So, I have been investigating this new shop glitch on an emulator, and I have accomplished a few fun things. However, when I try with the actual cartridge on my console, the game glitches just like Iceplug shown. I don't think it means that the glitch is not achievable on console, because I managed to get gold by going back just a few lines in memory to make sure the game doesn't crash. However, the 1 wind 1 earth card clearly doesn't work. Is it possible that the data contained in the 3 save files affect the glitch in any way? My question is for Autumn of course.
Meanwhile, I will try to find a setup that works on console!
Has anyone been able to do the shop glitch on the original cartridge?
From my testing with the cartridge, doing the glitches on cart can still get you money (I think you can get around 50-60K gold), but it does not appear that you can get the Crystal Sword. Thus, you will categorically be at a disadvantage as you can only get competent weapons but none that are overpowered .
Alright, I thought Decapent was on console. I don't have a setup myself, the closest I've got is 3ds and SNES Mini for testing. I can ask my friends on Discord if anyone has it.
The reason I don't think it's the save files, is because the shop is reading RAM for the "item" and ROM for the "item description". At no point should it be touching SRAM. Most likely it's an issue with accessing uninitialized data being different between console and emulators. Like the unused enemy EXP being hexadecimal $5555 telling the game to access the 21845th item description.
I run on Super Analog NT and an SD2SNES cart not an OG SNES + Arcana cart.
If the original gear is at a disadvantage shop glitch wise, maybe it would be worth splitting the run into different categories ? i.e Any% vs Any% NMG ?
So just to recap: we have two different versions of the Arcana Shop Glitch.
o The Greater Shop Glitch (GSG), which lets you obtain the Crystal Sword in Chapter 1 and (somewhat) trivialize the first two/three chapters and obtain perhaps a million gold, but cannot be done on original hardware.
o The Lesser Shop Glitch (LSG), which lets you obtain about 60,000 gold, but can be done on (I assume) any version of Arcana.
In order to maintain the health of the both of those glitches, I agree with Decapent in that we should probably put GSG in a different category.
I was just gonna name them based on those categories: LSG, GSG, and Glitchless but I agreed more with Decapent. Any% would be equivalent to GSG, except that Any% is not possible on original hardware and I think that having Any% being emulator only might be a bad precedent. Any% NMG would be both LSG and Glitchless, with the option to split the categories if there is interest to do so.
If there are no other issues, then next month I will split the categories to Any% and Any% NMG.
Should we do Any% GSG instead of Any%? What if we just get rid of the Any%s and have GSG and NMG? Also, if the categories are split, then there would be only Decapent's 1:52 in Any% GSG and all of the other runs plus Decapent's 2:21 (they're all glitchless) would be in Any% NMG. Otherwise, if there are no other concerns, then I'll make these changes next month. Please let me know what you think.
Apart from wanting to try an original Arcana Cart on my Super Analog NT (just to try the permutation haha), I have no objection. I am just having a nerd moment not wanting to call my console an emulator haha!
I agree with the proposed categories nomenclature 👍
I also agree, although it might end up changing if we manage to find a setup that makes the glitch work on console. I have tried many combinations of cards on emulator, and I can only manage the GSG with 1 earth card setups, so it is also fragile. Maybe a consistent setup also exist on console... The future might tell us!
I don't suppose you can narrow down which line is causing the freeze? Can you consistently sell the line before that one every time?
Hmm, without resorting to hexadecimal... how many up presses is it after being unable to sell the 2nd item slot? I want to check if a specific value is causing it.
With the 1 wind 1 earth setup, it takes me 9 inputs before glitching. To be clear, after I click to trade the Silver Flask for the 2nd slot medicine, I have to press up 9 times (so, 1st input of the 2nd empty page if I remember correctly). This links to $13AB, which is the 2nd card inventory slot I think. It is also important to note that different card setups glitch on different pages (some on the first page, some on the 3rd or 4th I think). The visual effect of the glitch is also different. It is a bit confusing!
For the selling part, I guess I would need to test it more, but I have managed to sell lines on the 1st empty page for 20k a few times. I never completed a run with that glitch on console yet, but I suspect we would need to be very careful with it, like avoiding to open the card inventory because it could make the game freeze.
Hmm, there's 8 card slots so, 9 up presses should be the first card slot (the Wind Card x1). If it's glitching on that one then maybe try some different quantities, these are all glitched prices and glitched descriptions. After that point is the "spirits not unlocked", which I think would be binary 1110 (14) in chapter 1.
Yeah, selling a card can be really hard to get rid of. I can sometimes discard it to fix that, but scrolling down to it can take upwards of a minute so I doubt it would save time.
If you wanna test prices quickly on different chapters, I recommend using the stage select codes.
It was brought to my attention that there are more than one version of a SNES ? Perhaps that could be an explanation towards the GSG and LSG ?
Oh yeah, I've heard about that. It's not what I would expect to be the cause, but I'm really curious if there are any differences there.
The leaderboard categories have been updated. Hopefully more runs will populate the new Any%. All runs in Any% NMG are currently Glitchless; future category splits for LSG vs Glitchless can be relitigated, I guess, once we have runs of both types. I re-verified Decapent's Any% NMG 2:21 because it was showing up Obsolete while in 1st place.
In regards to the multiple versions of SNES, I think the first thing we would have to see is if anyone has an original game cartridge with any type of SNES that can perform GSG.
