Enter Castle of Warren
Send O.L to Hidden Town (NE Island) to recruit Lans. Draw a Tarot card once liberating the town.
Deploy Lans and send him south of the Southern island to search for a Buried Treasure.
Send O.L to the R.T to liberate and draw another Tarot card.
Send O.L to Warren's Castle.
Upon entering combat, immediately change tactics to "Weak".

After a large group of enemies pass south of O.L, head to the boss.
If you can do it quickly enough you shouldn't loss your liberated town, and it should just be dusk so Sirius will still be human.
Say No and enter combat.
Ensure tactics are set to "Leader", then weak when Sirirs is low.

Send O.L NW all the way to just below the wall surrounding enemy base. Line up with the short section of moat running N-S.
Deploy your second High Sky unit and send them directly west to liberate the shop town.

Send O.L North towards boss (first 4 way cross roads)
Send O.L to Boss.
Immediately use 2  powerful Tarot cards you have, Magician, Devil.

Send O.L to the middle of the map, opening amongst the mountains to Liberate a hidden temple and draw a Tarot card.
You'll recruit Ashia.
Deploy Ashia and use a Summons to being her unit to the O.L unit.
Change the leader of Ashias unit, and swap her into the O.L unit for the wizard (not Warren).
Send Ashias former unit South and a little East to a small spot between the waters edge and a cliff.
Send O.L NE between the mountains (by a single white rock).
Send O.L back west to intercept the Wizard enemy unit. It contains 4 Ghosts which are a great source of Exp, Ali and Cha.
Let Ashia clear out all 4 ghosts then retreat from the battle.
Revert Ashia back to an Amazon then promote her to a Valkyrie.
Send O.L to the Boss.
Use a bunch of Joker items to gain powerful Tarot cards you'll need to beat the boss.
Set tactics to Weak and start using powerful Tarot cards (Justice x 2). Hopefully Ashia and Warren will hit with their magic.

Enter Kastolatian Sea
Send O.L NE, just below a tiny island slightly off the main land.
Deploy secondary high sky unit NW to the large isolated island and place the flag slightly below the most NW single tree to find and liberate a hidden temple. Draw a Tarot card.
Your reputation meter should be high enough (barring any terrible card pulls) to receive the "Brunhild".
Send O.L to the boss. You may need to do some routing to avoid the enemy Cleric unit.
Use a Fool card, a Hermit card is great here.
Warren and Ashia's Bolt spells should clean this up quickly.

Send O.L NW, just slightly above and left of a town with mountains around it. Place flag in river. You'll find a hidden treasure. (Use a sunshine as dusk approaches).
Send O.L more NW, at the edge of the large body of water, slightly west if another town.
When a few enemies are visible send O.L to the boss.
Chariot/ Hermit cards are good options here.

Send O.L to central town inside the second wall (through the opening), liberate the town between the 2 lakes and pull a card.
Say Yes to Tristan and recruit him to your army.
Move O.L over the next southern wall.
Deploy Tristan and use a Summons to bring his unit to the O.L unit.
Equip Tristan with the Brunhild, equip any other strong weapon to Griff.
Change leader of Tristan’s group, and swap him into O.L party for Warren.
Send O.L to Boss.
Have tactics set to leader and allow Tristan to use his back row attack once, retreat and repeat.
Tristan may be able to kill the boss himself, if not, allow Ashia a spell.

Send O.L to liberate town immediately N.E of base.

Put Tristian in the front of the group with Griff

Send high sky unit S, between the mountains near a volcano, below the 4 rocks, but above the single rock, to liberate a hidden temple and receive the Fafhniel.

Move O.L west of the nearby temple to avoid some enemy units.
Send O.L to Boss, equip Tristan with any Electric based weapon if you have one.
Use Fool Card, Star Card. Allow a few rounds of attacks and see if a Hermit is needed.

Equip Tristan with the Fafhniel.
Send O.L directly N to the top of the map into the middle of the body of water, east of the Boss Castle.
After the Samurai unit leaves the boss area, head over and enter the fight!
Use a Fool Card, Star Card, allow for some attack rounds and see if a card (Hermit, Devil) is needed to lower boss HP so Tristan can kill him.

Wait to see who goes first before using any cards. You want the enemy to use her spell first so you can follow up with Star Card.
Follow this with a World Card.
Use Emperor cards as needed to allow for additional attacks to finish the boss off.

Place Tristan back into the Front Row.
Send O.L SW to the point of land that is just below the most westerly island (medium sized with a tiny bit of snow on it’s northern tip) (SW of a Temple)
Keep an eye on the O.L as some enemies like to get a little too close. Do some dodging to avoid encounters.
After the large group of enemies goes by, head to the boss.
Gares FIght
Use a Sun Card, you should be able to just let your units attack to kill Gares.
Pause after the fight and Revive/All Heal and enter the next boss
Rashidi Fight
Use a World Card, followed by a Fool Card, followed by a Star Card.
Allow a few rounds of attacking, use Magician if Tristan won’t be able to kill him on his last attack.
Pause after the fight and put Tristan in back.

