(Question) How to be a good leaderboard moderator?

I want to be a better leaderboard moderator and want to hear from other moderators about their ideas / opinion on how to be a good leaderboard moderator. Thank you.

I'm sure there was a very recent thread with the same question, but I can't find it. First you should read the moderation-rules in the knowledge base, and act accordingly to them.

I found this old thread that can give several tips on setting up a new leaderboard, setting up an optional theme, and the moderating part: https://www.speedrun.com/The_Site/thread/qkvjz

I would add that you should have good knowledge of the games you are moderating and their rules; so you could be able to verify runs, and help other people if they have any questions or problems. You should have at least one speedrun in games you moderate.

As for "mod-farming" - you should moderate games because you care about them, or in some games because "no else will do it"; but don't try to get moderator for games just to buff your number of games.

Please make sure all Twitch videos are HIGHLIGHTS and not Past Broadcasts. I don't see anywhere where Mods are advised about this, and it's crazy to me how many submission videos seem to be missing from this site because the Broadcast has expired 2 weeks after the SRcom submission.

A lot of stuff I would say has already been covered here, so I'll try my best to give more advice.

  1. Try to have comprehensive rules for games. Specify things like timing start and stop, if there is a load remover/autosplitter, tell people to use it, mention any banned glitches or tricks, and tell people what video platforms are and aren't allowed (for example, no twitch past broadcasts because they aren't permanent video). Also, fill out both the category rules and the game rules, I often see games that have either or both of these fields empty.

  2. Make yourself available to be contacted. Keep forum notifications on, and check your dms regularly. If someone has a question or concern about the board, you need to be easy to contact so everything can get sorted. This means being active on the site, or at least turning on email notifications for messages, forums, and pending runs. I'd also recommend adding more socials to your profile if possible. You only need two, but it can't hurt to have more.

  3. Other people have said this, but definitely read the moderation rules. They are important and dictate how moderators should behave. If you want to be a good mod, follow these rules. Also make sure that you are retiming runs properly.
