Beware of replay breaks for replay footage speedruns (Remake)

If you prefer to reload save restore points to get a better battle turnout or undo a building mistake (**without starting the mission over**) ***AND*** you prefer to submit runs for the Remake (which we currently only allow r5503 and r6720 submissions), be aware of "**replay breaks**".

The following 30 second clip demonstrates a __replay break__ - when the replay only works up to a certain point and then the replay player essentially crashes.

***There is no fix*** for a "broken replay", but you can ***salvage a part of your play*** (provided that you **save often**).

* Reload the save restore point ***before*** that time that you have in your save reloads menu.
* Do some actions like move soldiers (*don't just let the game run!*)
* Save the game.
* Go watch the updated (test) replay in the replay viewer.  (***To save time, it helps to fast forward all the way through at x100 speed or more***.  See https://www.speedrun.com/kam/guide/og85b to fast forward at a rate more than **x10**.)
* If the replay doesn't break (successfully completes), then you're **OK**.
* But if the replay is still broken, then you need to reload the save restore point ***before*** the first one you chose.
* This ***should*** be a safe resuming point.  But be careful to **save often** and **test the replay often** on maps where you experience replay breaks more often than others.

Lastly, if you are interested in doing TAS runs (see https://www.speedrun.com/kam/guide/p0hnk ), then be aware of saving *too often*, because if a replay breaks, you may have to do the above procedure with ***3 or more*** close in proximity save restore points (like if you save *every second or so* . . . which IS POSSIBLE with a TAS run!)



**Potential Causes of Replay Breaks**

*Even the programmers of the Remake ("Remake Dev, Remake Developers") are unsure exactly what causes replay breaks (and there can be more than one cause, depending on the map that is being played), but the following is a list of potential causes.*

* There have been theories that the autosave feature (which can be disabled in the ***Options*** Menu under ***Gameplay:***) can cause replay breaks.
* There is solid evidence that maps with accompanying script files (like ***Invasion*** in the example video above) cause replay breaks
* Hotkey presses (see https://www.speedrun.com/kam/guide/2wlqt ) may cause replay breaks.
* Reducing the game time speed during gameplay by a large factor (slower than 1/9 normal game clock tick rate) (see https://www.speedrun.com/kam/guide/p0hnk ) can also be a cause.  (I know of that first-hand, with my TAS 4m28s TSK 20 win!)

* First of all, these attachments **ARE NOT FOR THE STEAM VERSION**, only KaM Remake r6720!  (Most missions *probably* work in r5503 as well, but if you're new to the game, ***please play in r6720*** if r5503 crashes from a particular map!)

* Second, to avoid confusion, please create a new (temporary) folder and drag all of the folders ***(which are currently)*** in the **Map** (and/or **MapMP** folder -- if you want to speedrun a co-op map with someone) into there.  And ***then*** put the maps of your interest in the (now *BLANK* folder).  **BUT**, if you're positive that you have all of the maps that you want to speedrun already with the exception of a few, feel free to just add the "new" maps to your collection.  It's your call, but you will see that the maps in these attachments were fixed.

* For example, if they were missing:
 - (a) a storyline that was actually written by the map author (but for some reason "didn't make it" in the map-viewer menu in the Remake),
- (b) instructions,
- (c) had some scripting error messages, or
- (d) were named something strange (like an individual campaign mission from *The Federation of Neryn* is labelled as "VAS" rather than "TFON"), 

All of those issues have been taken into consideration before compiling these **Zip Files**.

* In addition, see the short video in **[this guide](https://www.speedrun.com/kam/guide/7613i)**, as the procedure shown in there is pretty much what the below writing is asking you to do!  (For a TLDR!)

# Campaigns

* These are all of the __single player__ **Campaigns** (see the Co-op Campaigns attachment for the Co-op campaigns) that we accept runs from.

* There are NINE folders (campaigns) in this zip file.  Within each of the NINE folders are many other folders (individual missions of the campaigns).  Copy or drag ***those*** folders (within each of the NINE folders) into the **Map** folder which is in the KaM Remake folder on your PC.