Start throwing out the damage cards, Judgement, Justice
Use a heal after a Quake attack (if you survive).

Any% RNG manipulation

The manipulation in the beginning is very precise. In at least one case it's frame perfect. For character creation, there's no good audio or visual cues, so I use LiveSplit to set it up.

First, set your timer to start at -5.03 seconds. You'll hit this when the QUEST logo hits the background and stops moving. Also, do not dismiss the QUEST logo by hitting any buttons. Dismissing it affects the global counter, which determines which seed you get.

In the black screen between the QUEST screen disappearing and the title screen, start mashing. The global counter runs on both the QUEST logo screen and the title screen, along with the entire character creation process. Mashing will ensure that your timer starts at about the same point that you actually select new game.

(I think if you have save files it defaults to continue and not New Game. It shouldn't make a huge difference if you have to move the cursor, it'll just make the timing a little tighter to get to the gender select option)

(I don't have this issue since my cart's battery died a long time ago =P )

Once you hit the naming screen, use ! as your name. Your name also affects which seed you get, and different combinations of characters shift it forward or backward. It's possible that other names will work, but I have not tested any other combinations.

Once you're on the gender select screen, you need to wait until your timer is at 12.1 seconds. If you've done everything the same up to this point, you effectively have a 1 in 6 chance of hitting the correct frame. You'll know if you hit either the correct frame or one frame early if you get Justice as your first card. If the second card is Temperance, you were a frame early. If it's Fool, then you're on seed 75, which is the optimal seed.

Your deck will then be Justice, Fool, Magician, Judgement, Priestess, Devil, and Star. Occasionally the last card will change for reasons I haven't quite figured out. If this happens, reset. The manipulation likely won't work for stage 1.

Your answers to the questions will be: Justice - 1, Fool - 1, Magician - 3, Judgement - 2, Priestess - 1, Devil - 1. This will net you Phantom Lord, which is optimal for any%.

You'll also have bonus stats of +1 HP, +2 STR, +3 AGI, +1 CHA, +2 ALI, and +1 LUK.

Now, once Warren asks you to select the final card, you need to hit the button at 1:16.8 on your timer, then hold A to advance the text. You don't need a second button press to dismiss the final text box. Note that this one is not frame perfect, and has a small amount of leeway. I believe I found it to be 4 frames.

(Also, it don't bother selecting any card except the first one. The choice of card is just an illusion - you'll get the same card regardless of which one you pick)

If you hit everything correct up to this point, you'll be on the seed that will allow the RNG to give you what I get in my runs.

Note that the RNG doesn't move once the world map is loaded, so you don't have to be frame perfect or anything getting into Castle of Warren.

Once in the stage, start mashing during the READY message. You have VERY little leeway in your movement here.

(The RNG thankfully does NOT advance while you're moving the flag around to select a move location. Use that to your advantage to make sure the destination is correct)

You need to land on the very bottom left of Zeltennia. I can't explain the exact spot to move to in text, but with a little bit of practice, you should find your own visual cue easily enough.

If you selected the correct spot, you'll get a Hermit card upon liberation. From there, you need to wait a split second before deploying Lans. If deployed immediately, you won't get the correct item on the island. The delay here is fairly small, but it has to be there.

Once Lans is deployed, menu select the Opinion leader's group again, then wait until dusk fully sets in (ie, when the colors stop changing). At that moment, tell your Opinion Leader's group to move to the temple, landing on the bottom left corner.

If all the movement and timing have been correct, Lans will find a Notos on the south island, and the Opinion Leader will pull a Hanged Man upon liberation, then find a Sigmund as well.

Once the liberation has finished, immediately select the Opinion Leader and move them to Warren's Castle. The fight should proceed in exactly the manner as my video.

Hopefully that's a decent enough explanation of what I'm doing.

New Game Starting Tarot Card Odds

# Introduction

There are 22 Tarot cards in Ogre Battle - the Major Arcana. Starting a new game brings up the iconic scene of being dealt 6 Tarot cards by Warren from the deck and then drawing a 7th bonus card. Can visibly count 16 cards from the deck at the bonus pull, implying duplicate cards in the starting hand are impossible.

With the assumption of perfect RNG, as in, each hand combination is equally likely and one card being delt doesn't bias the odds of the remaining cards, probabilities can be exactly calculated.

That said, the RNG can be manipulated, the starting seed has weak entropy, World can be duplicated on the bonus card in PSX and perhaps every card can in Saturn. The following odds give a good baseline of how much resetting you're apt to do per viable run with no RNG manipulation, else the relative difficulty in finding a starting seed with the cards you want.

