Brand new to speedrunning
Saxony, Germany

Eyo. I've been interested in speedrunning for a while now, but have always been scared off by it due to my usual lack of dedication to anything, plus the huge expectations for it, but recently I've decided to try and give it a shot. I'm not very skilled in a lot of the games that I usually play, and I don't even know what game I should play to try out speedrunning for the first time. I've never even played a Nintendo game to begin with, haha.

I've mostly been inspired to try speedrunning, and have been following it mostly through Summoning Salt, and Karl Jobst. If anyone has some advice, or notes, or literally anything to help me with starting off, please do tell me here, or send me a friend request over on Discord, of which my name should be in my profile!

A few of the games that I play or have played include Dark Souls 3, Hollow Knight, Team Fortress 2, Sea of Thieves, Terraria, Rayman Legends, Binding of Isaac, Far Cry 4, Minecraft, Undertale, and a few others that I cannot think of right now.

Welcome to the site!

First thing to keep in mind is to not stress out about it all. Speedrunning's just a fun hobby, and it goes best when you look at your runs as positively as possible. Focus on your times, not others', and appreciate every PB. And even if it isn't a PB, look at what things went well in it. Starting out in a game, you won't be making amazing times, but as long as you've got the right mindset, you won't lose motivation.

Next thing is to find a game you like and won't mind playing through often. From the list you have there, a lot of 'em are already pretty established speedgames so they should have plenty of resources to learn from. Though my suggestion would be to start with some of your own routing, before really looking too deep into what's being done already. Personally, I'd also recommend against starting with runs that are RNG heavy, but if you don't mind it, that's all good.

Given time, you'll find your personal favorite run length, though it is easier to start with something shorter. If the game you want to run is a bit longer, but you're unsure about being able to do that long of a run, then set a shorter goal in the game to speedrun while you build up skill. For DS3, it might be something like just speedrunning to Abyss Watchers.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. I'll be around if you want any more advice or suggestions on good games to start with.