* Once you do this, you may ***skip*** around as you please . . . to speedrun any mission of any of these NINE campaigns without having to use cheats to skip building missions (OR having to play through battle missions) to get to the desired one.

* Because the purpose of this attachment is to help you to ***skip*** missions, all sound files which were strictly the narration for the beginning of a mission (e.g., TSK's mission narrations) **have been omitted** from the maps (to reduce attachment size), as you won't be able to listen to them (during gameplay) anyway.

* There are **A LOT** of miscellaneous file types (.libx, .dat, etc.) inside of each of the mission folders.  Leave all of them in the folders.  Just move the folders (e.g., TSK20, OFL11, TNL14, etc.) to the **Map** folder which is in the Remake folder!

* Lastly, several of these campaign individual mission folders that you get from other sources may have a ***different acronym*** than you see in this attachment.  (But these campaigns ARE THE SAME as those!)  All acronyms in **THIS** attachment abbreviate every word in the campaign name AS EXPECTED for an __acronym__.  For example, **T**he **F**ederation **o**f **N**eryn is abbreviated as **VAS** in r6720, but it is abbreviated literally as **TFON** in this attachment.  (This was done to minimize confusion, nothing more!)

# Single Maps

* So there are TWO folders in this zip file.  Within each of the TWO folders are many other folders.  Copy or drag ***those*** folders (within each of the TWO folders) into the **Map** folder which is in the KaM Remake folder.

* ***Most*** map author's names will appear in the **Play Single Map** menu, but if they are not there, they will be in the description/storyline (in the left window).

* Please **read** the descriptions for each map, as they may contain hints or instructions (AND maybe even storylines, to make things interesting!).

# Co-op Campaigns

How to do a TAS run (for the Remake categories)

- TAS - "Tool Assisted Speedrun" applies to KaM as well.  In particular, we can actually ***slow down the game's clock*** during gameplay to allow us to multitask (build a town ***AND*** go and fight simultaneously, for example).

- Besides sheer entertainment, this allows us to see (in theory) how a VERY SMART AI (on our behalf) would fight against our computer AI opponents.

- If any one of us completes an entire campaign (to earn the Any% privilege  https://www.speedrun.com/kam/thread/mwumz ) , we can lower the theoretical win-time for that campaign.  Think of it, imagine if a VERY SMART computer can complete the TSK campaign in ***under an hour***!  Is that possible?  Well, that's what the TSK (Remake)(TAS) category is all about!

- Sounds too good to be true for KaM speedrun submissions?  We have a TAS category for missions just for this!  But you ***may NOT*** (and it's easy to tell when you do) submit such runs under a Remake category that doesn't have "(TAS)" attached to the end of the category name.

KaM TAS runs should be considered different than (must be distinguished from) "normal" runs, because ***it's not humanly possible*** to do multiple commands in one game clock tick when playing at x1 (normal) pace.  But when slowing down the game time speed, it is!

- You can clearly see that there is **lag** in the movements of soldiers in the 7m57s video versus ***continuous flow*** in the 4m28s video.

- In short, yes we ALLOW you to do this (slowing down the game's speed during gameplay and then restoring it to watch the replay after gameplay) for screen-recording replays, BUT only for the TAS run type.  We can easily tell if you do use KaM Remake TAS and attempt to submit it for a non-TAS category.  **We will especially look at submissions which are potential WR breakers for subtle details!**

- **You will be disqualified for future runs** (not to mention that the run you submitted will also of course be rejected), if you attempt to submit a TAS in a non-TAS category. 

- If you do this by mistake (which should only happen *once* if AT ALL!), you may plead your case, and we will submit your run under the ***proper*** category, but ***please be fair to others***!  Don't attempt to submit a TAS run on a human (non-TAS) leaderboard!

- All in all, KaM Remake TAS is a *whole other gaming experience* that you have not experienced before which will give you a deeper understanding of how KaM's AI works and can help you to submit better non-TAS runs (from the ***knowledge*** that you gain from having experience playing at the "microscopic level")!

