For new runners, NMG (No Major Glitches) refers to a category commonly seen in speedrunning. If you’re familiar with the term "glitchless," NMG operates similarly but allows specific minor glitches.
To help runners coming from other games, or completely new to speedrunning, I wanted to outline what constitutes minor glitches in Abe's Exoddus, as this is not stated anywhere immediately obvious. For the avoidance of doubt, these minor glitches are permitted in NMG runs.
For clarity, according to the rules, the major glitches are;
- Auto-turn delay glitch that allows Abe to go through floors/walls and perform backward jumps.
- Skyfalling (jumping up and falling distances that would kill you but preventing it due to this glitch
- Duplicating Mudokons
- Quikloading (F6 on steam and GoG).
- Save glitches (Relocation and Advanced Relocation Glitches)
- Ghost Wheels (killing a mudokon as they are turning wheels so that the wheel keeps turning)
For console runners - it's worth stating some of these glitches (quikloading, save glitches) are only relevant to the Steam/GoG version.
So what exactly are the 'minor glitches' that are allowed in NMG runs?
These minor glitches have been agreed collectively and many are characterised by their one time use. Should something new be found, it will be voted on accordingly.
Invisible Well [Bonewerkz - Annex 8]
There is an invisible well here which if you hop of both the spots picture, Abe will land in. This is because at the end of Annex 8 once Abe goes inside this wheel (pictured) Abe is launched through a series of wells. This wasn't intended by the developers, but it has been deemed a minor glitch and can be used in any NMG category. The well is accessed from two areas in the speedrun, both shown below.
Pulling Levers Through Walls [Hub II - Zulag 8]
With the flying slig you can press the lever through the wall.
Scrab Lift [Mudanchee - Trial 1 secret]
In the secret here, using the strategy shown, you can force the Scrab to an early death by manipulating the position Abe is on on the lift
Deloading Grinders off-screen [Multiple Locations]
If a Mudokon continues following Abe, on a screen Abe isn't on, the Mudokon will not be killed by the grinder. When Abe moves on to the next screen, the grinders are deloaded - but this is fine in all categories.
Mine door collision [Multiple Locations]
If a mine is on the same tile as a door, Abe can still slide as normal to go in the door and enters as usual. Abe's hitbox will still collide with the mine, but as the game gives priority to Abe entering the door, no death is registered.
Slog Bait [Multiple Locations]
If Abe has a bone and the throw button is pressed (without throwing it) on a screen with slogs, the slogs will jump in the air allowing Abe to go past the slogs unharmed. This applies to both adult and baby slogs.
Slapping Slig through walls [Barracks - Block 3 & Zulag 12]
In Barracks Block 3 and Hub 3 (bottom left Zulag), when a Slig is on the tile next to the wall, facing the opposite direction of the wall - the Slig can be slapped and when the Slig gets up, it is behind the wall.
