1.17 is likely on it's way within the next 2 months or so and I wanted to hear other peoples' opinions on whether or not 1.16 should be it's own category when 1.17 comes out or whether 1.16 and 1.17 runs should compete in the same category.

If the category is different and includes totally different strategies then yes

No point separating them. Nothing about the route is gonna change.

Nah its not gonna be a big enough change but I can see there being another separation several updates in the future, maybe like a 1.16-1.22 kinda thing like 1.9-1.15 I doubt there will be a significant change until that point

i feel like all versions should be separated, like versions before 1.14. but it is up to the mods to separate them

Isn't the stronghold much different in 1.17 though? Could be wrong but that's what I've heard.

Also, what counts as different enough for separation?

Thats just extra work for them but would be interesting for sure

if the 1.17 makes it harder for the runners, then they will just remain playing on 1.16. the mods wont separate them. the mods will, though, if the update changes the game in a more efficient way.

At some point mojang will (hopefully) fuck up and we can beat the game fast on some future version

Maybe, because you might be able to find ores faster. That doesn't really affect sub 40 runs, but if your above that you might try mining because your inexperienced speedrunner. Also, you might be able to find the stronghold faster or slower because there are more caves that could have an exposed stronghold and also strongholds might generate a lot lower than 1.16.

if the game is the same no, independly of minor factors you can those your best version, but the categories are separated because of changes of the main idea to beat the game for example the adding of the trades with pigmans makes it the main way of getting enderpeals, so is like playing a diferent game than 1.8 now if they add that you can get enderpeals from a cow with grass then yes xd

As for now its too early to know that. When 1.17 releases and there is some new op way to obtain pearls, they may seperate it. If nothing changes it will stay with 1.16.