How to use the Market Building (for select maps in KaM Remake only)

The Market building is a building which was **NOT** seen in the original game or in the Steam version.

It's a building where you can literally trade any resource for another . . . but at certain (set) proportions.  You can imagine how useful this building could be if you struggle to keep resources balanced.  (Or it can help "protect" you from a mission failure due to being one timber too short for your first sawmill, for example.)

Below is a table which shows the "market trade values" (where what you see in the top row is what you get from trading what is in the left column).

(**Note** r6720 and r5530 are the only acceptable remake versions to do speedruns with!  Any later versions will be rejected!)

And, although the original KaM Remake Developers (Lewin and Krom) created the Market building, as you can see both in this article itself (and in the comments), they discourage heavy use of the market.  Because it's more efficient to create a resource the default way.  https://www.kamremake.com/devblog/how-do-we-know-market-prices-are-right/  However, in select maps (like ***Two Sides*** mentioned above), the market is REQUIRED to use (and even exploit) in order to win.  Krom and Lewin meant that, if given a choice to use the market or not to produce a resource, only use the market to balance resources.  But you are doing yourself a disservice if you want to try to replace default production chains with a "shortcut" through the market.

Rules

Firstly, to make sure that we are all on the same page, please see **[this post/guide](https://www.speedrun.com/kam/guide/w8dc2)**, as it contains download links to ALL single maps AND ALL campaign missions listed on this site.  If you are sure you have the maps that you want to speedrun already, that's fine.  But if you're unsure, it's there for you!

Secondly, TAS (tool-assisted speedrun) is mentioned quite a bit on this page.  [This guide](https://www.speedrun.com/kam/guide/p0hnk) explains what a TAS is in KaM.

# **Rules for (Normal) Runs of Campaign Missions in Steam Version**

**Objective:**  Finish an individual mission of the campaign you have selected as fast as you can.

A video showing your entire play ***and*** your end-game statistics screen is **required** for run submissions.



[**Rule 2**]


You are allowed to save, reload, *fast forward* and/or pause during the run, (because, as stated above, it is your **endgame statistics time** that is counted), ***BUT*** you ***must***:

* Show the end-game statistics at the end of the video, otherwise your run will be **rejected** automatically.
* Show your entire play (there is no need to spend time editing out saves -- unless you want to), not just the end-game statistics!)

[**Rule 4**]


It is tricky to calculate in-game time (IGT) down to the *second* in versions that are not the Remake, as the endgame statistics screen only shows the completion time rounded down to the nearest minute.  However, we *can* calculate this.  It is good if we do, so that we can compare times with the Remake's best run times.  **But more importantly, we can separate two players who have completed a mission in the same minute**.

* So we apologize for those who actually are willing (or have actually already gone through the trouble of) playing an entire campaign in one sitting, but it's overkill for this game in particular.



# **Rules for (TAS) Runs in Steam Version**

N/A.  Just ignore the "TAS" tab when selecting an individual mission of a campaign of the Steam Version!  Sorry about that.





# **Rules for (Normal) Runs of Campaign Missions in KaM Remake**

**Objective:**  Finish an individual mission of the campaign you have selected as fast as you can.

You must record the full-window of the Remake in your screen recording to **show which version of the Remake you played in**.

* **Accepted Remake versions**:  r5503 and r6720.  (r6720 is the preferred version, if you don't already have existing runs in r5503. )
* You ***may not*** use a later version than r6720.  We apologize, but the single player campaigns in later versions are not sufficiently tested for single player.
* When Rey's final version comes out ***and is well-tested***, we will allow that version as well.  (But until things stop changing, there is no way we will be able to verify with certainty the legitimacy/fairness of a run compared to other Remake versions.)



[**Rule 2**]


For LIVE game play (where we can both see and **hear** the commands that you do -- NOT a replay), you are allowed to save, reload, *fast forward* and/or pause during the run, because it is your **endgame statistics time** that is counted.
*  You ***must*** show the end-game statistics at the end of the video, otherwise your run will be **rejected** automatically.
* But you must also show the entire play as well, not just the end-game statistics.



