, etc. you’ll find the main menu for Levels (assuming the full-game leaderboard is the default view), News, Guides, Resources, Forums, Streams, Stats, and sometimes more depending on the game.

Widgets are on the right hand side of the leaderboard, let's go through them one by one.

### Game Stats

The Game Stats widget provides a wealth of valuable information to enhance your understanding of the game and its community. You can access a variety of metrics, such as the cumulative number of players who have participated in the game, the current player count, the total number of submitted runs, how many runs were submitted recently, and much more.

# What Is Speedrunning?

Speedrunning is when an individual attempts to beat part or all of a video game as quickly as possible. This can include individual levels, specific objectives, or unique limitations as decided by the community or player.

Speedrun.com is a toolset for building communities around speedrunning games. Game moderators can create leaderboards, post resources, and verify submissions by runners. Communities are able to come together to decide on specific rulesets for different categories that runners can then submit their runs to.

Speedrun.com also aims to highlight all facets of the speedrunning community. From marathons raising millions of dollars for charity to competitions and races to those who help route and find the game-changing glitches, the speedrunning ecosystem is robust and every contribution matters. Be sure to read the [game request rules](https://www.speedrun.com/gamerequestrules) beforehand, and try to fill out the form as best as you can, providing as much information about the game in question as possible.
