"Restart" in game

Hi,

My question is : What's the real effect of pressing "Restart" in game ? Less HP for bosses ? Less damages taken ?

Thanks for your answers

England

The first one on the drawers entering the guest house is to get speed, the second one after the first Mia fight is to gain speed, the one as you drop down in the boat skips the animation of landing, the final one in the saltmines is again, speedboost.

it's a movement thing, generally

I'm still not convinced the mia drop animation skip actually saves time with the timer starting early. I guess I've never timed how long that animation takes though to know for certain, but it seems silly to me.

United Kingdom

Agreed, it's really well, quick, right? The difference would be fractions of a second I'm guessing. The speed up ones I can concur with though they do save time.

England

having watched Xerian's run there's also two more that he does

  • One on entering the bathtub room and I think, /think/, this is to just speedup how long that bathtub takes to drain? I'm really not sure.
  • One just before Mia's section ends, like literally after you've already lost control of her. Apparently this puts you in the cutscene a couple of seconds faster?

Yeah I'm not sure about either of the Mia restarts being faster with the timer starting early.

United Kingdom

I remember seeing the bathroom one; I only did it on my NG+ though since you kinda need speed to avoid jack breaking the wall, but I wonder what it actually does, if Xerian comes on here it'd be great to have it clarified to find out what exact benefits it gives.

With the Mia one, is it the Mia videotape? Skipping the video at the end of the whole Mia section fair enough puts you into the game quicker but if it's the videotape where shes grabbing Alan, does that really do anything?

I'd be interested to test these but theres a loooot of retry points. Not only that if Capcom ever decide to somehow fix any speed boosts, we're into HL2 territory with version differentials

England

End of the whole Mia section, when you find Ethan in the bottom of the ship.

Sweden

It looks like Xerian is shaving off a couple of in-game seconds when he retries at the end of the boat section. Since the game timer doesn't continue to tick during loading screens (as far as I know) you can actually save a second or two because you skip directly into the Jack hallucination instead of having the in-game timer tick when Mia is going up to Ethan

I could be wrong though

United States

I believe it was CursedToast that had found in game time does start just before you are able to retry.

United Kingdom

Using the autosplitter I've noticed that the timer does stop when you pause, so the IGT stops, but as soon as you can "continue" mine starts again, so with something like speed boosts there's definitely no time deficits; and the same seems to apply for the end of Mia then, if it skips part of the game and there's no time loss from retrying, you're just deleting those few seconds, I feel there's a lot more places that it can be used

France

Well to resume, it's kinda interesting to restart :

  1. When you enter in the house for the first time
  2. After the first fight against Mia
  3. (In the bathroom) ?
  4. (At the end of Mia's section) ?

Well let's test that to see what really happen in timer =)

@XTerminator just because the autosplitter time pauses doesn't mean the actual game time isn't rolling. I've explained before that the IGT begins rolling a few seconds "early" even when the game is "telling" LiveSplit that the game is paused and should not run the LiveSplit IGT. So no, you're probably not just "deleting time". That's why I made the thread to actually time your retries correctly.

Because people were timing retries incorrectly based on the fact the LiveSplit timer is paused... and that's an improper method of timing.

United Kingdom

That's fair enough; my live split timer is acuallu always two seconds behind my IGT, thinking about it after what you said that's probably due to the pauses for retries

i don't understand how an in-game restart works. can somebody explain it to me.

United Kingdom

When you reach certain points you'll see the loading icon in the top left, as soon as you can see that you can pause hit retry and press yes, it will restart you at exactly that point and give you speed boosts. It doesn't work everywhere and some of them done even spawn you at the same place, so it's figuring out which ones work, most of which have been found
