Since 2024 is 2 days away, what are y’all’s speedrunning goals for 2024?

Mine is to learn the Super Mario Odyssey Any% Route and do a couple runs of it by the end of the year.

I hope to improve with making speedrunning content! Also I hope I can find one game I can do a full Blindfolded run of instead of just an IL!

Similar to Pat, I kinda wanna improve with making speedrunning content myself, as I have been out of it for 8 months. Thankfully, my most recent run is a 11:59 in Very Easy Classic Mode with Dragon King in the new Smash Remix update (waiting for the mods to update the leaderboards so I can submit it). Outside of that though, I do have other goals in mind.

  1. Head back into the world of Super Smash Flash speedruns.
  2. Breathe some more life into the Mario Sports Mix speedrunning community.
  3. FINALLY speedrun Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy like I wanted to do 3 YEARS AGO.

Those are really the only three I had in mind at the moment.

Black-Shadow I wish you luck! Making speedrunning content can be difficult especially when it comes to thinking of ideas! Even more so if you're using to think of ideas that hasn't been done yet!

  1. Learn Quadrilateral Cowboy
  2. Secure all first 7 TABS categories by getting the Spooky campaign WR, and the Original 7 Categories WR
  3. Finish the keyg route sheet, which is dumb but it would be amazing if I could go through the effort
  4. Paint the Town Red - Beneath NG WR
  5. The ultimate goal, which I almost certainly won't manage, is the Jazzpunk Any% record, which the same person has held for 5 years with one or two slip-ups, and it's incredibly optimised.

  1. Get half of the IL world records in halo 4, top 3 on the remaining categories and full game.

  2. Other than this, my goal is to run every game in my steam and epic games library this year (minus a few that arent able to be speedran). This is about 200 games, and want to run the majority of categories for each game.

  3. For moderation, planning on working more on the Atari Series (2600, 5200, 7800, Jag, etc) to make autosplitters, better universal game rules with new knowledge, and requesting more games. Its ultimately the Atari community's goal to get the whole library of atari first and third party games tracked on the site (excluding homebrews and games that cant be speedran).

I'd like to get much better times in Kingdom Hearts games, but I think they are all very long and I'm kinda tired of trying.

Bumping to ask everyone how they did, particularly interested to hear from @SpeedRunFan2022 @ Black-Shadow @VyPr @Merl_ and @Walgrey down to their lists, but anyone else who wants to respond it'd be fun to hear about. I'll go through mine:

  1. Learn Quadrilateral Cowboy I had a go, the game was very strange on my machine and without an active community I got fed up with it. I should've been more proactive and didn't manage to learn much more than the route for the introductory scene (again, as I pretty much already knew). Might come back to it again this year.

  2. Secure all first 7 TABS categories by getting the Spooky campaign WR, and the Original 7 Categories WR I actually did this (indiviudally)! Mostly achieved in the Summer, and took it much further by securing the WR in every main category's 'any%' version, plus I still hold them with the exception of the RTA timing version of the Introduction campaign, if you choose to value that time more highly (I'm holding the record if we go by LRT, as of writing this post). I didn't get the full-game version, comprising the 'Original 7 Categories' because learning so many strategies which were so similar was quite tedious in itself, but I will add it to my to-do pile for this year as well.

  3. Finish the keyg route sheet, which is dumb but it would be amazing if I could go through the effort Didn't go back to this at all. I realised whilst the game is a fun concept I wasn't enjoying speedrunning and routing it in any prior gameplay I'd done, so just left it.

  4. Paint the Town Red - Beneath NG WR I did secure it in January this year, and held it for less than 2 weeks, then spent a lot of the year improving, before the record holder @Trident secured it more firmly each time I was close haha - very respect-worthy performance from him. I've improved a lot, and did achieve the goal in 2024 but it's a hollow victory, and I will finish the year with a silver medal.

