Hi all. I’m new to speed running so I apologise if this sounds a bit dumb. My query is in regards to glitches that assist a speed run being patched. I will lay it out as an example:

Player X speed runs a PS5 game. In their run, a glitch is used that greatly assists in gaining the fastest time. Years pass, and the glitch is patched. This means all runners after the fact can not use the glitch, and therefore will never achieve a better time than Player X.

Does this mean that the speed run in question is dead? Or are there special categories for no glitch runs?

Generally a new category will be made for the new patch. If the old version becomes unavailable, it could be designated as a “legacy category” that doesn’t receive new submissions.

There are often glitchless categories.