[**Rule 3**]


If you choose to show a replay (rather than *LIVE* play), then you ***must***:
1. Show the replay.
2. ***Go and reload the save which shows your **exact** win time (down to the second!).***
* *REASON*:  the duration of the replay is almost never the same as the actual time the mission was completed.  **If you fail to do this for replay submissions, they will be *rejected***!

[**Rule 4**]


A video showing your entire play ***and*** your end-game statistics screen is **required** for run submissions.

* If you choose to show a replay (rather than LIVE play, where we can hear and see all of the commands you do), then you ***must*** show every part of the map at which something significant happens.

*  You **may NOT** simply zoom out to the max to "technically show" what's going on on the entire map, as we need to (and would like to) see things up close (the default zoom distance) for verifying purposes.

* As an ***extreme example*** of desired game coverage, see the second half of this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srP9q3gYcOs&t=4m54s.  (Usually a speedrun will not be THAT involved as to show everything separately like that, but we will not object to in-depth coverage)

* You may use a **split screen** (if you like video editing) if you wish to show up-close what's happening on different parts of the map simultaneously for maps, but simply making the video longer, showing each part of the map (where something significant happens) part-by-part is acceptable.

* You ***MAY*** play the replay at a speed greater than x1 (x3, x6, x10), but for short missions, **x3** is preferred and **x10** for longer missions is preferred (but you need to slow it down to **x3** or maybe even **x1** at times when a lot is happening.



[**Rule 5**]


You **may NOT** modify the map in the map-editor in *any way*, including (but not limited to):
* Changing the winning conditions
* Modifying the landscape/terrain
* Modifying AI players home base
* Modifying the map's script file (if it has one)

(We will know if you do, and we will **reject** your runs and disqualify you for future submissions!)



[**Rule 6**]


You **may NOT** slow down the game time speed in __normal runs__ as you are allowed to with __TAS runs__.  Submit those type of runs as a TAS (rather than a Normal) run (to be fair).





# **Rules for (TAS) Runs of Campaign Missions in KaM Remake**

A __TAS__ is a tool assisted speedrun.


**Objective:** Complete a mission of the campaign you have selected as fast as you can by using the aid of slowing down the game time during game-play.

* See [this guide](https://www.speedrun.com/kam/guide/p0hnk) on how to do this and why it might be interesting (despite that such runs **CANNOT** be counted as ***Normal*** runs).

But here are a few comments about doing TAS runs.
* This makes it possible to control ***many*** things at once which are *impossible* to do at normal game speed.

* Obviously, ***this is only for the Remake***, as this cannot be done in the Steam version or the original game.

* This allows for ***significantly shorter win times*** for missions and is cool to see, but such runs only belong in **this** category and ***not*** the regular remake category!

* All rules for the regular remake version apply to this as well.  The only difference is slowing down the game time clock speed is acceptable here.





# **Rules for (Normal) Runs of Single Maps in KaM Remake**

The same rules for **Normal Runs of Campaign Missions** apply to **Normal Runs of Single Maps**.





# **Rules for (TAS) Runs of Single Maps in KaM Remake**

You have two avenues for doing speedruns in *The Shattered Kingdom* (TSK) and *The Peasants Rebellion* (TPR) campaigns on modern day computers:  **The Steam Version** and **The Remake**.

# **Cheats**

First of all, why would you want to use cheats?  To skip missions?  Well, skipping missions in order to do speedruns of a mission of your choice ***is very understandable*** (time is precious)!  Be sure to see [this guide](https://www.speedrun.com/kam/guide/7613i), as it explains how you can skip missions in the Remake (with **far less trouble**!).   

But here are the cheats (only applicable to missions where you have a storehouse -- ***there are no cheats for battle missions like***:  TSK 03, TSK 06, TSK 10, TSK 13, TSK 17, TSK 19, TPR 08, etc.)


