How a very strange bug just ruined my speedrun

I'm not asking for the cause or asking for help, I just wanted you to see it because it seemed absurdly strange to me.

The bug started around 8:51 (I think).

My theory is that I grabbed an extra hostage that didn't exist, so the game subtracted -1 from the already zero value, bringing it up to 255 (meaning the game detects I'm missing too many hostages and therefore won't let me finish the level).

My speedrun was going pretty well (from my point of view, obviously) but I guess sometimes I just don't have good luck, haha

I've tried to watch it a few times to figure out WHY it gave you a hostage you already saved and let you save them again - it even looks like the hostage is in a different place than they'd normally be?

I haven't the slightest clue but it def looks like you underflowed the hostage value or whatever. Nice find! Maybe it can be used for good instead of evil in the future :'D

I think it's because of the policeman's shot (the one at 8:51 minute).

Have you seen how the shot curves upward?

When that happens,

the nearest hostage just dissapear. I suppose the hostage I grabbed seconds before didn't disappear completely, so he had respawned.

This already happened to me in level 5-1 room 1. The police fill the screen with shots and the hostage simply disappears, but if I eliminate them all and go back, the hostage reappears, only in a different position.

I don't know. Maybe if I hadn't grabbed the hostage at 9:16, I would have been able to finish the level normally.

I didn't notice the bullet, but now I have lol. So much happened on that one spot - the enemy died, the hostage was collected, another enemy spawned... I wonder if it was all to much for the game to take :'D