  5. The ultimate goal, which I almost certainly won't manage, is the Jazzpunk Any% record, which the same person has held for 5 years with one or two slip-ups, and it's incredibly optimised. I really tried, managed to secure second place and I could go a lot further, but I ran into demoralising problems with hardware differences and tuning the game in such a way that I'd have a good chance at the WR would've meant relearning a few things, and I pretty much left it at a good 2nd place back in September. I will continue to try this category/goal indefinitely I imagine ;)

All in all, I can comfortably give myself a 1.75/5 achieved. It's not great, but there's always next year :')

I think I did pretty well considering how un-confident I was this year. I definitely gave myself a lot of really hard goals this year, that I wasn't even close to when I started.

  1. Celeste Classic Any% 1:39 I got a 1:43.20, which is 11th place. I got a bit burned out from any% after I spent a while grinding for a 1:41 when my PB was only 1:44, and I didn't play the game as much as I intended to this year. I definitely think 1:39 is doable next year.
  2. Celeste Classic Pink Role So if you don't know, there are discord roles for Celeste Classic runners who get certain times in different categories. The hardest role to get is the pink role, which only about 10 people have. It requires getting top times in the three most popular categories. The hardest one to get is 1:44 in any%, which I got. I got very close to sub 2 in gemskip (I got 2:06 twice, and have been on sub 2 pace in 2800), and even closer to sub 2:10 in 100% (2:10 exactly D:). Again, I got burned out and didn't play the game very much. Honestly I could probably still do this one by the end of the year, the remaining pink times aren't that hard.
  3. Mobility Any% Contact NMG 6:1X I got way closer to this one than I expected. I hadn't seriously grinded Mobility in a very long time at the start of 2024, so I expected it to be very difficult to beat my very optimized PB of 6:35. But finding the motivation to run the game again turned out to be the hardest part, and after only 20-30 hours I managed to PB again and get a 6:34. I've been grinding the game ever since, and I just lowered the record to 6:22.43 a few days ago as of writing this. I don't think I can get 1x this year unfortunately, but I did get the first ever 2x and I got way closer to 1x than I thought I would. I'm super happy with my progress.
  4. Frog King Any% 1:20.XX I got a run with TAS cycle, and the hard climb strat with a frame perfect jump in a run. It finished at 1:21.360. I stopped enjoying running the game at some point though; 1:20 is really tight and the climb strat requires really fast inputs that kind of hurt to do. The 5 block jump is also basically RNG, it's frame perfect and you need good subpixels for it to be possible. I could tolerate it when it was basically the only hard part of the run, but for 1:20 its super annoying.

Do you guys ever look back at something really hard you did a long time ago and just go "how the hell did I manage to pull that off"? Well that's pretty much what I did to everything else on my goals list. .S is a really hard game, it's super easy to softlock, there are a lot of inconsistent wall clip strats, and the hardest part of the game is at the end of the run, where you have to do precise movements, hard glitched jumps, and multiple wall clips. Almost any mistake kills your run. The absolute worst part for me was the level 14 gate clip, every few months I would come back to the game and try to find a way to get through consistently before giving up. Platformer Game 2 is a really optimized meme game, and I never really felt like playing it at any point in the last year. It doesn't help that the game had a glitch patched out that makes it essentially impossible to get record on the official version of the game. The moderator of the leaderboard is a purist and won't allow modified versions to be valid on the leaderboards, like autosplitters or versions with the old glitch patched in. So there's not much I can do about that. I also haven't been running IRL at all. I stopped running, and now I'm out of shape, so I don't ever feel like running because I know it will suck because I'm out of shape. I need to just force myself to run and keep running I guess. It'll suck for a few weeks but eventually I'll be able to enjoy it again.

That being said, I did a lot of really cool stuff that wasn't on my original goals list, that I'm super proud of. I finished the Mobility Any% TAS, I won the exotic TAS of 2023 award on tasvideos, I got untied world records in both Demon Castle categories, I did humskip abt deathless, I got a 1:05 in Cyclo 8 (which has quickly become one of my favorite speedgames ever), I TAS-tied 60 Seconds Burger Run, I got Sub 20 in Amidst the Sky, and beat all of Oreo's time trials. This is a long post but I'm done now lol.