I don't think most people care to see [the calculations](https://github.com/aus101/OgreBattle/blob/main/ogrebattle/tarot/simulate/OddsExample.java) using combinatorics and the hypergeometric distribution. Just gimme the numbers!

- Total combinations of 6 cards where order doesn't matter: 74613    
- Total combinations of 7 cards where order doesn't matter: 170544    

These are rookie numbers in Computer Science, allowing generation of all deck combinations in under 1 second that verify the below calculations. They become the denominators with numerators the number of desired combinations.

Odds lower than about 15% are probably worth achieving with RNG manipulation instead for SFC/SNES and Saturn. The PSX RNG is actually much more active and "random" and not likely humanely manipulatable past the first card.

Optimal Answers for Lord Type for All Releases

### INTRODUCTION

### **Answer sets here will result in the right Lord 97.62-100% of the time given each card combination is equally likely. Scroll down if you just want the answers. Answer sets from all other guides only work about 65% of the time.**

This is because sometimes the optimal choice is to give *less* points to your desired Lord in order to reduce the points for the other Lords even more. Given the COMBIN(22,6) = 74613 combinations of 6 cards, brute forcing an answer set [with computer science](https://github.com/aus101/OgreBattle) takes less than 1 second to confirm the probabilities.

100% is only possible with Ice Cloud since the other Lords have at least one question that must award more points to another. There are multiple optimal answer sets for Ianuki and Ice Cloud. The given sets here have the most '1 answers' for fast entry.

If you knew all 6 cards in advance, such as with RNG manipulation, the optimal answers would be more flexible. These answers assume perfect RNG with all combinations equally likely. The RNG is in reality weak in SFC/SNES and Saturn.

### EXPLANATION

It's long been known that the answers to the starting 6 questions by Warren determine which of the Lords you get: Ianuki (named Sonic Strike in PSX), Phantom, Ice Cloud and Thunder. The 3 answers to each Tarot card question award [different points](https://github.com/aus101/OgreBattle/blob/main/ogrebattle/tarot/pojo/TarotQuestions.java) to them. You become the Lord with the highest point total. If there is a tie, the priority goes Ianuki > Phantom > Ice Cloud > Thunder since that's the order in memory. Bonus card does not matter.

Actually, the original SFC release was substantially revised. The [point values](https://github.com/aus101/OgreBattle/blob/main/ogrebattle/tarot/pojo/TarotQuestionsSFC.java) for every card but Magician were changed and reused for all subsequent releases, including English SNES and the Nintendo Power flash cart SFC release. Thus 2 sets of answers are needed: original SFC and all others. The answers for the New 3DS Virtual Console port may have been further revised. TBD.

### ORIGINAL SFC BUG

If you think of the Lords as Warrior (Ianuki), Evil (Phantom), Holy (Ice Cloud) and Beast Master (Thunder) based on ALI and their starting units, the answers actually make some logical sense for all releases but the original SFC. The point values in that besides Magician and World are certainly bugged. The values in the later releases were downshifted for 20 cards. As in, III Empress points are II Priestess in original SFC, IV Emperor points are III Empress in original SFC, V Hierophant are IV Emperor, etc. all the way down to Fool.

As in, Quest realized the points were upshifted by mistake and downshifted to fix in later releases. The World points in the original SFC release are actually about 5x higher than any other card, making it extremely influential for the chosen Lord. In terms of flavor, that makes some sense.

### STARTING UNITS

Each Lord has 3 starting units besides its own. This for both full game and for Fireseal. First place, that is to say your Lord, provides all 3, second place provides the first 2 in their list and third place provides only their first unit. In a full game, the order goes your Lord, Lans, Warren, #1 and #2 and #3, second place #1 and #2, third place #1. The most relevant to speedrunning is the second High Sky unit in Fireseal that comes from the second place Lord.

One answer set is given for Phantom first, Ice Cloud second to get the 2x Tigerman High Sky unit for Fireseal. Is only 61.45% versus 97.62-100% for not caring what second is. That's just how the numbers work. Stricter requirements have fewer possible combinations.

Undead Staff/Sentoul Demon and Undead Ring/Book of the Dead List with Reputation Changes

I tested everything on English SNES. The essential reasons for this guide are making Saradin a Sorcerer or Lich and showing more routing opportunity for evil endings.

