Currently, the way runs are timed on Karlson has a problem. Normally, timing is done using real time. However, you use in game time if you have the autosplitter. This may not seem like a big deal at first, but there is a flaw with having two timing methods. Let's say that I had a time of 1:59 igt, and 2:01 real time. (My time isn't this good I suck, but this is hypothetical). Normally, this would put me in 19th place, just ahead of Handymail. But what if I didn't use the autosplitter? Now my run would use real time, not in game time. So even though my in game time is faster than Handymail's, and my real time is faster than Handymail's real time, my run is lower than his on the leaderboard. Now, you may just say that "its easy to install livesplit and the autosplitter", so just do that. But that doesn't solve the problem. I shouldn't be able to use an external tool to save time. And it doesn't fix the run that I already have (i dont actually have a 159 this is hypothetical ok). So, I suggest that the timing should be done exclusively IGT from now on. (runs that were done RTA could be grandfathered in and stay on the leaderboards, or you could retime them all. Or you could just ignore this post, I guess) "But how will we find IGT without the autosplitter" The thing is, the autosplitter isn't even necessary to find what the in game time is. You can just look at the final time on each level completed, and add them all together. I tested this on several runs, and the sum of the level times is always the same as the final time on the autosplitter. And if you pause and restart in the middle of a level, you can just find the time they paused the game, and add that to the time. So the autosplitter makes runs easier to verify, but isn't necessary to find IGT. A few other games use timing methods like this, where you just add the level times together (sonic 2 and mike tyson's punch out for example), so this would probably work, and would eliminate problems like this from happening.
The autosplitter is a necessity for IGT because otherwise it would be much more difficult to tell if a run is spliced or not. Anyone could just slap an RTA timer on top of a spliced run (or not use a timer at all) and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference if someone has basic video editing abilities. On top of that, using external timers is standard among the majority of top speed games and they are not difficult to download and setup. The amount of effort it takes to setup the autosplitter for each runner is preferable to the time spent adding every time up manually and then having to spend even more time than usual making sure the run isn't spliced for every submission if we were to calculate IGT for people not using the autosplitter.
That's my perspective as a prolific runner of this game first, and as a verifier secondarily. Maybe Jannik will think differently but idk.
Personally, I find it hard to click the next button in any%, because you can miss the button very easily, losing time in a way that is not based off of skill. The IGT eliminates losing time to missing to click a button with your mouse. I do see your point though, because it is a lot easier to download and use something for RTA.
Tbh you just need to get better at clicking the Next button in that case, that's how I did it back when all runs were RTA. You only lose about 5.5s if you take an entire half second each time you click next, but you can get it down to only losing about 2.5-3s by just immediately going from level to level which is indeed a skill albeit not the focus of the game lol
I think that times should still be based on igt but it would be cool to have a second option that people have the choice to add where it will show the rta time. would be cool to see the comparison but still keeps igt times for rankings
eh... retiming every new god damn run for igt is a pain in the ass. not only will we need to edit every run there already is on the leaderboard(from rta to igt) , we will also need to retime almost all runs on the leaderboard.
Apart from that ..if we just allow people to do Igt runs without autosplitter ,then no one will use the autosplitter since you can just do it without. This might not seem like a problem , but the autosplitter also works as a way of making it harder for splicing.(like sirty already mentioned)
And no ...i dont wanna kill the ears of people by forcing them to listen to the in game music to detect splicing.
... "RTA could be grandfathered in" so that means we ignore old runs? ..well that partly removes the need to retime them all but we still need to look into each one bcs we dont know if they are igt or rta. that means the ones with autosplitter will be labeled as rta bcs we either need to select the default as igt or rta.
Oh and i think this game has reached its peak ..kinda weird to have the change now.. but tbh thats never a fully valid point.
in short : main reason is that we use the autosplitter for verification, making it easier for the runner and making it easier for the mods.
"I think that times should still be based on igt but it would be cool to have a second option that people have the choice to add where it will show the rta time. would be cool to see the comparison but still keeps igt times for rankings"
great... not only would we need to retime every run to igt... no also rta too ...haha
what we could do is : force them to either
have autosplitter or have ingame music on...but i dont want people to have bleeding ears.
i guess that could be another way to force ppl to use autosplitter.. but it doesnt remove all the work that will be necessary if we go over to igt.
Karlson is going to have a tournament! This year we're counting with 32 competitors - 4 times the amount of last year's tourney! All matches for round one have been scheduled as follows (all times are in the GMT timezone):
