Moving to NES, trying to figure out how to do audio.
Esperanto

So, I'm finally moving to hardware. First up NES. But I've ran into an audio puzzle I haven't quite figured out.

Using the I-O Data, I can capture video/audio from the console. Great. Component splutter sends the signal to the capture card and to a TV I play with. The I-O Data obviously has a delay. So I want to record the game music/video through it and keep it synchronized.

Fine and dandy. But I also want to hear audio from the game while I play. Well, the capture device delays it, so can't listen to the audio from the computer. I can't have the TV blare the game audio, or else the mic pics it up, then I get two bits of audio being recorded; the normal one and the delayed bit from the TV. I could plug a headset into the TV to hear the audio without recording it for a second time; but then I can't hear the sounds on the computer (like the alerts on OBS). So I'm sitting here thinking, like, do I need some sort of mixer to collect both audio and send it to one headset? That's the only option that makes sense to me at the moment, but I bring it all up to see what other people do.

I appreciate the input.

Well I just spent 45+ min typing up 3 different ways to do this and then though of a better way with the Windows 10 Audio Pipeline

You will need to purchase some extra hardware its not expensive (Amazon, E-Bay, Ali Express) they will all have what you need (Maybe even your local shopping center as these are quite common parts (or used to be))(Usually cheaper online though)

You will need an RCA Splitter and RCA to 1/8th

Female To Male RCA Splitter: (Cord Suggested to make it easier to plug into the PC and Recording Device) https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41%2BxkdbK3HL._AC_SX425_.jpg

Male RCA to Female 1/8th: (One without a cord on it is ok too) https://ae01.alicdn.com/kf/Hfb8f7ce178d747ca88010efd116b92b25/RCA-to-3-5MM-Audio-TS-Adapter-3-5mm-1-8-Mono-Plug-Male-to-RCA.jpg_q50.jpg

Plug the Splitter into the Audio Plug then plug one of the Audio Plugs into the Recording Device and plug the other RCA Audio Plug into the 1/8th Adapter. Then Plug this into your computers MIC IN port.

You will now need to go into Windows Sound Settings

Start>Sound Settings (type this in) Then inside there go to the Sound Control Panel link (Right Hand Side)

Once inside your Sound Control Panel click on the Recording Tab Next find your MIC IN (that you just plugged in) and Right Click and go to Properties Next go to the Listen Tab and check the Box 'Listen To This Device'

  • I then suggest you PIPE it to your Headphones ONLY as this will make it so that you don't have the risk of double game audio being recorded on accident. -- To do so Just select your Headset from the DropDown box under that Check Box that you selected 'Listen to This Device'

Next step is to make sure that you DO NOT have your new MIC in enabled in OBS as that will cause your game sounds to be doubled.

This is the cheapest and most uncomplicated way to accomplish what you want that I can think of.

Hope this helps.

I appreciate it. I think I got an idea down for this to work.

Digital Headphone -> Stereo conversion from computer. There is a Stereo out on my TV. Connect both to this guy here: https://www.newegg.com/rolls-corporation-mx51s/p/0ZK-01BP-00003?Item=9SIA4P02C38113 Then Headphone in. All relevant audio from both sources should come in, without affecting the audio recording of the capture card. Then, I'll just have to use a separate microphone to run to the computer, and then I think that should take care of it.

Thanks for the advice.

That can work too, much more costly. Side Note: Be aware they usually want a "Line Level" or Lower when using a mixer. My suggestion is if you get clipping or it sounds bad, remove your 1/8th inch to RCA cable from your headphone out and put it in the Line Out as headphone out may be way to HOT for your input on the mixer. Info About Line Level - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Line_level

Good Luck, let me know if you have any more questions I will do what I can to help :)