## **For the Remake**

* Left-click of those items in the Store House Building shown in the following image (**in sequence from left to right, top to bottom**).

* In addition, also left-click on the horse resource (bottom-center) to obtain 10 of every resource with every left-click on it.
* In addition, to complete a mission (with a storehouse, that is!), finally, click on the fish (last resource in the storehouse image).

Additionally, there is a [hack/bug](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LeUnVa4ed_k&t=1m52s) for the original game (which you ***are NOT allowed to use*** in speedruns).  *.  But there is also a [builder glitch](https://www.speedrun.com/kam/guide/wljut) which you ***ARE allowed to use*** in speedruns).




# **Steam Version Vs Remake**

The following isn't an *exhaustive* list, but I am sure this list will be update (in time):

## **The Remake**
* Has a Zoom (hold down the Ctrl key (Windows)/Cmd key (Mac) and turn the mouse wheel of your mouse).
* Gives you a greater command of your army.
* Is ***much more*** compatible with modern day computers.
* **Has a replay feature!**  (Once you save a game, you may go to the replay menu and find it).
* Allows you to save a mission with a custom save name.
* Allows you to have ***an unlimited*** number of save restore points!
* Shows your win time (in KaM time, not RTA/real time) down to the ***second*** rather than just to the hour and minute.
* Has a map editor (for editing existing maps or **to create your own**).
* Has three more campaigns than TPR (Steam):  *The Federation of Neryn* (10 Missions), *An Empire Destroyed* (12 Missions), *On Foreign Lands* (11 Missions).
* Has a market building (allowed in select maps) to help balance resources and/or fix otherwise irreversible mistakes with resource usage (e.g., running one timber too short to continue a mission, etc.)  See [How to use the Market Building](https://www.speedrun.com/kam/guide/3ixr0) for more details.
* Has **hotkeys**.  You can assign a building a hotkey. For example, *The Peasants Rebellion* mission 1, you need to consistently train new recruits from the schoolhouse and equip them in the barracks. You can simply click on the building, press and hold down Ctrl (Windows) or Cmd (Mac), and press on the number (1-9) you would like to assign to that building. This allows you to select those buildings by pressing on that same number key from wherever you are viewing the map, *even if you are on the other side of the map controlling your troops*. This will increase your productivity (and hence decrease your time). You can assign groups of your units with numbers too. **When you want to assign a different troop (or building) with a number that you assigned to another troop/building already, it will override the previous assignment**.

## **Steam Version**
* The AI's militia, axe fighters, sword fighters, and barbarians do the **Storm Attack** when they are in pursuit of your decoy bowmen.  This was **NOT** implemented in the Remake.
* Has an AI who builds its own towns better than the Remake (e.g., TSK 09, TSK 14, TSK 15, TSK 16, etc.)
* Has the Town Hall building (for hiring/training unique units such as the warrior/barbarian).  This makes missions like *The Peasants Rebellion* (TPR) Mission 9 ***much easier***!

Timing for KaM Remake

We will continue to count the in-game time (IGT) from the end screen statistics in the Remake.

However, please be sure and read the rules before submitting a run!

* One thing that may not be obvious to some just starting to play the remake, but if you save the game before (or after) you win a mission, you can watch your play via a **replay**.

* **Replays are acceptable** for runs (which is probably preferred for those who reload saves -- also acceptable (see the rules under any Remake category!)), but if you choose to film a replay for a speedrun submission (rather than LIVE play, where we can both see and hear the commands that you do), then you must:

1. Show the replay.
2. Go and reload the save which shows your exact win time (down to the second!).

***REASON***: the duration of the replay is almost never the same as the actual time the mission was completed. If you fail to do this for replay submissions, they will be rejected!

Timing for Original and Steam Versions (for TSK and TPR campaigns)

You can see in the first post of the following thread how we will time TSK and TPR campaign missions played in the Steam version (and/or the Original game and/or its patches).  Simply put (but please see that post for more details), we multiply RTA by 0.92 to convert the run to KaM in-game time.
