Hey :)

So I'm new here and willing to eventually start submitting some speedruns. Thing is, I've no idea how to record myself and stuff... I just play games, emulators etc.

I've slowly been attracted to speedrunning naturally because I often play the same games I love again and again since my first gameboy over 30 years ago. But since I was too lazy to check how to record and stuff and didn't really care about recognition, I've just assembled times to some games, near my screens of non-speedrun big results on various games, just for my own little memories ^^

Few exemple : I finished Kirby's Dream Land in 11min16s (that's exactly the 7th time here apparently !) ; FFVII HDINS (half day in no save) in 10h25min42s with a nice screen of Ultima Weapon nearly destroying my attempt ! A bunch of first places EU when racing for new seasons on Diablo 2/3 (even if it was for just a few minutes/hours ^^), a 9th World for achievements in D3.. some random times on Spyro, Zelda alttp or Castlevania SOTN where I just didn't follow any guide and am just so far behind !

I'm usually not too fond of checking how others do, nor replay some segment/full game again and again just to perform better... because then it loses a bit in fun to me. At least since it was only for myself. But if I'm trying to record and submit, it might be a motivation and I'll probably try some less known games and stuff.

Anyway, just how do I record myself, use those timers things ? Thanks in advance !

You can use any device to record yourself, so long as you can tell what's going on. Those timer things are usually part of LiveSplit. You can use any timer you want though. You can also just not time your run because mods will retime your runs, but it's best to have at least a relative time. If you plan on using your computer to record, you can use OBS to record. It has a better quality. Using a capture card also works for consoles, but that might be a little expensive so if you're not willing to buy one then you can just record with your phone or a camera.

Side note: Make sure to check the game's rules and make sure emulators are allowed. Most games have emulators banned.

Thanks I've set OBS and LiveSplit and submitted my first run :)

Now I'm gonna check how it works to request new games, I have an idea or two ! edit : oh well, gotta be here for >7days to request games. Can I record myself speedruning a game that isn't yet added, then submit the run later on eventually ?

Yep, you can do that. Just make sure you read the requirements to request a game, otherwise it may get rejected.

Yeah, I make sure to read every rules to not waste my time and the moderator's ;) I saw the whole Epic Battle Fantasy series is there... except for the one I'm planning to run : Bullet Heaven 3. Guess I'll start anyway and see how it goes, then request later if possible.
