i was just playing around with the game and found this:

This doesn't actually save time because time spent entering and exiting the pipe (down time) which is also when the timer is not counting down is longer in the end
Because, you notice how you can't do anything for some time because of the fact that Mario is entering and exiting the pipe. The ingame timer isn't that accurate anyway But you should keep trying to find ways to save time, you might find something else! I encourage that
You save one IG unit on the timer but you lose seconds from entering the pipe.
You lose about 5 seconds in real time by going down the pipe in 4-1.