Perks of Sorcerer and Lich besides 2 and 3 AoE attacks:

- Sorcerer notably gets Wizard's 2 ranged magic attacks in the front row and Lich gets 2 direct STR-based white attacks, unless he has equipment that overwrites the element.
- Lich has the best elemental resistances in the game and +1 AGI at level up compared to Wizard / Mage / Sorcerer. Note that PSX bug keeps Saradin at Mage resistances and Aisha/Norn with Shaman's.
- Sorcerer recruits Skeleton or Ghost and Lich recruits Wraith or Phantom *anywhere*. Not just at a town, anywhere they are on the map. Level 13 from when Saradin joins at level 15. Note that Galf comes with 2 level 17 Phantoms and 2 level 17 Werewolves.
- Recruited undead use: Fringe viability against Diablo since they dodge everything but Petrify and his white blade attack. Diablo's unit has Weak tactic, keeping the backrow safe for 1st round of combat with 2 undead in front. Else use to lower the average ALI in a liberating unit, if evil routing needs a bit more of a Reputation drop. Note that Norn uses Strong tactic so will heal versus kill undead and World protects against Jihad.

I timed it to be 23 seconds slower than Borgnine trading on English SNES, just from the act of dumping 100 to 40. Diaspola is one of the slowest stages in the game and evil endings besides Devil do not need to clear it. Can go the Tristan path and avoid Mizal at Tundra.

## **Trade Sentoul Demon and Book of the Dead**

- Famously, Borgnine in Anglem after clearing **Diaspola** wants to make a deal. Offers a measly 10,000 goth, then an Undead Staff (STAFF), then a Stone of Dragos for any Sentoul Demon (DEMON) you come across. If you refuse all 3 offers, you lose 5 Reputation points and this is repeatable to drop 100 to 0. No Reputation change for trading.
- In **Sharom** [Border] at the shop of Valna, Badista will forcibly trade an Undead Ring (UNDEAD) for a Book of the Dead (LEXICON), which he claims is buried somewhere on the continent. Surprise, there's 2 of them and they aren't buried. No Reputation change for trading.

### **Undead Staff**

- Yushis' stage **Antalia** after clearing, visit the boss castle.
- Recruit Galf by defeating him at **Antanjyl** with 0 to 40 Reputation, 0 to 30 Alignment on the Opinion Leader and possessing Brunhild. Pops the question. Brunhild can be equipped or not, just have, but lose when recruiting. Also lose 15 Reputation and 25 Alignment (!) on Opinion Leader. After that, visit Powant N for an Undead Staff, Undead Ring and Blood Kiss (BLOOD)! No additional Reputation loss. Refusing Galf grants you +5 Reputation, +5 Alignment and Brunhild is kept.

### **Sentoul Demon**

- Liberate Vyer in **Pogrom Forest** with 0 to 59 Reputation to get the Evil Censor. Trade it for a Sentoul Demon with Toad at Para. Both steps must be done **before clearing** the stage. No Reputation change for trading. Can still get the Quicksilver after clearing with 70+ Reputation, necessary for the best ending.
- Posha's sidequest on **Diaspola**, which must be done **before clearing** and for the best ending. Liberate Somyul with 45+ Reputation and, interestingly, Opinion Leader with 55+ Alignment. Agree for +3 Reputation. Can save a few seconds by paying 70,000 goth to buy the Beehive from the shop instead of taking the free one from the hidden temple. Revisit Somyu for the Sentoul Demon and +3 Reputation.
- Rauny's stage **Valley of Kastro**, visit Felgahnna after clearing in the top left section. Have 25-50 Reputation, inclusive, to be offered a question. Say Yes to the Thief to get a Sentoul Demon and lose 5 Reputation. Say No for no change and can revisit and answer again.
- **Fort Allamoot**, visit Killig Abal after clearing, which is the nearest city. Have 60-79 Reputation, inclusive, to get a Sentoul Demon. 80+ is a Black Lotus (LOTUS) that sells for 44500. No Reputation change.
- Fogel's Stage Shiguld / **Ruined City**, visit Mupan after clearing. No reputation change.
- **Zeteginea** the second to last stage, visit El' Keda after clearing. No reputation change.

### **Undead Ring**

- See Undead Staff for recruiting Galf.
- Fogel's Stage Shiguld / **Ruined City**, liberate Dallu Sarram **before clearing** to get the Dragon's Jewel. No Reputation change. Don't sell it to Toad at the shop Kalishinpi. After clearing, return to Dallu Sarram and agree to trade it for an Undead Ring. If you refuse, you lose 3 Reputation and can repeat infinitely to drop 100 to 0. No Reputation change if you agree. If you sold it somehow, can buy it back at the shop for 150,000 goth after clearing.

### **Book the Dead**

- Tristan's stage **City of Malano**, visit the boss castle after clearing. No reputation change.
- Slust's stage, **Musplem**, visit Segejin after clearing. No Reputation change.

### **RNG Manipulation**

Completely defeating a non-boss unit, including a neutral encounter, has a 1 in 10 chance of dropping a consumable item. This is irrespective of LUK. Staff and Ring are among these 32 items but they're more like consolation prizes to Dream Crown for Princess or a Trade Ticket.
