Hello,
I enjoy SRC and have played it for half a decade now (this is my Alt, my main's acc has maxed out storage and can't receive a verification email to log in)
But one thing I've missed is that there are no accomplishments set by the community, no "do this and receive this achievement". That would increase player activity by tenfold and it's very cool if the community is creating the achievements themselves.
I am aware that there exist other websites like Retroachievements or Exophase, but I find them pretty lacking in both players and non-noob-ish achievements. Steam or XBox perform this well, but no Nintendo game or Flash game has such a thing for example. In any case, they are not speedrun related. No "achieve Top 20 in 5 ILs", no "Be the WR Holder of the 3 Series Games", I find some communities creating these titles themselves and denying the title to a top runner for fun.
Other websites have these, like Cyberscore.me.uk, although they are default goals set up by the website itself to increase engagement. Leaving a community some level of customization could become magical.
Even default goals made by the website would be useful and fun enough.
It strucks me as odd that Speedrun.com isn't capitalizing on something so simple, while its competitors are. I can see how it's not necessary, but I can also see how it would add to the experience.
I hope it's taken into account
To be honest, I actually like the idea of creating and handing out achievements. I've wrote my own for a few games and I found it very fun. It's a good way to set goals for runners to work toward or alternative challenges for people to try.
achievements for src just remind me of the people who have asked for src to add a world record counter on their profile or something along those lines.
the website is to track your times and compare them to others so it doesnt really belong here. series wide or single game specific achievements could make sense though, like an achievement for being wr holder for the main category on all series games. but just like with the wr counter thing, the games on this site are very different. a wr on 64 is going to be really really hard but a wr on some game with only one run on the boards will likely not be.
@SioN my google account has maxed out storage, because I uploaded several movies to Google drive. If you max out the storage you can't receive any mails, including verification emails to log in SRC, until you delete stuff to make space.
I can't access my original account unless I delete my movies and shows, I'm not doing that. There is no other method to verify my identity I think
I guess picturing this account as an Alt acc is wrong, this is the only account I can access so there is no "Alternate" account, because I have no choice. If I could access both accounts and I had a choice, then I would have an account I could alternate to, but I don't have a choice.
@honu_tx okay mods give me a couple of days to figure it out and I'll delete this one, I have to move a bunch of records from this acc to the other one
Once I've moved the submissions, which I believe I can do that, I'll try to gain access to the old account somehow
A lot of speedrunning communities give out discord roles to people who have certain times in certain categories, and it's a fun way to encourage people to run different categories or improve their times. I think an "achievement system" could do something similar and be a fun addition to the site.
@SioN that is, in my opinion, the ideal solution if you have both the financial means and the technical know-how.
The easier, simpler alternative is to move your movies to another file hosting or video hosting site. Coincidentally, there is another thread on the sub-forum frontpage where we discussed this issue, I mentioned I use VidGuard (no storage limits, which you might be interested in), but there might be others that also suit your needs.
